21) Message boards : Number crunching : The last day of S@H (Message 2044131)

I had 4 machines crunching SETI. One ran out of work in the last hour and has been turned off. Now there are 3. I'll keep them running after they finish their WUs. One is the one I'm using to send this message and is my home laptop anyway. Another is for my ham shack. The last is my previous consulting laptop, but is still used for other purposes, as well. When SETI WUs are done it will be the end of an era, and not a happy time.

And another has finished. Not shutting it down, shifted over to PrimeGrid. SETI is winding down.

And yet another has finished SETI. Just one to go, and it has enough to keep it busy for another day or three. PrimeGrid on 2 now.

I'll continue to crunch SETI until my cache of WUs runs out. Then 100% of my crunching will be for PrimeGrid. It's been a good run of over 20 years for me.

And, based on the notice from the folks at UC Berkeley, you'll wind up 3 days short of making that 21 years. Bummer, to say the least.

Indeed...but as long as they don't shutdown the upload servers, I'm aiming to have a cache of SAH tasks available that I can still crunch on 3rd April 2020...and send the completed tasks back for validation... lol

I believe that this website and this messageboard will remain open after 31st March.

That is what the notice says. I have a number of jobs on some computers that will continue to run after the end of the month, as well. I'll let those queues run out on their own, then shift to other jobs.

I hit 20 years of SETI @ Home today (PST). Amazing what listening to Art Bell one night started. And we still haven't found any aliens. Oh well, we'll just have to keep looking.

19 years ago I saw an article about SETI on Art Bell's (RIP) web site. Downloaded it and starting crunching. Still going strong (but not with anywhere near the daily average). Next year - 20 years. Good grief.

Got it. Thanks. We'll just have to wait, then. Now if I could just get some GPU units...

With the new version 8 on SETI work units my computer has downloaded a few. However, they haven't started executing. These would be expected to run on the internal GPU on my I5 processor. I shouldn't have had to do anything, this change to version 8 should have been automatic.

Any suggestions on what to do? PrimeGrid is running fine on the main cores of the processor.

Thanks.

Sounds like a good day to "upgrade" a machine from 8.1 to 10 (Windows, that is). :-)

Wow, I forgot that I joined on May 20th 2009.

Happy anniversary to you all.

Mike

I think you meant May 20th 1999... :)

An interesting stat for the Class of 1999-05-20, of the 2,236 users
registered that Day, 350 are still banging away... :)

Out of the 190 that joined the day I did (11/7/1999) 26 have done something in the past month. Past day is a much shorter list. And I'm still #1 in total contributions for that class. :-)

There isn't another 15th Anniversary thread that I can find (time for new glasses?), so here's one for you all. On my 15th Anniversary with SETI. That's a lot of crunching. And a bunch of machines that are no longer with us.

There's got to be a 15th anniversary thread around here somewhere. After all, this is mine on SETI. :-)
