1) Message boards : Number crunching : Optim. app. on overclocked PC ? (Message 343501)
Posted 20 Jun 2006 by Profile daav
Post:

Hello!

In the past of Crunch3rs homepage, I had read that he suggested to take his optimized apps only on "normal" PCs not on an overclocked PC.

Now I heard that somebody take the optmized apps on overclocked systems.

Whats correct?
What are you doing?

And what will be in the future with the new optimized apps?

Hi Dirk,

I really cannot speak for others..., but I've been OC'ing my Boxes for the last
15 years, w/great success, (some failures, but not many)!

On this particular Box, (Desktop), I've had it OC'ed since I built it on April,
2004, (26 Months), and has been 'Stable' for the same amount of time. The only thing I had to replace is my PSU, (approx 1 year ago), w/regular 'Dust-Bunnie-Maintenance' every 3 Months!

You 'CAN' do both, (i.e. OC and Optmized App), w/o turning in any 'Errors'. The operative word here 'IS' "STABILITY" on your Box!

I've run the:

a) Classic
b) SETI/BOINC
c) Current 'ENHANCED-SETI-BOINC', all for 24/7/365, (except for Maintenance and when it gets too Hot in my Apt, and replacing my PSU.

Some Specs:

M/B: ASUS A7N8X-X / NVIDIA nForce2 400 NB Chipset.
CPU: AMD Athlon M-XP2500+ 1833MHZ @ 2305MHz, (472MHz Over), on Air.
MEM: 1024MB's PC3200 400MHz, (200MHz x 2), DDR Dual Channel.
VIDEO: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200, (128 MB), DDR.

I've also been using Crunch3r's v5.50 BOINC / v5.12 SETI App, and it has been doing great. Avgeraging approx 5200 to 5500 Seconds, (per WU).

Just check you O/C'ed Box to make sure that it's not doing any 'Weird Behavior', (i.e. Pointer & Screen Freezes, BSOD, Random Re-boots, No-Posts, CPU Overheating etc), and you'll probably be 'Safe!' If any of the above occur, back-off of your O/C 'a few MHz at a time, and run it for awhile). Just remember that OverClocking has 'Never' been an 'exact' Science..., and going 'Slowly' w/your O/C, has always been the Ticket! 8-)

I'm having the same problems as most everyone else, regarding 'not being able to U/L WU's and Validations, also'.

But more than this problem, I see a 'problem of a different type!' A problem of a "Negative Rating Goon Squad", who don't even read the Posts of a certain Cruncher, but look for 'His Posts', (by name), and just give it a 'Negative Rating!'

What's up with that? I read both of his Posts..., and there was Nothing in either one to even suggest a 'Negative' Rating! It seems like the approx 12 People who deem themselves as Critic's, should go over their 'Own Inventory!'

Have we resorted to 'Grade School Tactics', where Popularity, great looking Cloths, many G/F's, seems to get all the 'Pluses', you don't even need to be Smart! Or..., is it a Question of 'How many Boxes he has', and the Credits, (approx 630K, and RAC, approx 9200), that is luring you to that "-" Mark Rating!? (That sounds like Jealousy at this Point)!

I've only been at SETI '7 Years', (this May), so maybe I'm not getting it! =)
I've also just been at BOINC for 14+ Months, and have given just '1' '-' Mark. All the rest have been 'Pluses!' His post's are (1), on "This" topic, and (1) over at:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=29293#267878

I have known him for over 4+ years, and he's a Stand-up guy, who would Help anyone having Problems, and has helped Much on the Classic 'Boards, also!

So, I'll just keep donating my Little '1K of Credits per day', w/my '2' Boxes, and hope, perhaps, something is Found with them!

This thread will not allow 'stretching': no imbedded graphics/pics and while quoting a post with a very long URL in it, fix it if you know BBCode, otherwise delete it or place spaces in it to break it up so it will wrap properly. Another option is to use this site to create a new link. If you must include a graphic/pic in your post, create a link to it, no thumbnails.

Hi Crunchers, First, I want to thank 'Clay & Byron' for the 'Kudos!'

Secondly, 'CONGRATZ' to David1339 for his recent '200K'..., and to Byron, for his recently acquired '1M!'.

Thirdly, I have to add my apology, (along w/Clay), for adding my 'Embedded, (Cropped, not a TN), 10.88KB jpg, Account Pix', to my Post. Won't happen again!
I also, didn't notice the Rule at the Bottom of Thread. BTW..., I have always used 'SnipURL', as opposed to 'TinyURL'. Same difference..., lol! =)

Lastly, "WTG Siran"..., on your '100K', (almost hit it at the same time)!

I see that you started 'SETI', a couple days after I did! Where the He*l does the Time go!?

I've ranked #1 in RAC on the team for a few weeks now. That RAC list includes other Classic hold-outs near the top: Santiago E. Diaz, David1339, Jack Gulley, and flwrchld53 all appear along with me on the first page (top 20 RAC on a team with 2,240 members). We've been chastised for not bringing our resources over to the BOINC side sooner, but our goals were clear, we stuck with them, and now we're making our marks here. And yes, it is more fun coming up from behind![/color]

Hey Clay, "WAY 2 GO!" That's one He*l of a lot of 'Crunching', in 2 months! CONGRATZ!

I'm just here, (also), to Report a 'Milestone of my own!' It's my first '100K!' I did it with just one Box..., and put a second on, just '2' Months ago, (today). Started 'BOINC'in' last Jan, 2005.

I don't think 'Neil Munday's Siggie's Dump', has caught up w/my actual total..., (as of this Post), so I Cropped a Section of my Acct, to show.

Thanx for the Support, and 'Crunch3r' for his Opt Apps, too! =)

I think Boinc 5.2.13 has a memory leak on XP (Home edition)

Maybe it will help.

Hi All, Good Find, Bob! I guess that it looks quite possible, (seeing the Posts that 'StokeyBob' found)..., but I, (personally), have Win XP/Pro SP2, on my Boxes, along with, (mentioned Zone Alarm Firewall).

Although, I have 'ZA/Pro', and am also using BOINC v5.2.13, (2 Boxes, w/Optimized Apps), and can say..., that I've 'Never' experienced any Memory Leak, on either Box!

As I recall, several months ago BOINC/Seti had about 125,000 Active users, while Seti Classic still had about 330,000 Active users. Now there are about 210,000 Active BOINC/Seti users. Even if you allow that all of the BOINC/Seti users were also still active Seti Classic users at the same time, that still leaves 120,000 active Seti crunchers (or many more and their systems) MIA.

I would change the site I'd check the numbers at, if I were you. ;)
BOINCStats.com claims 347,497 users.
BS Stats claims 346,592 users.

Both of them are then well over your claims with MIA added.

Hi Ageless, I 'will not' be Addressing MIA's..., but instead, will be Speaking about the Stats that you Quoted from:

BOINCStats.com claims 347,497 users.
BS Stats claims 346,592 users.

..., these were for, 'TOTAL USERS' and not 'ACTIVE USERS!' There is 'Quite a Difference,' of many 1000's!

"Total Users" = Are 'all users' who have 'Ever' signed up for like, (i.e. SETI/BOINC Project), and perhaps turned in '1' Result, (maybe 20 to 35 Credits), or More!

"Active Users" = Are the 'Users' who have Turned in at least '1' Result, Within the last Week, (or '7' Days)!

Here are the Stats for Dec 27th, at:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
http://www.boincstats.com/stats/project_graph.php?pr=sah
Total Credit: 3,924,826,879
Average floating point operations per second 191,079.2 GigaFLOPs / 191.079 TeraFLOPS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I guess what we're talking about is "166,825" 'Total Users', who have 'NOT' turned in even '1' Result within the last '7' Days!

Of course there are a few reasons for going 'Beyond' this 7 day time, such as:
a.) Crunching another Project for 'TOO' long. (And not switching Back and Forth).
b.) Gone away for an extended Vacation, and shut down their Boxes.
c.) 'Quit' the Project for 'Personal reasons!'

So, just as the approx "Total 5.4 Million" That signed up for SETI Classic, about '5 Million +' dropped out by the wayside, quit, opened numerous accts, (5 to 15), and only crunched a Few WU's, and then quit, and many other reasons!

In reality, the "Total SETI/BOINC Users", (350K), is quite a Useless, (Vascillating from Active Users), figure..., where-as, the "Active SETI/BOINC Users", (180K), is a 'More Realistic Figure", to go by! And if you watch it daily..., it doesn't fluctuate very much, staying Proportionality the same, as the 'Total Increases!' =)

8) Message boards : Number crunching : Part 2 - OPTIMISED CLIENT -> WINDOWS x86 32bit or 64bit (Message 221435)

Post:

In this case, you've already installed the client, and it appears to be exactly the _correct_ client for your system - if you were using Crunch3r's optimized application as well. Please, as soon as you can, install that. You'll be doing twice as much work in the same time, your claimed credits will be "midrange", and your _granted_ credits should not fall by very much, if at all, on each result. So you'll be getting almost twice the credits per day.

Hey Bill, Well, I gave it the 'Ol College Try', and it Failed. I wont go into details, as I've got a bunch of Company Over here. Suffice it to say..., I followed the Instructions to a 'Tee!'

When I started it back up w/the Binary, PDB and XML Info, (there are just these 3 Files), it commenced to take all '14' of my 'setiathome v4.18 Apps', and the Binary and PDB, (Renamed, and in the Correct Folder), as it said to do, and then it even took the Binary & the PDB..., lol!

Well, there it was with my 'HSF' running in 5th gear, (High Noise), and w/nothing to do, (it wouldn't D/L any more Files), so I Suspended, Exited it and Deleted it. Replaced it w/ my Backup..., Now running great!

If there is one thing I can do, it's follow good instructions, and 'Crunch3r's were good! Under his 'WARNINGS', on the SETI Client x86 Page, (Window$), it did say:

Do Not Use this App on Heavely O/C'ed CPU's..., and my little AMD M-XP2500+, Normally runs at 1833MHz! I've had it O/C'ed for 'over 16 Months' running 24/7 @ 2305MHz, (472MHz Over)..., so I would think that this might qualify as 'Heavely O/C'ed'!? I had it running at 2600MHz for 7 Days, (right after I Burned it in), and it performed perfectly! But like anything else, I didn't want to push my Luck & $91 Bucks, so I lowered it to 2305MHz, and there it's been running, ever since!

So I'm just putting it off to Crunch3r's Warning, (which I exceeded!). I shall investigate this at another time, as my Company is Now in my room here, asking: "Well, WTF are you doing in here? ..., and it's to late to explain to them!"

But Thanx Bill for taking the Time to Investigate that 4 me! I appreciate it! I "WILL" find a Solution to this! =)

'Your Opt. Version, BOINC v5.2.13 SSE)'... <snip>

Went from 2:52 per WU, to 2:18 per WU!

Just one point to help avoid confusion... while this optimized BOINC client obviously raises the benchmarks and claimed credits, and may (by taking less CPU time from the science applications when it does rescheduling, etc.) improve the "results per day" figure by a _tiny_ bit, it _cannot_ have any effect on the CPU time required to actually process a result. The science application simply doesn't "sit and wait", with the clock running, for anything the BOINC Core Client might be doing.

Whatever improved your average times is more likely to be a string of slightly-shorter WUs from SETI, or a couple of extremely short ones, and not the change in Client. Looking at your results, you are now claiming around 50 credits/result, which is quite high. So I looked deeper, and it appears that you are NOT running an optimized Science Application.

If you were to install the correct optimized SETI application for your processor, your times could be cut in half - to just over _one_ hour per result. And your claimed credits would then also be much more realistic.

Hi Bill, I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say!? I have '2' Boxes Running BOINC v5.2.13. One AMD XP2800+, @ 2100MHz, (for the last 11.5 Months)..., (It has 'NO' SETI or BOINC Optimization), and then there's the One I just started Below. The XP2800+ cranks out some 7 WU's and Change, (per day), (#437622).

The M-XP2500+, @ 2305MHz, (for just the last 9 days)..., (It just has the "BOINC v5.2.13 SSE" Optimization, 'Not' any "Optimized SETI App, (as it seems that you were looking for). In fact I "Never Stated" that the Box had any "SETI Optimization!" This M-XP2500+ Cranks out some 9 WU's and Change, (per day), (#1964703). This has been fairly consistant, the past Week or so!

So how, (Pray tell), can you tell me it's not Crunching More WU's per day..., as you put it:

...while this optimized BOINC client obviously raises the benchmarks and claimed credits, and may (by taking less CPU time from the science applications when it does rescheduling, etc.) improve the "results per day" figure by a _tiny_ bit, it _cannot_ have any effect on the CPU time required to actually process a result.

I can tell you that it's not all "RA/Noise" either, that's giving the increase of the '2'WU's per day! Are you saying that "That's" all on Paper?

Now, I don't doubt for a Min that running an 'Optimized SETI App' would substantially improve the WU Speed & Lower the Claimed Credit 'per day!' But I can't be bothered with that right now, (maybe in a couple of weeks, but not now)!

I have a Couple of other Irons in the Fire, (right now), and will get to it when 'These' are taken care of!

BTW..., If you would have gone back a Couple of '20' Results, you would have seen the same Box, (703), was Claiming 36 and 38 Credits. (Still High, I know).

Thanx 4 the Info on that anyway! =)

PS. You know whats Funny..., I've 'Always' been the "High Claimed Credits" on my 'Stock', (+1MHz, lol), other Box, (the AMD XP2800+, @ 2100MHz), for almost the whole 11.5 Months, I've been at BOINC! How do you figure that one? (Besides , everyone else has an Optimized SETI App)?

(except Pathscales EKOPath compiler for 64 bit linux which is even faster than intels icc at 64 bit code)

Thanx Crunch3r, for your 'BOINC Client for Windows', (i.e. Boinc 5.2.13 Windows SSE). It made my little M-XP2500+, @2305MHz, '1' CPU, (a Mobile CPU, I installed in my Desktop), and has been running the SETI Classic for 16 Months, (24/7), and now the SETI/BOINC since Dec 16th..., from:

Stock BOINC v5.2.13..., (Win XP/Pro/SP2)...
2150 double precision MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
3506 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

..., to:

'Your Opt. Version, BOINC v5.2.13 SSE)'...
2505 double precision MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
6895 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

Went from 2:52 per WU, to 2:18 per WU! That's quite an improvment for my little 'M-XP2500+, @2305MHz!' 1024MB's of PC3200 400MHz DDR SDRAM. An 'ASUS, A7N8X-X M/B, w/NVIDIA, nForce2 400 NB' and nForce2 MCP SB Chipsets. And, Stable for over 16 Months, 24/7. The Max O/C on this Chip is 2600MHz. The 'FSB' is not only adjustable, but the Multiplier is, too. Comes from the Factory like this! Not bad for a $91 CPU! I also have an 'M, (Mobile), XP2600+, that is just as O/C'able as this one. It too, is in a Desktop Box.

B4 anyone says anything about O/C'ing..., I have been O/C'ing for 15+ yrs, and have yet to 'Fry a Chip!' And 'Systems Building, Upgrade and Repairing,' for just as Long. =)

I also am an 'A+ Certified Computer Tech', (CompTIA), for the last 10 years. I started w/the 'Old timer, O/C'ers'..., and learned the 'Skill' of O/C'ing the 'Sensible Way', (1MHz at a time, and for Multipliers..., '.5 at a Time!' Slow, on the DDR Timing, too!

I go on some of these O/C Forums today, and they're 'Bragging' about their Boxes running for 4-5 Days @ 'X.XGHz', B4 it gave a BSOD, or it wouldn't Boot, Pointers & Screen Freezes, and just 'All-Around Flakey Behavior!', ...lol!

To me..., An O/C'ed Box isn't worth 2 Cents, if it isn't 'Stable', (w/o even 'one' of the above mentioned in-stabilities), for at least..., '1 Year!'

You have to remember, when I started O/C'ing, Boxes were only running at a 'Blazing 25 to 33MHz'..., lol! Oh, yeah. I have never had to use 'Liquid Cooling', (although, I've had a lot of Customers, that brought me their Liquid-Cooled Boxes, where either the Condensate, or a Leak..., ruined their Mainboard! It's a Custom 'AIR-Cooling System' that I build & Use!

Seems that I've rambled-on, long enough! =) That's what happens when you Retire, (+65), and have a bit of, 'Too Much' time on your hands. Business has slowed, now that 'X-mas' is here! I'll get a 'splurge next month!'

Anyway..., Thanx again, Crunch3r, for your 'BOINC SSE Opt APP!' And also to your Mates: 'Tetsuji Maverick Rai, Alex Kan, Hans Dorn, Harold Naparst and Ned Slider.'

Yes CR, I tend to agree! You would think that after my 6.4+ years with 'Classic', and 9 months w/BOINC..., one would get used to this sort of thing!?

Do invest in a good PSU. "El-cheapo" PSUs have been known to cause system instability and in worse cases, blow up, taking out the rest of your components with it.

'Good Info!'

Hi All, When shopping for a 'Quality' PSU, look for something in the range of 400/450/500 Watt! More important then that, are the 'Specs' listed on the Box, or the side of the PSU!

Look for the 'Output' of your "+12 V"..., and just make sure it Lists a 'Min' of "15 Amps!" Any thing less than that, (i.e. 10-13 A.), "Shelve it, again!"

Plus, make sure that it has a '4' Connector P4, "+12 V" for the Connection on your M/B, (Intel Only)!=) Some PSU's I've seen, have 'said' that they're 'P4 Ready'..., but 'Do Not' have this Connector. It's always a good idea to Physically Remove the PSU from the Box, and do a 'Visual Check on it!'

Good Luck! =)

Hi NexusWest, No one can Guarantee a 'CPU's life, (for any particular reason), but as a 'Systems Builder' for many years..., I cannot recall ever Having or Hearing of any, (that I built), ever 'Fail', (because of Running at 100%, for many Months or Years, (providing regular 'Cleaning of all HSF's was in place)'.

Most 'Failures' I see, as customers bring in their 'Retail Dell, HP, other Boxes', are due to 'Impacted Dirt' in Heatsink Fins on CPU's, Chipset's, VideoCards, and Broken Cooling Fans of all Sizes! Thus related 'High Thermal Issues', are the Biggest Direct Problems to CPU's and other 'Inside Case' Components Life expectancy!

As stated below, a 'Sure' way of Committing 'CPU Suicide', (on Any AMD CPU), is/was to leave off the 'HSF on the CPU', and hit the Start Button. About 2-3 seconds, use to be all you needed to make a 'Crispy Critter' out of it! But as Tecnology gets better, so do the MainBoards..., for if you don't plug in the HSF to the Newer M/B's..., it won't even Crank!

So Yes, they'll run for 'Many Years' w/the proper Maintenance, (at 100%)! =)

Well, it's been many days, but limited Internet access has been restored. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has been hammered by a tremendous storm, but we will rebuild. Thanks go out to all who took time in their prayers to think of us, and thank you also to everyone who sent materials, services and aid to those affected by Katrina, we are in your debt ...

OceanArcher and CopperTop

Hi Ocean, Really glad to see that you made it thru!!! Best I could do was Donate to the Red Cross, (From up here in S.E. MI)! But I was Praying for you all!

I'm a Retired Guy like you, but if I was younger, I probably would have hopped in my Car, Drove down..., and saw how I could've helped out, with Relief There!

Good to hear from you!

What is the fastest that you have a returned a WU?

Just for fun this is probably the fastest I have returned a WU: 28 minutes, it was a noisey WU but anybody returned one quicker?

Hi Appetiser, I do believe it was, (Rounded off), 41 secs, which we got a whole 0.14 Credits for! ..., lol!

20) Message boards : Number crunching : How Hot does your PC run when crunching? (Message 157761)

Here are my temps:

AMD 2600+ (2.1Ghz) = 116F (46.7C) [12 WU/Day]
Dual Intel 450mhz's = 109F (43C) [4 WU/Day]

I really do not know what is too hot and if I need more cooling?

Hi Chad, If you're talking about the XP2600+, T'Bred, or even a Barton Core XP2600+..., the Max Die Temp, (CPU), is: 85C/185F! You're in 'Great shape!'

As far as your Dual Intel 450MHz, (P3's), go..., the Thermal Spec is even higher, (i.e. 90C/194F)! Not any problem here either!

Even running them, (your CPU's), at a 100%, 24/7 at 60C/140F, will not hurt them in any way!

Just make sure to keep your CPU's, (HSF/Heat sink Fins & Fan), your M/B, & all other Fans, inside your Box, Free from 'Dust Bunnies', (w/compressed Canned Air), approx every 3 Months or so, (depending on how dusty your environment is)! =) *approx a 10 Min task*
Hope this helps! =)
