Done with SETI because of the lack luster program BOINC
(Message 135437)
Posted 11 Jul 2005 by Tony Keller Post: OK - I'll list my likes and dislikes of BOINC vs classic SETI. Like - The graphics don't use 50% of the CPU when running. This is the only thing I like about BOINC. Dislikes - 1. Use of the account key - this is definitely a geek thing not a user interface thing. My degree is in CS and I would never ask a user to enter a key like this. It took me two days to set up a BOINC account, while it took only two minutes to set up a classic account. 2. Classic SETI@Home kept statistics for people by day. You could see how well you were doing compared to a small group as well as the larger group. As someone who saw themselves move up be in the top 1% as they added computing power, I can attest to how powerful a motivator this is. 3. While I know there was a lot of neat software like SETI Spy created by third parties, I see none of that for the BOINC software. 4. Why isn't the classic statistics added to my BOINC account. All in all, I have to agree with Mr. Gamble. While I really believe in the SETI project itself, the SETI@Home project is leaving me behing. There is just no motivation for me to pay for electricity when I seen no tangible benefit. |
