1) Questions and Answers : Windows : A quick slick trick to remember your 32 digit password (Message 144297)

Post:
Hello,

Many, including myself, find the 32 digit password to be downright idiotic. But, I have a method I use that makes it real easy to remember and use that I would like to pass on to everyone. You may find this way helpful.

I created a new text file on my desktop (right click on desktop --> click on new --> click on text document) and made the name of it my 32 digit password. Whenever I need my code, I simply click on the file name twice very slowly (this is the same as right clicking on the file then renaming). This causes the file name highlight. I then right click on the highlighted filename and select copy, then right click and paste it where I need it.

Seems to be the easiest way I have found to remember this crazy number.

Also, for those of you who can't seem to get the browser to remember it you have your cookies either disabled in the browser or something (firewall?) is keeping them from coming in.

Thanks for listening :-)

You need 64k or more to keep the graphics from killing the process....

Why ?
Seti Classic runs perfectly under X11 / TkSeti
AND more : there are NO available graphics on Linux for Boinc...

And Einstein@Home Climate prediction runs perfectly.

I suppose this test was intended for Windows boxes.

From what I can gather, SETI Boinc requires at least 64MB of RAM to run in - after your OS loads. Many report that 80MB is the minimum RAM you need so I put this to the test. I have an *old* P166 running SETI Boinc (view my computers - bottom of the list LOL). 80MB would not get it to run, but 96MB got it fired up.

I'm not familiar with Xbox hacking but if there is a way to increase RAM then you should be able to get SETI Boinc working.

Hello,

I just have a quick suggestion. Many, and I mean many, newcomers to BOINC from the old classic SETI@Home complain about not seeing all their classic work units because of the March 15th snapshot. I fell victim to this myself the day I started BOINC.

Please create a link on the home page directing all classic users coming to BOINC for the first time to read a few quick notes.

I keep seeing classic users disgruntled and stating they are leaving the project all together. This is not good for the search. A big bold WELCOME CLASSIC USERS - CLICK HERE FOR AN INTRODUCTION TO QUESTIONS "YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE" would be just the ticket to solve this neverending problem.

Thanks,

I literally had over 1500 units (50+ computers with 30+ units) that needed uploaded yesterday. They have ALL cleared out. The system seems to be working fantastic now.

Way to go!

It is going to take some time for all of the WU's to get uploaded to the servers. Once they are uploaded then the validator will have to work overtime to get caught up. Once your WU's are uploaded and validated then you will start seeing your numbers change. So basically, you are waiting on other people to get their results in and validated.

Uploads seem to be working now - my computers are all uploading more frequently. But I've noticed something rather strange, my total credit and recent average credit have stayed the same since it was announced that a new server is in place. All 60 of my computers report the exact same numbers since 12 hours ago. The crediting system seems to be frozen in time?

Is anyone else experiencing this?

I thought this was "Wish list" NOT "Rag on me because boinc has problems"

The reply's posted here have been appaling. Kill the messenger because we don't like the message.

If you have solutions "Please Post Them"
Posting "I don't care about that" or "It works for me" just wastes everyone's time.

The only usefull information culled from all the banter is how to submit a bug report. Which should have been under contact information on the main site.

No one should have to defend their problems using boinc or defend boinc itself.
All the postings in all the areas speak for them selfs.

After reading through this entire post, I agree with only one post, the very last one from Rob (see above). This area is for wish list items and the whole lot of you attacked him like rabid devil dogs. The entire rant session could have been avoided by simply reading his suggestions and moving on. Everyone is entitled to not liking BOINC if they so desire.

Post:
Hello,

Instead of minimizing to the task bar why not have BOINC minimize to the system tray like classic did? Then you can get rid of "File ... Hide"

Not complaining, just gets annoying that I keep forgetting that minimize does not work the same as classic did.

13) Questions and Answers : Windows : Clustering and Remote Management (Message 139168)

Hello Tavis,

I am not sure about clusters but I use BonicView and it does the trick. It takes a couple extra files being placed in the BONIC folder to get it to work with RPC calls but it is very convienient.

The two files you will need to add to your BONIC folder are:

remote_hosts.cfg place the hostnames of the computers you would like to be able to connect to the BONIC client. 1 per line

gui_rpc_auth.cfg place a password to connect to the BONIC client in this one.

after that you should be good to go.

Semper Fi,
-USMC__KopfJäger

Hey again.
I made the config files so I can use BOINCView. I tested this on one of my machines that's running BOINC. I placed the two cfg's in the c:Program FilesBOINC folder and put the appropriate text into the cfg's then restarted BOINC. When I went into BOINCView to add a new location and hit apply, it says "There seems to be no BOINC client behind port 1043. Use port anyway?" If I hit OK and try to look at the client, I get no results or text from the location.

Once the cfg files have been created (on each target for remote control) that instance of BOINC must be restarted to read the cfg files.

John - That's what I did and I still recieve the message from BOINCView.

Terry - OK, I have a private FTP already setup. I would think that would be better than hassling with email and an attachment size limit (even if you can hold 2GB of email). I will get back with you after classes today. Thanks!

I'll look for your email shortly then.

You probably forgot to move all computers, or somebody is crunching for you and you dont even know :)

I thought of that (not having moved all computers) so I double and even triple checked with family members. I'm 99.99% sure I got them all moved. I would love to know if someone else is crunching in my name. Wish I could figure out how. :)

Hello,

I have moved all of my computers to BOINC in the past few weeks. What's funny is that my classic SETI count is still climbing! I'm averaging 2 to 4 work units each day! I wish that the classic site had a way to see computers like BOINC does.

I was wondering if anyone else had this happen to them?

A group of my students built a beowulf cluster about 3 years ago using 29 computers. They ran Linux and used Persistance of Vision (POV) raytracing rendering software to prove the technology. It worked slick.

The problem they ran into was that software must be specifically developed to utilize a cluster. You can't simply take any piece of software, load it into a cluster and expect it to work.

That was then - I hear that there is a new version of Linux out called Knoppix that is cluster ready. Furthermore, from what I've read, it will split work up between computers no matter what the software is. You might look into this.

A few drawbacks we found using clusters: Efficiency starting falling off dramatically after 20 computers. We found the most effective setup at 10 computers (through a 100Mbit switch). Many others that have created clusters report the same findings - less efficient the more computers added.

Also, I'm not sure a cluster would make processing work units any more effective. 10 computers each processing a work unit every 10 minutes or 10 computers together processing 1 work unit each minute for 10 mnutes. The result is the same. My students used the cluster to speed the process of raytracing an image to the screen. A single computer took 20 minutes to process each frame of their animation where their cluster could do each frame in 60 to 75 seconds. The end result being an animation finished in much less time.

Looks like a great project nonetheless for students to look into and and see if it can be done. My team called theirs "APOLLO" Accumulative Processing Over a Linked Linux Operation. I have a copy of their work on CD if you would like me to send you a copy.

-Terry

Very interesting! I'd like to check it out. Is there a way you could host and I could download an ISO of the CD?

Tavis

Our school's proxy blocks all FTP access. Send your mailing address to me at ritch-t (at) vscc.k12.oh.us and I'll send you a copy of the CD.

If you have access to a server I could FTP to from home I can upload the ISO if you like as well.

Either way, let me know.

I was actually stuck on the same thing; it really isn't too clear what's going on.

Anyway, I have got onto SETI again and I notice that under 'File' of Boinc there is the the option:

Run based on preferences

Which preferences? Where are they set? I need to have Boinc run when nothing else is being run (during the day I do some serious number crunching). Where is this set?

- Malc

When you log in to this site you will see preferences you can set. These preferences will get downloaded to each of your computers when they ask for work, upload work, etc.. Based on preferences refers to those preferences you set here on this site.
