21) Questions and Answers : Windows : Slightly confused about New-SETI (Message 137240)

Hello,

My solution to remember the ID number is as follows:

COPY the number from your email
Create a new text file on your desktop
Right-Click on the new text file and rename
PASTE (CTRL-V) your ID number as the name of the file

Whenever you need your number simply click on the text file twice - very slowly (to invoke a rename). Then right click on the file name and COPY. PASTE it into the logon box.

This works well for me, may work fo you too.

As far as clicking the "remember" box, this only lasts as long as your cookies are valid. If you wipe your cookies (which you should do periodically) then the "remember" feature will need to be checked aain.

22) Questions and Answers : Windows : Granted credit calculation (Message 137086)

I can't make heads or tails out of the crediting system either. I read the online manual about how in theory it works. But I am seeing strange things too. I'm running a little over 50 computers, a majority of them being identical Pentium 4 2.8Ghz systems. The credit being created is odd?

23) Questions and Answers : Windows : help me! why i can't upload finished work units (Message 137085)

The SETI servers are experiencing problems right now. I too have loads of work that needs to uploaded. My systems are downloading work but nothing is getting uploaded. From what I read the old timers here are telling everyone to be patient and the uploads will catch up.

24) Questions and Answers : Windows : i have created an account, what next? (Message 137057)

When you joined you were sent an email conatining a project URL (website) and an account key (long string of letters and numbers).

Under the projects tab in the BOINC manager click on "Attach to new project". A box will come up asking for these two pieces of information. Copy and paste these in and click ok.

The system is VERY slow right now so don't expect to see any work downloaded for a while. The SETI team is looking into why the system is so slow right now.

Keep your account key handy because you'll need it to log into your account. I created a new text file on my desktop and pasted the account key as the name of the file. Whenever I need the key I simply click twice on the file slowly (rename) then right click and copy the file name. Then I can simply paste it when I need to log in.

Hope this helps :-)

25) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC disconnects my wireless network (Message 136917)

Post:
Do you also have a network card installed in your computer? Under network neighborhood (or my network places) (right click - properties) you'll see your wireless connection and if you have a network card you'll see another connection there too. Try right clicking on that other connection (or connections if more than one, "local area connection" or "local area connection #2" etc..) and select disable. This will force BOINC to use your wireless connection.

Just a thought to perhaps try.

-Terry

You can always re-enable the connections by right clicking on them again and selecting enable.
26) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC/SETI Multiple instances on one machine (Message 136914)

Boinc handles multiple processors pretty slick. After the first work unit or so (to get CPU speed stats I guess?) it actually runs two copies of the SETI@home software, one for each CPU.

I chose to install BOINC in all my systems using the service option. Runs great.

By the way, the default for the BOINC settings the others are talking about is to use up to two processors if they are vailable, so your P4s will be maxed out right away.

27) Questions and Answers : Windows : Error-113, again. (Message 136909)
Posted 15 Jul 2005 by Profile Terry Ritchie
Post:
Hello,

This error means that the BOINC site trying to be contacted did not respond. More than likely this is because of a recent outage the BOINC site had and is now deparatley trying to catch up with computers. This could also be caused by your DNS server not updating its tables (maintained at your company or ISP) or your network not allowing packets to get out/in (bad proxy address, gateway address not configured properly, etc..). I assume that you are posting to the board with the same computer you're running BOINC on so I'll bet it's simply poor performance problems on the BOINC end.

Hello,

I too have been a loyal SETI cruncher for a long time now. Quite Frankly, I had the same feelings you have toward BOINC when I switched over - that was two weeks ago! I was especially upset at the fact that my 67,000+ work units are worth nothing here.

But then I started to see BOINC in action and watch my credit grow. My main motivation were the SETI stat pages too. I loved being in the top 10 of people who joined with me. But now I am starting to see my stats grow here, and as another poster pointed out, the science is completely different so I can understand the reluctance on the part of the SETI team to try and figure out how to give credit for classic work on BOINC.

BOINC is not without its problems however, just like the original classic SETI was at the beginning. The biggest problem is VERY poor server/web performance. Just recently there was an extended outage (a little over 12 hours I thnk). That was five days ago and the SETI servers still have not caught up! My 50 or so systems have a huge backlog of data to upload. But remember, classic was like this too at first. (Although BOINC has been running for over a year now?? this should be a non-issue by now in my humble opinion.)

I guess what I am trying to say is that BOINC will start to grow on you. I'm sure we'll all look back in a few years and laugh at how we used to use the "old" classic version.

I forgot to mention that you can obtain your proxy information from Internet Exploder and Mozilla under options -> connection setings:

Mozilla FireFox:

click on Tools - Options - Connection Settings

Internet Explorer:

click on Tools - Internet Options - Connections Tab - LAN Settings

Mozilla:

click on Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Proxies

Your proxy server and port number will be listed.

Hello, my company also uses a proxy. I'm assuming you entered your HTTP proxy info under options in the BOINC software. The standard port for HTTP is 80, but, your system admin may have set it to something non-standard - that was the case with my proxy server. Also, don't type in your proxy beginning with "HTTP://" - leave that off, when I first set up proxy info I added this and nothing got through.

Hope this helps :-)

Thanks John for the answer. Just seems like such a bummer to do all that work and get no recognition for it on the new system.

To Head Troll: Then stop answering people. I've been in computing since the late 70's and have always found that the best source of information is to ask others for assistance. It used to be that computer professionals HELPED each other. I have many answers on other computer topics (I'm a computer teacher) and am always willing to answer a question - no matter how many times it is asked. I find it troubling today that you noobs to computing feel that you can't pass any info on until you have badgered the person asking about reading FAQs and MANS, etc.. This is why Linux has never hit mainstream. Ever ask a question in a Linux forum!? Punks with smartalic answers - "we're too 1337 to answer you." "Dude, you need to read thousands of MAN pages and beat your head into a sensless pulp before we'll lift a finger." Yeah, great way to perpetuate a cause, in this case helping your fellow SETI@Home members.

Punk huh, well I read all those pages and I guess you are just to lazy or is it 1337 as you say. Best source is to read it, dipstick.........I am not a professional, I am a volunteer and I am retired from non-computer related field. SO if you do not like my style do not read my posts, but never lecture me otay.........

Exactly, you read the pages and VOLUNTEERED to help others on this board. I had simple, direct and specific questions that someone like yourself, a volunteer, could answer easily and, I assume, happily since you are a volunteer. But after reading many of your posts I see that your answer is basically the same to all that visit. You had the time to read the entire Wiki, others do not and instead of offering help, you offer a link to manuals and ridicule to boot. The SETI team opted to have S&H users help each other through this time of transistion. Your profile shows that you love the boards most of all because they are a source of amusement. Amusement at fellow S&H user's expense?

Hello, I've been crunching SETI data since day one. I am now making the move to BOINC (yuck). Anyhow, my statistics show that I have 54,000 classic work-units (as of March 15th...) but in actuality I now have close to 70,000 classic work-units. Does this new system give you any credit for old work units? I belong to The Planetary Society team as well. I'm ranked 10th on the classic team site, 400th on this site??? Does this mean I have to start all over?

"oh the pain ... the pain ..."
