Ty for that and to be quite honest, I never considered posting this at the Einstein forums. I've just been so used to using this site for BOINC / SETI.

Ty for those answers ;-)

I think I may have fixed the laptop enough to try and run boinc but I have a question about the titlee setting inside of the Einstein specific settings.

Just to be clear, even if I had a GPU capable of running tasks this would bypass those if a CPU version was available right ?

Sp of there was a GPU Task 1 and CPU Task 1 the CPU Task 1 is what would run with said setting ticked ?

Ty.

Edit: So I don't have to make a new post I want to ask this hear but how do I disable the roation of the seti graphics screensaver ?

The current point values are dictated by how much work is done per WU.

So one WU isnt worth 1 credit then, if so then thats a joke because there would be no way to tally how many WU's a person has truly done.

Assuming thats the case, no wonder why none of the other project people want to credit the way Dr. A wants them to. Again, this all assumes that everything being read in the following post can be believed.

I've opened up laptops before so thats not an issue even though it is a PIA depending on the laptop being worked with.

Nice thougt on the exit hole blowing through, if anything thats worth a first shot ;-)

To open and clean a laptop is very hard (unless you have special opening for reaching the fan/heatsink)
- sometimes you have to remove all the components to reach the fan.

Compressed air (by compressor, not can (I don't know what the pressure was))
blown through the exit hole inside (in opposite direction of normal airflow)
made magic in a matter of seconds (4-5 blows 1 sec each with 10 sec pause)
to my daughter's HP laptop - the temperature afterwards keeps around 20-30°C lower than was before (now 50-55°C at idle, was ~75°C even using Power Saver profile in Vista).

And you can use Power Saver profile (tested on Windows Vista, not XP) to avoid overheating and shutdown.

Thats probably what it is (layer of dust), wont know for sure til I take the casing off since a can of air would only do so much blowing through vents etc.

BOINC won't react to spikes on this, just to sustained values. A spike is normally over in a second, maybe 5. Not nearly enough time for BOINC to suspend all work. But if you do not want to use it, why not disable it with setting it to zero? Zero or 100, they're equal.

While that is true sometimes it might become useful... does anyone know what the timeframe for that setting is ?

By that I mean how long would the non BOINC usage have to be above x% before work is suspended.

Although, on a quad core 3.7 stock CPU (4.0 - 4.5 clock with luck) I could probably get away with 0 or 100.

On a similar note for arguments sake, what about GPU work... why wouldnt there be a setting for that ?

ex. Suspend work when non-BOINC GPU usage is above x.

What seems to be the appropriate setting for this ?

I figure one thing that matters is the overall size of the CPU since say 35% on a 2GHz might be something like 10% on 3.5GHz

One reason I asked is because certain things that arent CPU intensive might give a spike somethimes. Like right now I notice certain things like opening a new browsers or hitting a new page might spike to 40+% and then drop to almost nothing.

Depending on the setting for this option, BOUNC could be playing it's over version of red light green light where it's just stopping and starting alot.

Yes, your low disk free is what's causing this. Increase the "Disk: use at most Z% of total" to 100% and you should be able to get work again.

I'm not worried about work right now because I can't run BOINC before my CPU overheats and shuts down. Laptops kind of old, probably need to replace a cooling fan or something. In any case, I have work DL, outdated mind you. I was just curious about the 0.00 figure given my chosen settings but then a while ago made the edit an was like hmm, that might be why.

Any way, ty for the assistance :-)

I just wish I has some RAC or soemthing so I could post on the other boards.

Edit: For arguments sake, even if it were at 100% wouldnt the below figures interfere with it, namely the leave free 5GB one ?

Disk: use at most X GB (50GB)
Disk: leave free at least (5GB

You probably only need to use compressed air (or air in a can) and blow the dust out of the cooling.
In either event, it seems anything like BOINC or really intensive video streaming heats the CPU to the point of instant shutdown to protect the system. Even with my A/C blowing somewhat accross it (not on purposes jsut good loc) it still heats to the point of shutdown. For arguments sake, I can't even play WoW or more than 10 minutes before it goes offline. I'll need to try and sit down tomorrow and disassemble the thing to see whats goin on.

I do have a new build in the works but I would so love to run BOINC etc on this damned laptop.

Edit: Would the 0.00 be a reflection of low available disk space ?

If so that might be the reason the log shows 0.00 since I only have available 3.11GB's of disk space.

A friend of mine bought an SSD and he says load times for everything is a fraction of what it was when using a traditional hard drive.

Well, with SSD's costing what they do, the best I could do would be to get something around 50-60GB's for like a hundred bucks and even then I wouldnt be able to fit a lot on it with everything I want to to. The best I might get out of it would be as a boot / WoW drive.

Well the first problem was my high expectation. The problem starts with the fact that even the fastest SATA hard drives cannot saturate a SATA 1.5Gb connection, let alone SATA 3Gb or 6Gb.

Then RAID zero is supposed to use the combined throughput of two drives to make your system twice as fast, but it's really only helpful with disk-intensive applications. Loading Windows is quite fast, but hardly faster than a single drive Windows 7 system. I was hoping it would help with the loading screens in WoW, but they seem to take just as long, which suggests that the holdup is in receiving data from the servers - but I know it's not my internet connection because I'm running a 25Mb Comcast cable hookup.

WoW loadtimes etc would be a big thing with me to, I'm curious to see what all I'll get out of the build I got planned. Not only with WoW but everything else I'll be doing.

Yes, a quad channel memory kit would still work in dual channel memory mode on the motherboard.

I'm currently running an Intel Core i7 960 (quad core with HyperThreading @ 3.2GHz) 12GB of DDR3-1600 RAM (6x 2GB sticks) on an Asus Sabertooth motherboard and SATA 6Gb, a single ATi Radeon HD 6970, and 2x Seagate 500GB SATA 6Gb drives in a RAID 0 configuration.

Note that I'm not too impressed with my RAID 0 setup and I'm not sure if it was worth the money (good thing 500GB drives are cheap!). I don't need much space because my file server is running 5x 1.5GB drives in a RAID 5 configuration.

Sounds like you got a decent system hoin, I don't know much about RAID's because I've never set one up but why arent you satisfied with yours ?

Speaking of storage, I'll need all I can get with what I got planned hence the 2TB & 3TB drives.

Whether it is dual channel or quad channel depends on the chipset and the design of the motherboard.

If the chipset/motherboard only supports dual channel and has four RAM slots, it means you'll get the best performance using matched pairs in each bank of 2. You can use 4 matched pairs in all 4 slots and they'll work absolutely fine, but you won't get quad-channel performance by filling all 4 slots on a board that only supports dual-channel.

Ok, so a quad kit would work fine but would it still enable dual channel since the dims would be matched as they would with a 2 stick matched dual channel package ?

Thx in advance lol...

In any case, what sort of system do you run now (Mem, CPU, GPU etc.) ?

See thats pne thing I could never grasp is the extra $800 or so for as you said, a minimal preformance boost. I guess in the end it really ccmes down to what the system will be used for but even then the price increase might not be worrth it then either.

On the note of memoery...

The enthusiast second generation Core i7 isn't due out until Q4 '11 or Q1 '12, which is expected to support quad-channel memory.

This got me thinking, the memory in my current build is labeled as quad channel because I guess it's 4 matched sticks of memory. Assuming I stick with the AMD build which I will probably do for obvious reasons, I'm gonna have issue with this memory wont I ?

I bring that up because the selected board mentioned dual channel and the memory chosen says wuad channel.

As far as I understood it dual channel was just having matched dimms in the appropriate slots. So... even with this quad channel kit I should still get full dual channel functionality right because of the matched dimms ?

Edit: I jsut realized I have a dual channel kit, I did at one point have a quad kit but for arguments sake. I am still curious about a quad kit in this build, well any build really where the board specifies dual channel architecture.

I don't really want to quit either since I really enjoy WoW, but I don't have the money to fund two MMOs so I will have to make a decision eventually.

Oh, and as far as Intels being better, I'll agree with that on the condition that it depends on the chip since some AMD's can outpreform Intels but price is / was one of the main deciding facotrs for me. Hmm, $1,200 for chip A (Intel) or $120 - $150 for chip B (AMD) both of which are of the same speed.

On most applications, Intel beat AMD by a fair margin, and nearly every popular review site in the internet shows this in their benchmarks. On the very few apps that AMD is actually able to get the better of Intel, it's usually by a small margin, making it a tough buy until you add in price / performance / dollar.

Mind you, I'm not a fanboi of either company. I'm a fan of the entire x86 industry and have studied most of it's history in great detail. I wouldn't "bash" one manufacturer over the other out of spite or without fact. I still think the AMD chips are excellent performers despite not taking the lead, and I'm quite impressed with the quad-core Phenom II I built for my girlfriend's sister.

What would be the Intel equivelent of my build, I guess it just comes down to the MB and CPU.

I'm curious to see what the price would be if I did go Intel.

I use to play something like 10 hrs a day but now I'm down to about 4-5 sometimes more, just depends on what I want to do. As for other games, I've consideredd both Rift and LoTR but I don't wana venture in to them until the new systems done and I get more money since right now what I do have that I can spare is focused on the new build. As for that other game... SW: TOR, whats that ?

Very nice machine. Looks close to a dream machine I "built"/saved in my wish list on Newegg once upon a time.

I see you have some WoW game cards on that order? Do you play? If so, what server?

I haven't played for some time and trying to find a new job hence the stall in the wishlist funding but I play on Blackwing Lair (Horde). I am looking to maybe transfer thouh when I get back in.

As for the build, some people would argue go Intel because they can be better but things factoring in to that for me is their prices but on top of that... I just like AMD better for oh so many reasons.

Once it's done, provided I get whats on the list and don't "upgrade" anything it will be a pretty bad ass system. If I did upgrade anything it would maybe be the CPU assuming the bulldozers are out when I have all of the money to get the ball rolling.

Oh, and for arguments sake, I gather you play WoW as well ?

If so, ame question... What server(s) ?
