I have the same issues.
I run MS Virtual Server 2005 on Win Srv 2008 64Bit as the host.
Guests are 2 x Win XP. Ran Boinc on both virtual machines and am now in the process of retiring them both.

I have decided to run Boinc on the host only, but merging the computers is not possible because ,as you point out, the computers have existed concurrently.

Ask yourself this: Why should you be able to merge two computers that are obviously not one machine?
They can't be the same machine because they are spitting out WUs and returning results at the same time.

Just passed 10,000 Credit and 450 RAC
Also topped my team after the addition of yet another puter to the 'farm'

Top Cruncher: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (2.2GHz clocked to 2.5GHz) 1GB RAM
Latest addition: Celery 1.1GHz and 384MB RAM

Every PC counts, no matter how old and slow.
I still run an old Compaq laptop with AMD K6 @475MHz 160MB RAM (1 WU/day (82,000 seconds) down from 113,000 seconds thanks to Optimised client by Crunch3r)

I'm slowing down the RAC as some PCs are being 'harvested' from the 'farm'. :( Bummer.
