Are we on the wrong page…?

A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline.

A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average "Cash for Clunkers" transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.

They claim 700,000 vehicles – so that's 224 million gallons / year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.

5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's US consumption.

And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $70/bbl.

So, we all contributed to spending $3 billion to save $350 million.

How good a deal was that ???

They'll probably do a great job with health care though!!

You figures are correct if everybody who used the C4C program drives their car for one year and then trashes it.

I don't know about you, but I drive my car for quite a few years after I buy it. Cars are being driven for a lot more years now than they were in the past; frequently 10 years or more. So multiply that $350 million by the number of years the vehicle is expected to be in service and use THAT number instead.

You might also add in the expected increase in the cost of oil over that timeframe too.

The best way of disposing high activity nuclear waste is to embed it in a glassy substance, enclose it in a steel container end store it in a salt mine. But also the ocean trenches could be a suitable location, to the horror of environmentalists. Water is a good radiation absorber. I don't think any sensible person would put nuclear waste in a rocket, with the danger of it exploding in the atmosphere.
Tullio

The best way to dispose of high activity nuclear waste is to recycle and reuse it rather than throw it away. Only AFTER it no longer has potential to provide energy should it be thrown away. Putting it in the ground and ignoring dangers posed by plate tectonics or dumping it in ocean trenches is irresponsible.

As for the danger of a rocket exploding in the atmosphere and scattering nuclear waste all over the place... Everyone knows that about one in three rocket launches explode, don't they? And the fuel lines run right through the payload compartment for most efficient dispersal of fragments after exploding! I think not!

It is quite possible to develop an economical launch vehicle that could survive such an explosion and still leave the cargo intact.

The major problem I've found with Solar disposal of nuclear waste (after discussion on another board and some extensive research) is the difficulty of actually getting TO the sun! Using chemical rockets to do this is an extreme waste of fuel and energy, and even an ION drive engine would have a hard time. The most practical way to do it would be using a Solar (Light) Sail since the energy used would be practically free. The only problem currently is that it is untested technology.

Civilizations at, or near our level of sophistication will most likely be using nuclear reactors to produce energy. It's possible that, instead of disposing of their radioactive waste in salt mines like Yucca Flats, perhaps they may decide to use a giant nearby nuclear reactor (think sun) to dispose of it.

It might be worthwhile checking the spectrums of likely stars for traces of Plutonium, Strontium 90, etc.

Discussion???

3. Doctors want to have a decent and comfortable income to meet their needs...don't you?

I agree.
But then it would appear that many doctors have a different idea to me as to what constitutes a need, let alone decent & comfortable.

You paint with too broad a stroke. Doctors are people (human) and most are dedicated workers with a love for humanity. They probably range the same spectrum as any other career (excluding lawyers, of course ;) ).

Every one who reads this please take care ,what i am writting is for real

a very bad virus is on the way ,it spreads by email ,and is called postcard. do not and i said dont open any file with an attachment postcard or a file called post card .If you do the what appears as a postcard burns your c drive.no jokes guys spread the word.

Information from snopes.com regarding the postcard virus hoax: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.asp

Basically, an email arrives stating that an e-postcard or similar from a friend or family member can be read at address such and such. Clicking on the link sends you to a web site that installs malware or worse on your system.

Solution: don't click on links you are not expecting from someone, and usually not even then.

Fridge magnet at a Pastor's house.

While it is important that people can make a living by providing health care, is it necessary that they make such a good living from it?
People dying because they can't afford to get medical help, or even afford the medicine that might help them, just isn't right. IMHO.

There are three primary reasons why Doctor's bills are so large:
1. The cost of medical schooling is enormous and needs to be paid off.
2. The cost of malpractice insurance is out of sight. Mainly because jury awards are tens/hundreds of times larger than justified to provide remedial care and a legitimate portion for 'pain and suffering'.
3. Doctors want to have a decent and comfortable income to meet their needs...don't you?

Because we are bored, and have no workunits.

My computers are running very cool, and I've had to turnon my low tech house heat to keep warm at night.

Einstein@home warms the cpu up pretty good. You could try using it at low resource share for a backup project.

I was surfing last weekend when my computer started doing strange things ,then my screen turned black and message i got after reboot was that windows had shut down my system to protect my computer. I tried everything safemode, scanning with norton-knocked out ,malwarebytes-knocked out, avira-knocked out. so i tried booting from cd-rom found no windows installation on any of my drives,it was like the website in us i was browsing cleaned all my 3 hard drives. so i reinstalled and started the pain full recovery of every drive for selected files. Then i came across these.

It pays to keep Windows, Internet Explorer, and Anti-virus updates current. Best to use a browser other than Internet Explorer.

And of course, stay off those porn sites. ;)

How about sending more of the AP 5.05 and less Seti@home 6.03. More time out in the field processing with less contacts to the sever for more work. Days worth work at a time instead of hours.

Sure the initial change might be a little rough, but I think it will smooth out once you get enough "larger" workunits out in the field.

This is what many people (including myself) would like. The problem is that the AP and MB WUs are split from the same input datasets. To make a long story short, the AP splitters chew through the input files FASTER than MB WUs are being processed. Two or three weeks ago we had the situation where the AP splitters had processed every single one of about 100 input files while the MB splitters were busy working on the first 10 - 20 input files! The AP splitters were basically shut down for a couple of weeks to let MB catch up on the backlog.

My stdoutdae.txt has new seti wu starting and the next message is restarting boinc, so no time when it closed. The machine just restarted after a thunderstorm had to re-sign into my ISP.

So basically you know the system crashed sometime between the wu starting and when you had to re-sign into your ISP. That might be as close as you can get.

I have noticed that Grey objects have little dot grids in them on my screen. Other colors do, too, after I installed CUDA, so that might need to change.

Looking at that computer, BOINC says driver: 17626

I don't work with laptops, so I can't say for sure, but the desktop drivers are numbered around 185.xx-186.xx, so I'd verify if you do indeed have the latest nVidia driver for that system. The older drivers have had all sorts of problems running the CUDA apps.

My machine has just restarted for I think no reason, however there has been a thunderstorm at the same time. Is there a prog which will tell me the exact time it happenned? Do not know if it belongs here so if it gets moved I will understand.

You could go into the BOINC stdoutdae.txt file in your BOINC\DATA folder. If your system is fairly active you should see a gap from when it crashed 'til when you restarted.

Now that I finally have decent hardware for crunching (a single Core I7 Xeon E5520 @ 3.7 Ghz, using 8 threads & 12GB DDR3), I am going to work towards getting Optimized Apps up and running.

My end goal is pretty realistic;
I just really want to break into Top 100 RAC for Seti@Home and maintain for atleast a month or so....that's it. Nothing too tricky.

That's it for now ;)
Allan

Go get the Lunatics Unified Installer here. I believe registration is required to download, but it's free.

Answer a few questions, click a few buttons, and in less than 15 mins per machine you can have all the opt apps you need installed and customized. The only additional info you need is your level of SSE support.

Nope.... didn't work. The ...download_fanout URL didn't show up in the messages, therefore all following steps couldn't be taken.

you can find the URL in your client_state.xml file if you search for the WU name. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO SAVE THE FILE WHEN YOU EXIT OR BOINC WILL GO BONKERS!

I do have the same problem.
Furthermore, I have it for both Seti@Home and Einstein@Home.
Started to suspect my ISP. (VirginMedia, UK).
But if you guys are from other parts of the globe, then it's kinda random.
(also updated BOINC to newest)

Currently out of WUs.

Einstein is currently broke:

Einstein@Home is down as the result of a fileserver crash. I am working on repairing
the filesystem now but I do not have an estimate of how long this could take yet.
Further news will be posted here when we know more.

Thank you for your patience.

Server status page shows what is currently being ran. It looks like they are running Tapes that were previously rejected. You can see that there are large parts that are bad. I still think they should pull out the really old Tapes and run the Astropulse on them. Thats at least 7 or 8 years of work to run through

I believe that IS the plan, once they get the software Radar-blanker going.

I do recall one PDP system we had that suddenly started to re-boot itself when no-one was around. After much headscratching, this was tracked down to the latest batch of fan-fold paper on the line-printer being wood-free and building up an excessive static charge; eventually it would throw a spark to the nearest earthed metal and...

And then there was the janitor who kept unplugging the modem so he could use the outlet for the floor buffer...

Anyone else remember drum printers?

Yes, the IBM FE had a print job that would make it sing (forgot the song though).

Anyone else remember what happened when you printed a line of underscores followed by a page feed?

No, but I suspect it would cut the page in half and then do a paper dump.

The main problem I found with drum printers is that the print line came out wavy when doing a high-speed printout.
