I can add urls . . . I'm not running McAfee, so all I have to go by is what I read in various forums that my searches give me. It appears thus far that it's the browser one has to set them in, if it's URLs. But you are able to set trusted IP addresses or ranges in the Mcafee software. If you can find that setting, set IP addresses 208.68.240.16 and 208.68.240.18 as trusted IP addresses. How are you connecting to the internet? Another thing, boincscr.exe? I don't know that one. ;-) the other parts of BOINC are boinctray.exe (this one detects if your mouse and keyboard are in use, for the "in use" option that you just disabled) and boinc.scr (the screen saver part). By the way, you still best go BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced (on the menu at the top of BM)->Preferences->Clear. This will clear out the local preferences that you still use. Boinc.scr is what I meant . . . :-) I did click clear a few posts ago . . should I do it again?

Ok, did you set them on the web or in the BOINC Manager? Also are you clicking on the update button on the Boinc Manager under the Projects tab? I show the last time any of your pc's had contact with Seti was 1 Feb 2008 12:01:45 UTC. When you click the update button you should get a message in the Boinc Manager log: 11/22/2008 8:16:40 PM\|SETI@home\|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. etc..... Could you post the log from that point? I set the prefs in the Boinc Mgr not on the web . . . I did click update in the projects tab on the Mgr . . . Attach to Seti & then if it still isn't working, post the messages from the Messages tab here so we can see what is going on. EDIT- Keep in mind if you run a 3rd party firewall you will need to allow the BOINC manager to communicate with the client & will need to allow them to access the BOINC/Seti servers. I removed the old version last week and re-installed the latest. I run McAffee v.10 firewall, but allowed Boinc access in McAffee config. It also looks like you may need to check in the Boinc Manager under the setting in processor usage under "Computing allowed" and make sure you have a check next to "While computer is in use". Otherwise you need to do what Ageless said earlier: open BOINC manager->Advanced view->Projects tab->Select Seti and click Update. Also, just to be sure, go BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Preferences->Clear. This is to make sure you're using the preferences from the web site. and then go to your computing preferences, edit them, set Suspend work while computer is in use? to No. The save the changes to the web site (with the option at the bottom of the preferences list). Please make sure you set http://setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu as an allowed URL. This is the URL that BOINC uses to contact the Seti scheduler. Perhaps it's also wise to set http://boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/download_fanout/ as allowed in the trusted zone. Thanks for all your help! Before we do anything rigorous, go to your computing preferences, edit them, set Suspend work while computer is in use? to No. The save the changes to the web site (with the option at the bottom of the preferences list). I have this option selected as a default now. Just to check up on some preferences. See above Now then, BOINC 6 has been available for a while. It's possibly best if you did a complete uninstall of your present BOINC, for as far as it is still on your system. So pass by Add/Remove programs and choose to remove BOINC. This will leave your BOINC directory intact, it'll only delete the executable and dynamic linked library files. Go to Download BOINC and get 6.2.19, the latest flavour. Watch out as the installer has changed. By default BOINC will be installed as a service. See this FAQ for more information on that and why it was done. I installed this version last week after a full uninstall. Install BOINC 6.2.19, using the default directories. Don't go changing them about, or try to put the data directory in the same place as your BOINC goes into. This separation is done for a purpose, more about that in the FAQ. I don't believe I did anything out of the ordinary . . . Reboot the computer when asked. Upon return, open BOINC manager->Advanced view->Projects tab->Select Seti and click Update. Also, just to be sure, go BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Preferences->Clear. This is to make sure you're using the preferences from the web site. Ok - I just did this . . . If Seti isn't available, you will need to reattach to it first. Go BOINC Manager->Tools->Attach to project, select Seti from the drop down list, check the Returning user option and fill in the email address of the account you're posting with and the password of that account. You can double check your email address in your account and also set a new password in case you forgot the last one. Make sure you do this before you try to let your BOINC communicate with the server. Ok - I just did this . . . and after pc/server communications I got a 'you are now attached to this project'. EDIT- Keep in mind if you run a 3rd party firewall you will need to allow the BOINC manager to communicate with the client & will need to allow them to access the BOINC/Seti servers. I started with Seti Classic and moved on to Boinc - my experiences with Boinc however have been forever frustrating moving towards downright annoying. I can not acquire tasks for some reason. Every few months, when I get the desire to want to participate with Seti again, I open Boinc and try my darndest to figure out why it won't work. I even come on here and ask for help - though never with success. So, here I am, trying again - can any one help?

Do you allow the computers to work while you are active?[/quote] I am always connected to the net - (512 speed) - and have the preferences set (at the moment) to always running, although normally I have it set to process when idle. I had an original account when seti first started (before BOINC). I was idle for a while - when BOINC was teething - but then signed up to BOINC. My machine is always on. Up to Feb 08, I noticed that I was downloading/uploading tasks. If it's at all important, I have McAffee with BOINC allowed full access, I also use CCleaner (a cache cleaner) as well as SpyBot. These 3 were recommended by my computer repairer as I have a virus crash about 12 months ago, and I was told using these 3 in combination would ensure a zero chance of virus/hacker. Thanks.

I believed that my SETI had been running since I last installed it (over 12 months ago) but recently got a seti email asking me to return to the project! I always see a 'BOINC is idle' screensaver when I start to log on, and so I always have beleieved that I am running SETI. Apparently not. After checking all preferences and tasks (it seems that the last task I did was back in February!!) and so I uninstalled .30 and installed .45. Still nothing happens. All I get is 'scheduler request pending' under the Projects tab with no results. Under the Transfers tab the two buttons aren't active. Here is what my latest Message states: 'Master file download succeeded'. Yet nothing seems to happen. Any suggestions? Thanks

The system works fine at the moment, except that the validator doesn't keep up with its workload. But that does not impact d/l and u/l. Your system seems to have worked well from 10th July to 26 July. What - if ever you can remember - did you change on 26th? In any case it could be helpful to print lines from the message tab, including the ones before the request-deferring cycle begins. :-)= Greybeard I don't recall changing anything - my system is the same as usual . . . The message lines before the tab read: sending scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl, etc requesting 0 secs of work, returning 10 results :-)

I understand that there is currently a problem with the whole boinc server system(if I understand the tech news correctly). However I would like to confirm that the problem I am experiencing is the server end and not my PC. The BOINC manager message window continues to attempt upload/download yet it seems to cycle in and our of its attempts. That is, it repeats the same messages over and over: - scheduler request . . . failed - no schedulers responded - deferring communication with project for 58secs Is this normal/to be expected? Or should i be concerned that there is an error my end? Any help appreciated.
