Thanks, Mike. I feel like a rank beginner. I knew that if it acts screwy, just reboot. But I forgot this time. So, I did, it seems to be working with one unit running, two ready to run and five or so more downloading. I just have to drill it into my head AGAIN: Before giving the computer a swift kick with your boot, reboot. Patsy

I noticed today after uploading the last few had "computation error" after them. I downloaded more work, then discovered all the downloaded work had "computation error" following them. Here is what the messages say:
6/24/2005 9:31:35 PM|SETI@home|CreateProcess() failed - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (0x20)

Any idea what the other process is or why SETI stopped running?
3) Questions and Answers : Windows : Has BOINC messed up my computer? (Message 94855)

I upgraded to BOINC a couple of weeks ago and added Einstein to Seti. That's when my computer started acting up. First, I just thought it was because whenever Einstein finished, it stated there was a computation error and that crashed the computer. So, I trashed Einstein. SETI worked okay for a few days until 4.10 downloaded. Then, the same thing started happening. So, I read about the problems and trashed 4.10. Now, even with 4.09, my computer (WinXP on an HP Pavilion) goes to sleep and the power monitor is on to not sleep. By sleep, I mean the computer is not running at all, but didn't quite crash. I move the mouse, wait about 3 minutes and usually it powers back up but takes a minute between each task. When I finally get it back up, BOINC manager is on "Run always" instead of the "Run only according to preferences", which is what I keep it on. So, for the moment we have trashed all of SETI and will see if that cures the problem.

Thanks to both of you. To RDC, I think I now know what to look for under the "transfers" tab and how to tell when it's finished. To Murasaki, I don't think I want it to dial by itself, at least not yet. Something about it not needing me and I want to be needed. And I finally figured out to expand it to see the messages. I'm was a little slow on the uptake of that yesterday. Anyway, thanks to both of you. I think this will be a little more difficult than having the kids just check the bottom of the screen, and if it's got a red blinking satellite dish, go ahead and get another unit.

Please understand, first of all I am not grousing or complaining. I just need a little plain English help, not IT computerese. I have been a member of SETI for almost 3 years. I have downloaded BOINC for SETI and Einstein. However,I do not have DSL or other continuous linkage with the 'net. I have to sign on with a modem. I have figured out how to tell when the work is finished and how to start the download of another work piece. However, I am not sure how to tell when the work piece is finished downloading so I can sign off. SETI made it simple, once you got the 351 whatevers, it started working. Now, I think I have probably cut off a download or two since I simply don't know when it's safe to do so. Can anyone help this old computer non-pro?
