1) Questions and Answers : Windows : Classic Seti says I have 4800+ units Certificates says 3000+ (Message 194918)

FROM THE BOINC WIKI

SETI@Home Classic Work Units (SETI@Home Only)
This is a total of the number of Work Units that you may have processed as a member of the SETI@Home Classic Project. If you joined the SETI@Home Project after it became Powered by BOINC, then you will not see this row of data in your account statistics.

Note:
The number of Work Units processed for the SETI@Home Classic Project was taken as a "snapshot" and therefore will be out of date. So, if you continue processing Classic work, this number will not change in the immediate future.

However, after the SETI@Home Classic project is closed down, this number, and the amount of CPU Time, will be updated with the final total numbers.

This depends upon the intent of your question. If regular access to the Boinc network is a problem, then you'll LOVE beta as It won't need to connect for many days. If you're saying you can't reach them to change the CC then I'll tell you that this was discussed and Rom is considering leaving 4.45 available for a bit. My guess is that V4 will end sooner or later. Don't sweat it just yet.

Thanks for the response, I have physical access to most of the machines, but I probably won't be seeing at least 2 of them for a while since my work schedule has been flipped, and I won't get out to the other locations very often now. Hopefully at least one of them should still be setup with remote desktop so I can do that, but I'm pretty sure the other one wasn't. I'll have to bug someone turn it back on for me next time there at the other plant :).

[EDIT]: appears I did activate remote access on that other machine at the other plant :), now just need to make sure when I log onto it to update BOINC its not in use. Probably just got someone now thinking there machine was just hacked, ahahaha.[/EDIT]

At least with BOINC I can look up which machines are running where with what client, I still have no idea where the machine turning in classic results under my name is ;)

I've got a question.

I have some computers that I don't have regular access to running BOINC. So there running 4.45 now.

Whats going to happen to them when Version 5 is the standard?

Or just distribute your crunching power around to some other projects.

No need for your computer to go idle because SETI's having some problems.

I am sorry that you did all that. You should try harder to be more honest. I'd imagine most of the honest crunchers stayed behind because of the better community that seti classic has become and hey we only count by one at a time. Most of us are just trying for a goal and are counting one by one. A lot of those dishonest people probably like their numbers going up really fast like BOINC does. Look how big your credit pile is.

Except that the validation process that is part of BOINC prevents cheating and bad work units from receiving credit. So I doubt many cheaters would willingly switch to BOINC.

Thats a bunch of bull S#@%!!!!
So allof the people who have had their computers running 24/7 and have racked up countless hours of data time, get reset back to zero just because of the new BIONIC????

I am not liking this. I am seriously considering leaving all of this behind. Its a shmae, I loved helping out, and I loved the old SETI

Read this thread about Why classic is being replaced.
Is Boinc - Seti really worth the effort?

I was approaching the 10,000 WU mark with classic, but after seeing how much improved BOINC is over classic SETI I went with BOINC.

>I am unhappy that you have only a message board and no real contact.
If your refering to no way to contact the people at Berkeley, there are people involved in the project the frequent the boards often.

>Frankly, if you do not fix the problems with BOINC to make it compatible with >the older operating systems, you are going to loose a very long term member.
I don't have any PCs running anything older then 2000, so no comment on this one. I have heard complaints about Win98 support, I know that CPDN doesn't support 98.

>Additionally, your new web page is about as user friendly as MICROSOFT, and >that is not a positve comment.
This I do not understand. I've found this site much easier to navigate then the classic SETI site. Every page has the navigation menu up at the top.
Home-Takes me to the home page, project news usually lister there as well.
Participate-info on how to join
About-info about the project
Community-Message and help boards
Your Account-Settings for your account
Statistics-sites to give you info on statistics for the project.

Then the messageboards alone are a huge improvement. No more dark purple on a black background. Posts are listed sequentially, as opposed to having to dig thru the thread looking for the one post with the last day in that tree structure.

How much simpler can it get?

The problem is SETI classic is broke.
1.No built in ability to allow for updating science apps(Berkely wants to add new calcuations in the application, can't do that with classic unless EVERYONE downloads the new version).
2.No method of detecting unstable machines returning bad data(a machine overclocked way to far keeps returning useless results).
3.No method of giving out credit based on AMOUNT of work done(WU takes 4 hours, or 10 minutes, same 1 piece of credit granted).
4.No method to deal with times when there just wasn't any work, classic's method was just to send out the same work over and over, as many as 50 times in the past.
5.Classic in screensaver form wasted many CPU cycles displaying graphics, as opposed to offloading this to the graphics card.

Thats some of the broken issues.

Most of the BOINC problems are ironed out, I've had little problems with the whole system. Yes occasionally there are work outages, but the whole magic of this system is that there are other projects out there to fill in those times.

I'd recomend you try attaching to a 2nd project to see how BOINC really works.

You can click the BOINC WIKI link in my sig to read up on some of the other projects that can run alongside SETI.

Don't worry Paul, I was pretty sure you were joking. I still figured adding the Wiki link would help in the future to "teach people to fish".

Sorry about that Paul, I just added a link to the Wiki to my sig, and will make sure to point it out when answering questions.

Well you joined right at the time when Berkeley was working on servers and they created a huge backlog so theres not much work out there.

The system is recovering and is sending out work again now, you just need to be patient.
17) Questions and Answers : Windows : I give up how do I remove my personal info from this site? (Message 140637)
Posted 22 Jul 2005 by Profile SunRedRX7
Post:
Run the BOINC install program, it'll ask if you want to repair, or remove BOINC. Choose remove.

When done doing that, go to the PROGRAM FILES directory and delete the BOINC directory.

Also from reading some of your other posts, your issue with not getting any work were due to some server issues that are clearing up. It does appear your machine managed to download some work.

If you'd like to see how BOINC is suppose to work you could checkout, both of those projects are very reliable, and you'd be able to learn the workings of BOINC a little more reliably till Berkely gets this all sorted out.

19) Questions and Answers : Windows : does boinc run minimized even if "always running" is unchecked? (Message 140038)

Yes its always running when minimized to the corner, UNLESS, you go into your account general prefferences on the SETI website and adjust the various options.

I see from your account you have ZERO computers attached to the project.

So your not very qualified to make any judgement about the new system.

Anyone notice if you go to any other project, LHC, Climate, Predictor, Einstein... for the most part its praise for BOINC?
