1) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Commitment Timer (Message 148090)

I would very much like a way to reset the commitment timer so that if (gasp) my computer is off for an extended period of time, it doesn't poison the percentages and make downloading of new work units difficult. This seems to happen when participating in projects with HUGE work units like Climateprediction where the total hours are in the hundreds. I have worked out a way to force it to get new WU's but it's a pain in the rear-end.

While I agree with your idea completely, let me add a tidbit that might help alleviate your qualms.
If you are using the windows version, there is a setting in the screen saver that says "Go blank after xx mins". I can't vouch for the other versions. I recommend using that, as your computer is a more efficient tool when it's not taking cpu cycles away to display the pretty graphics. I love the graphics too but I'd rather get more work done, personally, so I set mine for 5 or 6 minutes as a compromise. By and by... if you are using a newer LCD screen, burn-in is not a problem anymore so it doesn't matter if something unmoving is on the screen for a long time, or so I'm told by some of the manufacturers. This doesn't apply if you are rolling in the bucks and are routing the output of a PC into a Plasma big-screen. Plasma tv's will burn-in much faster than the old CRTs.

You will notice in the new client 4.45 that on the main projects screen, there is a suspend button. Highlight the project that you don't want to get any more work for and click the suspend button. You may have to do this for numerous projects at first. This will force the client to download now work for the available projects that haven't been suspended. Once it has downloaded new WU's, then 'resume' the other projects and you should be ok. You may have to do this repeatedly as it completeles these WU's until your machine's percentages get up there. I had the same problem when I was hospitalized and I couldn't get to my computer to turn it on. My only problem now is that seti thinks I have been bugging their RPC server too much while I was trying to figure this one out, and now it won't let me download any more for a day or so.

A resettable commitment timer might be a nice option for future versions of BOINC. ***HINT*** *HINT* Yes, I'll add it to the wish list later, guys.
4) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC Is snooping on my keyboard? (Message 76898)

It simply marks it as an unknown and to be aware, not as a pest. My concern was, what changed from the old seti client that necessitated this? The old client never was flagged for this, but it could have been listed in the whitelist with Pestpatrol. Based on your description of the tickcount usage, it would be OK to allow KeyPatrol to consider it safe, but I hadn't the inclination to dig through all the Source to find out. My understanding was that windows handled the screen saver event and that you wouldn't need to be paying attention at all to the keyboard.
Thanks for your help.

Why in the name of all that is good and honest is BOINC listening in on my keyboard input? What does this program need that can't be provided by a windows event flag? When running a security scan, the program caught boinc.dll snooping on my keyboard and flagged it as a keyboard logger. If boinc is acting in such a way as to raise the concern of a security program (keypatrol) then this is completely unacceptable. I found that if the program isn't minimized (only in the icon tray), then it is snooping on my keyboard whether it has focus or not. In my eyes this is a severe privacy/security risk since boinc has to have access to the internet and I will probably stop using boinc until this is solved. I am using version 4.19.
