Anyone else want to help out Seti/BOINC by donating during our on going "users ran" fund raiser. :) There are various links in this topic for donating to Berkeley. I know at least the credit card one allows a note to be put in as to what you'd like the donation to be used for.

^^^^^
In other words....BUMP!! :)

I know you were quoting the person above me, but yes, I checked yesterday and again this morning and I'm all caught up on MS patches. Although my problem went away now and what seemed to fix it had nothing to do with MS patches.

Just my 2 cents,

The way I imagine how the Seti/BOINC project is and possible other BOINC projects: Imagine trying to build a huge 747 passenger plane with only a $5000(USD) yearly budget. Eventually you'll be able to get the plane built how you want it to be, but it takes time.

Now I know I'm probably exagrating a little and the $5000/year is simply a number I made up, but it helps explain why thing might not always go how the project teams would like them to go.

I'm sure alot of the problems they've been having here would just go away if they could get a huge quad Xeon(HT)processor enterprise server with like 2-4Gb of RAM, along with nice large and very fast 15K SCSI drives in a hardware array. But it's tough to do if you don't have the budget for it. Coming from a IT background, I figure if the Seti project team is successfully able to run a database server with all the connections the Seti/Boinc has on a software array and probably not a very highend server, then WAY TO GO, Seti/Boinc Team!!! :)

I had a problem similar to this yesterday when I finally upgraded my work computer to Boinc 4.09. I'm running a P4 2.4 w/ HT turned on. I already had SP2 and all other updates from Microsoft. My problem finally went away after I uninstalled Boinc(lost about 5 WUs :(...), then deleted the BOINC directory and reinstalled then reattached to projects. I did get a short time after that the problem came back, but I simply let it set over lunch and when I came back it was good. I haven't had any problems since. I had tried letting it sit for a couple hours before trying the uninstall/reinstall process.

I figured it was about time that I help out my favorite project other then just provide unused CPU cycles. My donation of $50 should be on it's way, earmarked for the Seti@Home BOINC project.

Matt, BOINC/SETI@home might not be holding an offical fund raiser, but the people in this thread(other then Berkeley employees) are holding an unoffical fund raiser. :)

Good Call, Purdy! I'd just read you reply to Paul D Buck.

At work, I make a daily backup of a couple live DBs that are operational and online, and if I want I can restore down to the second before a crash as long as I have the most current transaction file backup. Worst case, I'd have to restore to the night before and when the restore is finished the DB is fully operational and usable. Because we don't run 24 hours, I don't need to backup more then that, but if I needed to I could backup the transation logs minutely so that the worst you'd lose is 1 minute of data.

Of course, this is with enterprise level DB servers, like MS SQL, Oracle, etc. They are fully capable of a online backup then can restore and result in a fully operation DB. Although I've done the same with "sub" enterprise level databases like Pervasive.

I'm coming in new to the Seti BOINC testing after using Seti@Home Classic for a few years, but I'm throughly saddened today when I finally stopped by these forums at the maturity level of most of the posts here, especially the one I quoted below.

First of, most of the time these type of projects don't have a large budget so they won't be able to buy complete top of the line hardware.

Second, I'm sure that they do backup more then once a week, but unless you've gone through a true server hardware crash, please don't even try to sound like you know what you're talking about. RAID crashes can be the worst since it is possible that it corrupts you data for a few days before the crash, thus making a restore from the night before impossible, especially with databases.

Third, if anyone thinks they have all the answers then by all means, donate some money to the project so that they have more resources. Plus instead of just stating the obvious, provide constuctive suggestions instead outright flames and attacks.

Fourth, since the Seti BOINC project seems to basically be in a beta phase yet, if you don't like possible downtime and lost data, then by all means run the Seti@Home Classic until they force people to switch over to the BOINC version once they have all the bugs worked out. It's the same as people beta testing online games, they moan and complain when there's a problem when beta WILL HAVE PROBLEMS, so deal with it or leave until it's out of beta.
