Desktops: Sir Killalot, AMD Sempron, mandrivalinux '08
Dead Metal, AMD Athlon, mandrake linux pro 2006
Fission Chips, the old-skool box, P1, Windows 98
Laptops: Sergeant Bash, Pentium dual core Windows Vista :(
Shunt, P4, windows XP
Hypnodisc, a baby Libretto! P1, windows 98, rock solid
and two EEEPCs both running Xandros Linux (ASUS version, duhh)

haven't named the EEEs yet. They get out and about a bit and don't crunch all the time. But generally - as you may gather, I don't dump computers, I make 'em crunch. Even if it takes them 6 weeks to run a SETI unit.

all named after 'characters' from UK Robot Wars - mostly because Sir K. the boss lives in a misleadingly hardcore gaming case with fans'n'lights and looks just like the said robot.

needs an upgrade though. actually runs like a dog - but don't tell him I said so :)

Sorry but it's not a Vista problem, I'm running XP. Ditto on it is only happening with SETI.

sorry skywarrior, I didn't intend to imply it was a global Vista issue, was simply reporting the fact that with me, it's only the Vista box that's affected so far, and this is the machine that's had overheating/crashing issues as well. I haven't had a computer this unstable since I last ran windows ME which is quite some time ago !

Anyway ... Since I last posted I've aborted yet another serial resetter; this one reached around 40% then reset to 0%; then ran to about 11% and reset; then ... well I dumped it.

squirrelly WUs? Or what? any further information gratefully received.

This problem just started for me, or at least I just noticed it for the first time. Yes I use throttling (95%), but have done so for over 2 years without seeing anything to lead me to believe there were any problems. 13fe08ad.16352.8252.6.7.65_0 was the first task on which I observed the behavior. I had checked on BOINC and observed that this task was 90%+ complete with 6+ hours of CPU time. When I checked back a couple of hours later, CPU time was @ 8+ hours and the task showed less than 1% complete.

just exactly my experience - only over the past few days! What is going on?
I am happy to participate in BOINC and SETI, but am not willing to waste hours of cycles until I am convinced that the problem has been determined and fixed, or at least that a way has been found that halts the behavior.
Hopefully I have provided enough information to assist in solving the problem. If not, please do not hesitate to ask for additional information.
Thanks, skywarrior

Just wanting to add my 2c worth - just began having this exact same problem with SETI (ONLY - other projects are just fine) since about 4 days ago. I've experimented with CPU throttling, sure, I'm running a laptop which tends to overheat when I allow 100%, but I've succeeded in finishing several tasks under throttling, it's only the past 4 days I've been having problems. Have aborted 2 tasks now since they just reset to 0% after running up to 9 hours! I can't afford to waste my time this way, just wish someone on the project would suggest a sensible solution.

jd.

btw I've never had such a problem on my linux, WinXP or Win98 boxes. Only VISTA! would like to know also if there is a specific reason for that?

Just wanted to apologise to all who responded to my newbie post and didn't get a reply from me. All responses were much appreciated. I'm hanging in there. The bl**dy vista thing is currently crunching some einstein stuff since it seems a shame to leave its two fast-ish processor cores idle - tho' I note with interest that I'm receiving units from this alternative project approximately 10 times the size I ever got from seti! Just as well vista-thing is a bit faster than this machine.

Meanwhile the linux box ie. this one has reported a result and my a/c has received credit. But there's no way I can attach to another BOINC project with this computer and run seti as well; it's just too slow. So I'm leaving BOINC running, reading the 'no work' messages, and awaiting events.

best of luck and here's to the revival of the project some time this week.

Matt, this is my first post on the forums, just because as a long time seti contributor I've been caught up in the car crash.
Can't offer any hardware or any techie suggestions since I'm just an end user on various platforms - but can't help wondering what will happen to the work currently in progress on my linux box which has been delayed by almost a week because of a simple hardware failure (dead power supply - day job meant I couldn't sort it out until now). 'Cos this box isn't the fastest in the world it's going to be some time tomorrow morning before it attempts to report; do you think it's worth carrying on with it, or should I abort the task and wait until y'all are back up?
in other words if I let this box carry on number-crunching and reporting, what will happen to that report, assuming you're able to get things up and running again in the next week or so?

[btw because of *quite* a few hardware problems I've been contributing to this project from a win vista laptop for the past couple of weeks. I'm almost ashamed to admit it! but so it goes.
Windows Vista? I hate it already.]
