Gypsy voluntarily did NOT go outside today. This is rare! Outside must be really miserable for her to do that.

For clarification, Gypsy is toilet trained and her usual reward for doing #2 is to go outside, so she can do all that feline stuff. Marking territory, hunting rodents and bunnies, improving the gene pool of the local bird population, having a growling match with the neighbor cat, you get the picture.

In the morning she did #2, ran to the backyard door and when I opened it, there was a sound as if her paws were squeaking over the hardwood floor, as she backed away from the cold. She did complain thoroughly about me failing to make it warmer outside for a few hours, but decided to stay indoors. She does know how to open the sliding backyard door herself, as long as it is unlocked. It was fun to watch here go there, pry it open a little, then reconsider with a little shudder. Hehe.

But, aside from Hortas, Xindi Aquatics, and the odd shapeshifter, we've never seen anything in Trek that didn't follow the same basic form as us, and I can't believe that's realistic.

True enough.

But even then, there are some general rules laid down by evolution, I believe.

* When on dry surfaces, legs are useful.
* If you have legs, they better reach the ground. Your mass to gravity ratio determines where they are best attached to your body to maximize their usefulness.
* If your size to weight ratio permits and there is an atmosphere, wings aren't a bad thing either.
* Having stereoscopic vision or echo location is a good thing for a predator.
* Having all round vision and good hearing is good in any case.
* Eating what you can see, smell or otherwise "inspect" may avoid eating the wrong thing.
* You don't really care what happens on the other end of your digestive tract, unless ... that's when you need strong legs back there.
* In all intelligent life forms on this planet, the brain is the most energy consuming and best protected organ.
* Let your imagination carry on from here.

One or more of the above criteria shape almost all the life forms inhabiting the surface of our planet. And for intelligent ones, they all have their food intake close to the majority of their sensory input (eyes, ears, nose) and since sensory input is so important as well as it's transmission so vulnerable, their brain is located very close. Or is it the other way around?

There are exceptions to those rules, but you really need to go below the water level to find many of them. That is where our planet has alien life.

Moral of the story? If there are extra terrestrial, intelligent beings, that have evolved (big if), then I think it is most likely they are the product of a very similar evolutionary history. They most likely have something like a brain. They most likely have some sort of sensory inputs close to that brain. They most likely have some extremities to manipulate things and so on.

Will they look like humans as in Star Trek? Nope, probably not. I think they will look a bit less human than a grasshopper does. And judging by the above criteria, a grasshopper looks almost like a human. Has all the same features, plus wings.

Almost human plus wings = Angel. No?

But what crap for a new user to encounter at that point in the process. If there's a limit, state it - and if the user makes a mistake with the unknown limit, at least try to address the real problem with the error message.

Why give any sensible error messages to Windows users? I have never encountered a Windows user who could actually tell me what the error message said, or even vaguely was about. It always goes like

User: So I tried to start this program and all I got was an error.
Me: What was the error message?
User: Error!
Me: No, the details after Error:
User: I don't know, I just clicked OK.

Janni I'm sorry but I honestly have no idea neither what you misunderstood me saying nor the point you are trying to make.

I guess I should not have used the term "game CD" when I meant software in general. Sorry for the confusion.

Most things, that need a computer, usually come with some install CD that works best for Windows, if it works for anything else at all. Think of a universal remote control, some digital voice recorder, a GPS system, video recording systems and the editing software, consumer UPS systems ... the list is endless. If there is software for these things available for other operating systems, it may be found for download somewhere, but don't count on it. You have better chances to find support in the open source communities, when on Linux of FreeBSD.

However, I don't think that this is because the developers choose so. It is a matter of fact that Windows dominates the home desktop market. This drives the manufacturers of those devices to focus on Windows, which means their developers have to focus on it. Logically most OEMs stick to preinstall Windows for the moment. Logically a lot of software, targeted at the mass consumer PC market, follows.

It isn't the developers, it is the situation of the market. The developers I was talking about above are currently developing Windows software, because their employers need that to sell to the mass consumer market. With the failure of Windows 8 to gain any significant market share, Microsoft is in desperate need of Windows 10 to succeed by gaining market share rapidly in order to avoid something like Linux to get a foot in the door, so to speak. That is why they are considering that "free" upgrade.

Word on the web is that it's to attract developers. The larger the install base out the gate, the more apps will find there way into Windows Store. That's allegedly why we are getting a free lunch:)

What are the top reasons, why people buy OEM systems running Windows?

  • This is the cheapest "solution" they find on Amazon.
  • This is all they find at Best Buy.
  • This is all they find at Target, Walmart or anywhere else.
  • Anything else will not pop up a CLICK ACCEPT TO INSTALL thingy, when inserting a game CD.

Developers? I doubt. Developers aren't the one's, who like their customers to be that dumb. Please don't include developers in the blame.

The way I understand that is that a "full retail" license is bound to an owner. It can be moved from one computer to another as long as the computer, it was previously activated for, is retired (or reinstalled with another license/OS).

Is it your wishful thinking or did you try such transfers of license indeed?

The thing is that rather few people buy the full retail. Most people prefer to put another $100 into memory or graphics "now" instead of planning ahead and paying for a license, that will stay with them for a long time. So they get some "customized" system with OEM instead of barebone + full license. It is like buying an old fish from Microsoft rather than buying hook, line and sinker ... no ... wait ... that came out wrong ...

You are absolutely correct on all that. But the question was, does the Windows 7 OEM install qualify for the free upgrade to Windows 10, and the answer is yes.

Which I consider one of the smarter moves by Microsoft recently. Offering "free" upgrade to 10 during the first year after release, together with going back to a more "Desktop PC friendly" UI, may make Windows 10 more successful than 8*. Remember, 50% of all desktops still run 7 and 20% still XP while 8* hasn't broken the 10% mark yet. They seem desperate to do better this time.

Fair enough. And you're not the only one to come to that conclusion. I had to clarify to some coworkers as well who made the same mistake. At least discussing the topic is better than remaining confused.

Currently one can pay for own copy of OS and use it until hardware will die, if one doesn't want any new features/bloats M$ brings with new OS.
There is no any required month/year fee.

This is exactly the case with Windows 10. Nothing has changed.

To my knowledge the "cannot be moved to new hardware" or "until hardware die" and other restrictions only apply to the OEM license, not the "full retail" license of Windows. One might have to call Microsoft Customer Service because the online activation may fail when installing a previously activated "full retail" license key on new hardware. The most important differences between "full retail" and OEM seem to be:

1) OEM is permanently bound to the first computer, it is installed on. It moves with the hardware.
2) "Full retail comes with an upgrade option and both, 32 and 64 bit versions. OEM can only do clean install in the architecture, purchased for.
3) OEM does not qualify for free Microsoft support. That must be provided by whoever installed the OS (usually the hardware manufacturer).

The way I understand that is that a "full retail" license is bound to an owner. It can be moved from one computer to another as long as the computer, it was previously activated for, is retired (or reinstalled with another license/OS). This also solves the "licensing" problems usually experienced with replacing individual components in a computer systems, like replacing the motherboard, CPU or graphics board. One may still experience technical difficulties doing so (BSOD), but that could be overcome by a clean reinstall, using the same license key. One can do none of that legally with an OEM copy.

Will it actually be an "upgrade", or will it be another one of those "reinstall from scratch, then move over your personal data ... if you can" sort of disaster? Just because you don't have to pay $$$ to get a license number for a new version doesn't mean that it technically qualifies as an "upgrade". At least not in my book.

I believe that the "credit" system is the least of the problems, regarding systems not functioning well in SETI land. I am only a database expert and when I see projects shutting down for half a day every week for "maintenance" and "backup", I know they have some serious issues. Most likely they are tied up in crappy technology because their "developers" did the "database design", which is a sure fire method to screw up in my book.

But that is just my guess.

The kitties have AP set to their first choice, but still take MB as a second to keep things running when AP is not flowing too well.

Does it really matter?

Really?

AP work units result in more "credit". Everyone knows. So what? Everyone knows that the "credit" system is broken and that there is no fair measurement of who contributed how much. And even if there was (a fair system), would you stop contributing to the overall effort if you had no chance to ever get into the top 100?

I certainly don't have a chance to ever make it into the top-100. That does not discourage me at all. Is it less likely that one of my computers is going to detect the signal, we are looking for? Maybe, but "credit" is a really poor estimate for that probability.

In the end (if there will be a happy end), there will be a few computers and their owners, who actually detect "THE SIGNAL". And that may include someone, who has no "credit" whatsoever. My guess is that some people here will be really upset about that when it happens. They contributed SO MUCH and now some NOBODY with NO CREDIT is taking ALL THE CREDIT? WAAAAHHHHH!!!

Yes, that is what I think is going to happen. If anything happens at all.

WARNING: This post may contain nuts!

HTTP response code 417 means that the "server" cannot satisfy the request's Expect: header. Obviously the actual S@H scheduler/download/upload servers can satisfy that header when contacted directly by Boinc Clients, so something else must be going on if you get this error all the time.

I got this error with Boinc and used the cc_config-http_1_0 fix until I found out that setting "ignore_expect_100 on" in my squid configuration will work and fix a few other clients, that are just as broken as the Boinc Client.

The "Expect: 100-continue" header is an HTTP/1.1 protocol feature for doing a POST request (like for uploading a result). The specifics are explained in RFC 2616 section 8.2.3. In short: this is nuts. In not so short: when sending a POST request, an HTTP/1.1 client should send that header, then wait some time for the server to respond, but send the form data anyway if it didn't get a response from the server within the timeout (the timeout is defined in the RFC). The server may omit the 100-continue response if it gets form data before deciding how to respond, but ... you see, there is a lot of asynchronous IO and timing going on here. The client and server are both supposed to "listen" while "sending". I've been doing network programming for 30+ years now and have reassembled TCP streams using libnids for the purpose of replaying client traffic from pcap files produce by tcpdump (HTTP as well as other stuff). I do NOT expect an average application developer to get this "Expect: 100-continue" stuff right on first try!

</HTTP_1_1_RANT>

I believe in the S@H-Boinc case you can only get this error if you are behind some form of proxy server, like I am. My firewall is running PF (packet filter) on FreeBSD. All port 80 traffic from the internal home network is redirected to a squid server. I do this in addition to disabling the yum plugin fastestmirror so that not all of my 10+ CentOS VMs download their own copy of each and every RPM when updating. It does reduce bandwidth, but it does also create some problems, like this 417 in case the proxy server cannot transparently satisfy the Expect: request.

My guess is that either your network admin (if at work) or your ISP may be running a similar, transparent proxy configuration to reduce the overall bandwidth. They may not be willing to enable the ignore_expect_100 "hack", because it is actually a HTTP/1.1 protocol violation. So you may politely ask them to enable that proxy feature, but be prepared to get nothing but an odd facial expression in return. If that much.

HTTP/1.0 does not have that protocol feature, which is why downgrading the client to use HTTP/1.0 via the cc_config.xml file solves this issue.

Note that whenever you change Boinc Client configuration files, you need to have the client re-read them (Boinc-Manager Menu->Advanced->Read_config_files). Just hitting "Update" for the project will not have that effect.

Hope this helps (at least in understanding the problem).

I have one system that is running CentOS in a dedicated VM on server hardware (Xeon CPUs and ECC RAM). I just noticed a Error task that says it received signal 11. Getting a SIGSEGV for a CPU task on that sort of system has a very high probability to be a problem in the application. Is there any value in enabling core dumps and collecting them (sending them to) developers?
