First off I will admit i'm not a bit Linux guy but I've got a few old 500 Mhz machines floating around that would make great Seti processors, I do have some really small harddrives (500 MB - 2000 MB) and would like some help/pointers on where I can get a watered down version of Linux to load onto them and if its possbile to run just the command line version of BOINC using said watered down versions of Linux
Any help would be GREATLY Appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Hi,

Download Debian net install cd, and install yourself a base system with that. iirc the base install is ~200MB and then from there do a apt-get install boinc-client

EDIT: Here is a howto to follow http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_debian_etch Only follow it up to and including page 2

3) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Boinc - Seti - nice (Message 586599)

Hi,

after the last few days without work I finally got some units and got my CPU busy again. A little bit too busy.

I updated my boinc-client to boinc_5.8.17_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu and my S@H-client to KWSN-R2.2B-64bit-SSE2-generic. Starting is done via init-script and start-stop-manager on a Gentoo Linux box.
No matter what how I start the Boinc-Client, via script or directly on the console I get the following behaviour:
In the script a nicelevel of 19 is set and the Boinc-Client perfectly starts up with that level. But the S@H-client simply seems to ignore this and starts with level 0. When I manually set it to 19 it "resets" itself to 0 on the next WU.
I couldn't find anything why the client behaves that way. The old client I had (5.1* as far as I remember) started the S@H-client with the same nice-level I defined for himself.

Can someone give me a hint where to search or how to solve it? Please don't refer to google and RTFM... I already searched there. ;)

Thanks so far
Loci

Hi All,

I am having the same problem as Loci but with boinc client 5.8.16 for Linux/x86 and 5.10.2 for Linux/x86, S@H client KWSN-R2.2B2-SSE2-P4 running on Ubuntu 6.10 and i have to do the same thing and manually set the S@H client to nice 19 every time it starts a WU.

WOW

It is surprising the amout of people there is running Linux (unix) to run BOINC.

I don't run any optermized BOINC or SETI@home clients under Linux, cause I have tryed to compile my own but it has stuffed up on me :-(

Hi Girls and Guys

I have been playing around with BOINC SETI@home on my SME 6.01-01 server.

I have been having problems with the script in this forum at http://contribs.org/modules/pbboard/viewtopic.php?p=100289#100289
where it has been failing to start after BOINC client upgrades.

So I hit freshmeat to see if there was anything for BOINC and I found this script at http://freshmeat.net/projects/boinc/
about: boinc can be used as a console tool to display information about BOINC projects and working units. It can also be used to start or stop BOINC.

Once you have configured the script to match your BOINC setup run the command chmod 750 on the script.

to run the script all you have to do is:
[root@hal2000 boinc]# sh boinc
and available options are:
-a, --apps
-p, --projects
-u, --units
-s, --start
-S --stop
-l, --log [N]
-v, -V, --version
-?, -h, --help

And all i have done to start BOINC at bootup is modified my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file with the line of "sh boinc -s" without the quotation marks.

Hope this is some help to people make it easier to running BOINC on there SME servers

17) Message boards : Number crunching : boinc 4.12 doesnt work!!! (Message 35859)
Posted 13 Oct 2004 by Profile VK5FSCK
Post:
Well I just tryed upgrading to 4.12 BOINC client.

Well it crashed my XP Pro machine and i could not do anything except power the computer off.

The boinc_gui.exe was running CPU at 97% and the setiathome_4.05_windows_intelx86.exe was running CPU at 00% after reboot.

Cause of this i have uninstalled BOINC 4.12 client and gone back to BOINC client 4.09.

If Berkeley are going to keep bring out crap software upgrades, I am just going to take all my computers here off line and uninstall BOINC software and not have anything else to do with SETI@home. Like the old saying goes "if it not broke why play around with it"

19) Message boards : Number crunching : Invalid Cross project ID (Message 31338)
Posted 30 Sep 2004 by Profile VK5FSCK
Post:
The problem i have got with a another computer and boinc S@H account i maintain for someone is that it has a cross project ID.

I have gone though and tryed to log into all the BOINC projects that i can think of and the project ID does not exist.

And cause of this it has been over a month b4 my mothers account has recieved any credits. But yesterday her account has been credited with a few credits.

But in that time my account and other team members have been getting credits on a regular basis.

Has anyone here got any ideas to what is going on here??? And is there away to delete the cross project ID so i can get this account back to normal???

Oh i forgot to mention that this computer is processing 24/7 and averages bit under 24 hours to process a WU. And no one has subscibe this computer and account to any other projects it is just a pure boinc S@H cruncher

Thanks for your time

Hi

Sorry to say the only thing i can think of at the moment to fix is your problem is to reset the project

(1) click on project tab

(2) right click on project

(3) click on reset project.

and download more wu's

Happy crunching
