I was wondering what operating system would you run on this server?

this machine has a UltraSPARC-II processor (ok, it has LOTS of them :)), whose architecture is called 'sparc64' in the unix world.

the most famous operating system for UltraSPARC cpus is Solaris from Sun itself.

other unix/unix-like systems that run on sparc64 are:

- FreeBSD
- OpenBSD
- NetBSD
- Linux (e.g. debian or gentoo)

im pretty sure there are more operating systems for the sparc architecture, but these are the most famous ones.

i managed to install FreeBSD and BOINC on my old peacock notebook (33mhz/4mb ram/60mb hdd/9" bw-display) - cause it has no lan or pcmcia slot, i used a plip (tcp/ip via parallelport) connection to download/upload the workunits :)

unfortunately, the cpu didnt agree with the 2 weeks deadline :/

I dont know any exact specs, but you can see some seticlassic servers (including their names) on this page

And as you see on the status page, the Sun E450 is now used for setiboinc (ok, could of course be a new one :))

where did you heard about a new opteron system ?
afaik the only use SUN servers - but if there's a new system, its not operating yet

I really do not know what is too hot and if I need more cooling?

most recent cpus are designed to support temperatures up to 100°C ( afaik athlon-xps should run fine @ 90°C )

but: i really encourage you to buy some good cooling system; it cant be that good to run a system at such high temps :)

my systems/temperatures:
dagobert [p4@3.2ghz] : 45°C ( biiiig heatpipe + 120mm fan )
bolivar [tb@1.33ghz] : 50°C ( 120mm fan )
trophy [dual pII@.23ghz] : 20°C ( 2x 80mm fan )
hive [ath@.7mhz] : 30°C ( 2x 80mm fan )

btw, your temps are fine.
