1) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Computer replacement (Message 723843)

Hi,
I have one computer replaced and kept the same attributes (computer name, for example). Right now I have two entries with the same name in the BOINC computer list, but since they are different in hardware details, I cannot merge them using the Seti@Home web (account) interface.

Any other way I can do this merge?

Thanks,
bjh

Seems, the problem is solved ;-)
600 MHz aren't 1600... And because SuSE 9.3 is a resource hog, the approx 3 times slower CPU speed results in 4 times slower Seti.

If you want the CPU to go full speed at all times, you'll have to disable the "Throttle CPU" option in ACPI. I don't know how it's done in SuSE apart from disabling ACPI altogether in the kernel-boot-line "vmlinuz [...] acpi=off"

By the way, I would leave the settings like they are. By this the power consumption of your CPU should be very low, so (if its a notebook) the temperature of the system will stay so low, you'll be able to keep working with it on your knees.

Not really. As I said, I was comparing the performance with the one I had with Mandrake 10.1 on the same machine - no changes whatsoever hardwarewise.
The statement about SuSE 9.3 as being a resource hog, I'm not sure I agree there - all the other applications I run behave at least at the same level as in the previous case (Mandrake 10.1), if not even sensibly better. Why would BOINC be different?
I will check the throttle setting - thanks for pointing that out that might be and explanation - but 4-5 times slowdown? Doesn't quite add up.
And no, I don't quite care about working with it on my lap - I never do that (I don't quite understand why the laptops are presented as a "lap" thing - I'd say one can hardly find a more uncomfortable position than that one. :-) :-) :-)

As i can see itfrom your stats your machine is a pentium M. My guess is that the kernel is throttleing you cpu (acpi enabled? modules loaded ?).

what´s the output of "cat /proc/cpuinfo" ?
it should show you the current speed you cpu runs on.

Hi,
I switcheed from Mandrake 10.1 to SuSE 9.3 and noticed that the same copy of BOINC (ver. 4.43) runs 4-5 times
slower on SuSE than it used to do on Mandrake 10.1 on the same machine. The CPU looks to be pretty exploited too. Any idea on why this happens?

Thanks,
Jean
5) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Client Error for most of the WUs (Message 116322)

Hi,
Since I saw this constantly happening with at least 5 versions of BOINC (three proper releases and two development releases) it would mean that bad software is pretty much ruled out. Not only that, but it also seems that there are not that many other reported instances.
So I guess it's the overclocking (I just upgraded the memory a couple of weeks ago and while happening at a lower rate than before, it's still there nontheless), altough, as I said, I didn't recall tuning it up. I'll have to check again.

Thanks,
Jean

I am using the precompiled version.
I'm afraid I have no idea what overclocking means in this context.
Is there a configuration setting I can tune or something of that sort?

Thanks,
Jean

if the CPU is overclocked, you could be getting unpredictable results. what are the exact client error messages you are getting?

Oh, now I see. You mean the CPU being overclocked. As far as I know it is not.
The errors are something in this line:

2005-05-16 18:14:31 [SETI@home] Unrecoverable error for result 20dc04aa.28373.1808.584662.207_3 (process got signal 11)

I run BOINC for SETI@home on 3 different computers: one on Linux (Mandrake 10.1) and two on Windows XP Home Version.
While the Windows instances never error, the Linux version starts well each time I upgrade to a new version and in a matter of days/weeks, starts getting more an more "client error" instances. I noticed this constantly since I started with version 4.19, up to 4.25 and with all the development versions (right now I use 4.32). They all behave the same.

Any idea what can be the problem?

Thanks,
Jean

And what about the other question: if I start using BOINC now with the statistics as they are today, wouldn't all the work from now on overlap with what it was done since Apr/May 2004?

Silly question: will this last sync with the SETI@Home statistics finally show the right number of completed WUs?
I just tried BOINC a couple of days ago and my account shows the statistics for April or May 2004. This is a bit unfortunate for my case, since starting with August I got a better machine and almost doubled the speed of processing.

What would happen if I switch to BOINC for good today, when there is still this big discrepancy between the WU number showing in my BOINC account vs. my old SETI@Home account?

Hi,
I just started using the Boinc-based SETI@Home client
after using the old version for 5 years and I noticed that my account has the credits updated only up to last May (2004), altough on my side the data crunching rate almost doubled my credits since last May.
Is there a way to update the account to the latest credits I got from the old SETI@Home client?

Thanks,
Jean
