1) Message boards : Cafe SETI : New Impact craters found in Africa (Message 281655)

Post:
Right from home, just by using Google Earth, Emilio Gonzalez a SETIathome user has found two new impact craters in Africa.

If you are interested to read about it (in English) you can visit: http://www.astroseti.org/impacts.php

This page belongs to the Astroseti.org web site which publishes astrobiology news translated into Spanish, BUT in this case, the Spanish news was translated into English.

It is quite interesting and it has received already the approval of several authorized people on the subject.

The main Boinc web page, which you should have passed to get to this section, says the project database is having problems. NO ONE is getting thru!
Also the server status page, available here:

OK thanks, got the message.

Post:
Installed directly from SETI's program, the new official recommended CC4.45
I did install correctly and restarted equipment.
At the time I had a Climate unit at a 56% advance, 2 units from SETI to be reported back and none to crunch. Also had two units from Einstein.
When 4.45 started working, it kicked out my climate unit and the SETI units dissapeared.
A new Climate unit was unloaded (which is working fine since yesterday), then 4 units were received from Einstein and they have been working and reporting themselves back to headquarters without a problem. However the SETI server does not seem to accept any news from my host and answers the following:
10/06/2005 13:08:45|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
10/06/2005 13:08:45|SETI@home|Requesting 0 seconds of work, returning 0 results
10/06/2005 13:09:37|SETI@home|Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi succeeded
And there it stays and nothing is received.
So finally I decided to restart project, and all data was erased (from SETI)but nothing else is happening. Any help would be appreciatted!

SETI is/was down, so you can't get new work. That's no problem with CC4.45.

I have 4.45 running on all of my tree hosts and it is working perfect for me. It respects my cache size and my resource share.

Lucky you!! I continue having problems and the main page from SETI says: June 9, 2005
We are back online after recovering from a file server crash and since then, today june 10th no units, no response, no nothing!

Continueing with my previous message, the 4.45 CC has now over 38 hours working and it continues not functioning for SETI. There are several people whom are complaining on the same subject. Maybe there still is some kind of bug going around.

For over 12 hours, host has not even tried to conect to SETI - Shall I just try to reinstall project?

However Einstein keeps working fine as well as Climate. (???) weird.

I think that I will have to go back to good old 4.25 where all projects worked fine and the loading/unloading of units was ok.
The new 4.45 has been running for the last 27 hours and the only units that has unloaded into the host are from Einstein and Climate. All the other projects remain at zero units downloaded, of course including SETI.

These are the last messages and since that hour (22:23:33) the host has not tried to reconnect with SETI.

Sorry gentlemen, but not being an informatic and not knowing where/what to move, touch, modify or whatever I think that I will have to move back to old 4.25, or just stay here at the 4.45 and wait until something newer comes out that does it by itself.

Well, I did download the thing, but not being an informatics myself, I wish you could tell me now what do I have to do.

Unzip the file into a directory. Run BOINCView.exe (you may want to consider setting up a short cut or two).

I did unzip the thing - then run BV.exe but not much of a help. Will just stay calm and let it go by itself.

Have got one unit from Climate, plus three from Einstein. One of this days might even get one from SETI, I do not want to go back to 4.25CC, so I'l just be patient!

I downloaded the 4.45 when I only had two units SETI, 1 Climate and " Einstein pending in my old 4.25CC. Of course all of this by having suspended work and existed, before downloading.

Much to my surprise, the climate unit that had a 57% advance, went all the way to finished (computer error)and was sent back to headquarters (He,he,he)the SETI units were finished and downloaded and the Einstein started working.

Now I only have 3 units of Einstein, finnally one that downloaded from climate and nothing else. I participate in the seven projects. BURP, Pitares, LHC, Protein, SETI, Climate and Einstein. Will not touch a thing, but the messages board says this to me:

09/06/2005 8:03:13|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
09/06/2005 8:03:13|SETI@home|Requesting 0 seconds of work, returning 0 results

09/06/2005 8:16:16|SETI@home|No schedulers responded
09/06/2005 8:16:17|BURP|Deferring communication with project for 6 hours, 6 minutes, and 49 seconds
09/06/2005 8:16:17|LHC@home|Deferring communication with project for 8 hours, 45 minutes, and 18 seconds
09/06/2005 8:16:17|Pirates@Home|Deferring communication with project for 3 days, 15 hours, 39 minutes, and 13 seconds
09/06/2005 8:16:17|ProteinPredictorAtHome|Deferring communication with project for 2 days, 14 hours, 39 minutes, and 14 seconds
09/06/2005 8:16:17|SETI@home|Deferring communication with project for 58 seconds

09/06/2005 8:17:16|SETI@home|Requesting 0 seconds of work, returning 0 results

How can it be that it says requesting 0 seconds of work, when I have no units in queue??

13) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC 4.43 multiproject scheduling problems (Message 120490)
Posted 8 Jun 2005 by Profile Liberto [Valencia]
Post:
This is a bug. I believe it to be fixed in 4.44. For the first few seconds when starting or restarting a WU the estimage in 4.43 is 0 seconds remaining - the scheduler then assumes that it desperately needs work from that project.

In 4.44, if the answer for the remaining work is don't know, then the scheduler assumes that the WU has the original estimated time left to process.

I hope it comes out soon as my messages show the following:

08/06/2005 8:02:54|SETI@home|Master file fetch failed
08/06/2005 8:02:54|SETI@home|Deferring communication with project for 4 days, 3 hours, 40 minutes, and 20 seconds

And is not obtaining any other units from any of the other projects.

Well Saenger - it just happens that both of us are wrong.

The solution is to go to the upper lip on your IE where it says see, then enter into codification and press the European occidental languaje and presto! everything goes OK

Just found out, it is our mistake - correct that and it is solved!!

Well Saenger - it just happens that you put your question with the title of spanish translation.

It seems that they are (at Berkeley) trying to put as much languajes as possible, but the problem is that there are many languajes that the English key board does not support the special markings.

Actually the way it looks in Spanish (while the effort is appreciated) is just awful!

Well Misfit I do know about Planet Quest, in fact our team has the official approval to be the translators of many of their articles for the Spanish speaking world! Actually several papers have been translated already.

You say: "The future PlanetQuest project will also partake in Astropulse. ...Thus you, the PlanetQuester, will be looking
for planets and extraterrestrial technology at the same time."

But it actually does not answer directly if they will do it separately or under the same units and project, which is the main issue of my question.

Respectfully answered.

In several other project's message boards, we have had the discussion about the return of Astropulse, which many of us are waiting for.

In reply, we have received some info as to the fact that it that ever happens, it will be by receiving the same units of Seti but with the astropulse name. Sorry, but that to me would be awfull!!

They say that the information from where you can obtain the AP data is fron the same units os SETI, put possibly with some new calculations of a future application. Others say that it would have to be made from the same equipment they have at Berkeley for SETI as there is not enough funds to cover for a duplication of separate projects.

Others even suggested to ask David Anderson about it... so, I just throw the question in here and give my own personal point of view:

I would like it to be two separate issues!!
And, do we know if Astropulse will ever get into the waiting crowd??

I leave this as on open question.

Regards to all from Valencia, Spain
