The shuttle is safely back to earth. Would this be the last shuttle mission? What is your prediction?

The russians are working together with the ESA now, to launch the soyoez from french guilliana, so it can take bigger payloads in it to orbit. And the Ariane 5 is being remodified to launch supply modules for the ISS. Would this make the shuttle obsolete?

Or will there be a bigger orbit in the future, or an space elevator? I am looking forward to what is going to happen in the near future!

Q169:Who was the 1st woman to serve as Pilot on a Shuttle mission to the ISS?

In 1995, the first woman pilot in the US Space Shuttle program was Lt. Col.
Eileen Marie Collins.

Q170:What is the name of the airfield at Kennedy Space Center where the Shuttle lands?

The SLF is not an airfield. It belongs to the kennedy space center. Although, they are planning to use the strip for commercial use. I presume to raise cash.

The article about that is here: http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/space/a/shuttleland.htm

Q167: What is the maximum payload for the current model of the ARIANE?

10 tons is correct. A bigger version is going to be tested as soon as the beginning of 2006. This one is also able to launch a supply module for the ISS. This will fly to there without people.

The ESA is also able to launch rockets or other spacecraft far more efficient then the NASA.
Q168: Why is that?

The launch site at french guilliana is (almost) at the equator. The turning speed of the earth is bigger over there then at cape caneveral. That makes it possible to launch bigger rockets, with less fuel. That speed advantage can make a big difference.

Q170: The ESA is currently not able to get people into orbit. This is going to change. How does the ESA do this before the end of 2006?

Q171: A smaller new rocket is developed by the ESA, to put smaller sattelites into lower orbits. How is this rocket called?

Well, that is a shame. The ESA is a very interesting space alliance of some european countries. And of course, the states are not paying very much attention to it. They only pay attention to europe, when it goes terribly wrong, or when they can draw profit from the situation. But about media manipulation, you can write a whole new topic.

Back to business:
Maybe when the shuttle program ceases for a longer time they will pay more attention. Not only because the ESA can deliver a lot of freight to space. But also there is a Ariane 5 with a supply module for the ISS, witch will go in operation as soon as 2006.

The current Ariane 5 can carry a lot of tonnage.

Q167: What is the maximum payload for the current model of the ARIANE?

The ESA is also able to launch rockets or other spacecraft far more efficient then the NASA.

Q168: Why is that?

I will think about some harder questions in the upcoming day. I live in the netherlands, where we have a very big space expo. I might find someting there :)

In reply to black piet:

If you are changing the priority in order to crunch faster, a better solution is to evaluate wich programs and processes need to be running at all times. When you close some of them, the crunching will improve slightly.

An example: When i shutdown msn, on average my cunchtime shortens with 60 seconds.

Ach, i will see how CPDN preforms, I think it's allright if it takes a little more time, and the wu's are only expiring after a year.......

I will try the preformance!

Edit: and it does not take so long at my athlon 64, because i am running CPDN for 1,5 days now, and i already have gotten credit! How is that possible?

I've flushed whatever was possible for me. May be the problem is with my ISP's DNS. So if I could have the right adress to call, just putting it in my host file for a while would solve everything.

Or the adress of a public DNS Server working fine ...

Thanks in advanc

Remember, when you can browse with your internet explorer, it is okay, unless you are using somekind of proxy server.

I think 10% is al little too much for a backup project, but OK, i will change and try.

Well, i leave it this way then. It wil settle out because the CPDN wu's have a deadline of one year.

But there is no option that BOINC will run the wu with the nearest deadline first?

Hi,

Next to seti i am also running CPDN. In the general perfs the recommended setting of 60 minutes to switch between applications confuses me.

The resource sharing is as follows: 99.9 seti and 0.01 CPDN. I have CPDN mainly as backup project, for when seti is off.

On what way is the time divided now? At this moment my pc is on a day, switchin 24 times between apps. So 12 hours seti is on, and the other 12 hours CPDN. This was not really my intention. Or is it going fine after a time? How is this going? I have no experience with double projects......

I recently changed from SETIathome Classic to BOINC. I now notice that not much progress is made between the time I step away from the computer and when I come back, say during a work day or overnight. Will BOINC defer to other background programs such as GOOGLE desktop? Is that why it seems to suspend itself? What can I do about it?

There are a few possibilities. A work unit takes on average pc's about 4 hours. Faster and slower machines may shorten/extend the time to under an hour to 8 hours or more.

When your pc is idle, and when you come back and then open the boinc screen, it takes a few seconds to refresh the status.

The time it takes for your PC to crunch a single unit looks a little long to me seen your processor. A 2.6 GHZ machine can do it in less (my sempron 2600 takes 3,5 to 4 hours on average). So i suspect there is a program running on the background that takes processor capacity.

There also is a so called TAL in africa (TAL stands for Trans Atlantic Landingzone)

Edit: Now i see that the combined Spanish-U.S. Airbase in Moron Zaragosa is also a possibility.....
