Been on BOINC since the start but for the last 6 months or so I've been away. I've retunred to 5.2.8 and I'm a little confused.

Previously P4s with hyperthreading would run 2 instances of setiathome_4.18 and so utilize 100% of the CPU. Now it appears to have changed and boince only uses 50%. Is this normal for BOINC now or is there some new thing I have to do to enable the other 50%?

Yes. Weekly backup. Server down for several hours and then flooded for several more.

Read server status page for current condition.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html

Weight several hours at least, and try again.

Don

Just checked and according to that page, everything is working normally.

It seems to be a weird problem as so far I've got 1 of 5 PCs working. They are all on the same router without a proxy to go through. 2 of the PCs have never had any version of BOINC and the one that worked had a an old version 4 which I did not remove before upgrading.

read the Wiki please

That's all well and good but that is NOT the problem. I know for sure that google can be found and there is no proxy on this machine!!!!

Something ELSE is going on. High server load maybe? Whatever the answer, please don't just refer to that wiki as if it answers every problem. IT DOES NOT!!!!

Try with the solution Paul from down under has found out: here.

:-)= Greybeard

Thanks for the link. I just tried that to no avail.

Just like in classic, every work unit is different. Some require more crunch time than others, you can't look anymore at number of WU's completed. Only the CPU hours cruncing that count.

8) Message boards : Number crunching : Recent Average Credit, what's it for? (Message 1825)

Recent Average Credit can be a useful tool for you to monitor a particular machine's performance. If the RAC suddlenly starts dropping on one PC, it must be having trouble. This is especially useful if you have a farm where you cannot always monitor the machine.

As to why RAC is rankable, is a mystery. I find that of no use. I could care less who's average is increasing.

First off; patience.

Second, in the early days, it will take awhile to get the credit system rolling. Alot of factors affect how you get credits.

For those who already have alot, they are in fact lucky that they submitted work units where the other results were similar and done quickly. If you are unlucky in the beginning, you might return quickly, but the other hosts are either slow, having problems or some other factor that delays thier submission.

Another thing that happened alot in beta was that people had problems and would reset the project. This meant that if one of the WUs you had finished was affected by another host's reset, you would be waiting weeks for the WU to go out again and hopefully get accepted this time with a good result.

As others have said, after a few weeks, there will be enough users running that you will hardly notice the few WU's that get held up in the "system". Your recent average will not be affected by a few stray WU's unless you only crunch with one old PIII for example. :-)

Yes, it is working again now.

Yes true, if he sets it to not run unless idle for 3mins. I meant that it will give up CPU cycles anyway, without having to tell it to stop when doing other stuff.

I remember using seti classic and I did have computers (albeit very old ones now) that did not like doing anything else if seti was running. I think alot of people will use this idle setting because of this experience. I just hope people try it first without to see how much better boinc is at sharing.

Yes, because typing a few words into explorer is not really very CPU intensive, maybe only 1 or 2%. So as far as boinc is concerned, you are not using your CPU.

> My wishes are for the setiathome client only to run when I am not using the
> computer.

I have been running beta boinc on one of my main machines for months now and even run video editing software whilst boinc is running. I have NEVER experienced a slowdown with other software because of it. When the video software needs to crunch it's own data, say like compressing a video for a DVD, boinc takes second stage and hardly does anything.

> If this problem is not addressed I feel many will abandon the effort.

Please don't abandon boinc just yet, it has hardly begun. :-)

I have been using the firedaemon for months now in the SETI Beta test. Works great and it's FREE!!!!

I found out by accident after reading a post in the beta forum. It really was C**P they way we were left out of the loop. Only very late today, was there a brief mention on the beta news . . . 2 days late.
