One last question we should have asked you before, are you using the screensaver or do you just have your Mac shut off the monitor?
Other than that I can't think of anything else offhand.

A good thought, actually … although I don’t see a lot of regularity in the timing of the problem in David’s logs, your question reminded me of the other Energy Saver setting: “Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for (time slider)”. This should definitely be set to “Never” when running BOINC, which (IME at least) doesn’t recover properly after the CPU has been sleeping.

I do use the BOINC screensaver and I have the energy saver set to "never" for sleep.

Well I completely deleted BOINC and all files associated with BOINC, including all files in Library/Application Support/BOINC Data. Installed the latest version of BOINC and started all over again. Progress wasa up to 17% when I checked an hour or so ago. When I checked just now, the progress was down to 3.65%. I have run out of options. BOINC is now doing nothing but using processing time and power to no end and I have no choice but to shut it down until yhere is some solution. The following is from the "Messages" log:

By the way, is there no way to report a problem to them? I have donated many 10s of thousands of computer hous to the project. How about a little help from the developers!

If they answered every request for help from the thousands of users out there, they would never get any of their own work done. There's only about five people in all trying to keep the servers running smoothly, analyze the science, do the paperwork, give speeches at the University, have a personal life, etc.

BOINC is open source, and many users in the community understand the workings of BOINC (or have even contributed to some of it's programming) and are just as good to help people along.

You shouldn't feel like you're getting second rate help just because one of the official developers aren't here responding to your questions. Some of the volunteers are very knowledgeable, and probably more so in some aspects of some things related to computers. That's why these boards were created: to allow users to help each other and to allow the community to grow on it's own, knowing they wouldn't have the manpower to do it all themselves.

Well I don't feel that way. I'm just frustrated that after many years of running SETI and racking up a good score that I now have to shut it down--at least until there is a solution to this problem. Yes, after looking at my progress a few minutes ago, the progress of the task above had shrunk to just over 1%. I had turned back on "Do work while computer is in use?" to "yes" under "your preferences/general". This obviously was NOT the problem. I wonder if doing a complete uninstall and then re-installing will help? Anyway I don't see an "uninstall" option on the BOINC installer. Thanks anyway!

That was it, thanks Keith!

The issue was when the app exits because of a loss of heartbeat, when BOINC tried to restart it, it must be trying to use the old PID. So the Mac comes back and says; "HUH... What are you talking about!"

Alinator

I don't understand why that should happen. I've been running BOINC for, what 2-3 years or whatever, and never had a problem before. Been running SETI At Home since it began. If there's a bad configuration for preferences, wouldn't the BOINC team be aware of it and warn us? By the way, is there no way to report a problem to them? I have donated many 10s of thousands of computer hous to the project. How about a little help from the developers!

"Leave applications in memory while suspended" IS set to "Yes".

Due to the repeated message "Suspending computation - user is active", is it possible you have set the "Do work while computer is in use?" to "no" under "your preferences/general"?
Keith

That's correct. I don't want my processing power going to BOINC when I'm doing things on my computer.

If you're absolutely sure it's the same WU (i.e. not an early finish/new start situation), then it sounds like a combination of two things: failure to write a checkpoint file to disk (or failure to read back a corrupted file), and something interrupting the current processing (either something benign like a switch to another project/preference for not working while computer in use, or something more worrying like an overheating CPU).

What does the message log say?[/quote]

Lots of "process not found" errors.
Any ideas?

The Seti application, and all other science apps, are set to run with lowest priority possible. Therefore check to see if something else is running that has higher priority.

I checked and you are running a mac, so I don't know how to do this. On a win c omputer I would suspect AV prog or similar.
If you don't I am sure somebody who does will come along soon.

Its not that the application is running slow, its that it has gone backwards in progress. I've been runnung SETI at home since it started. I know it shouldn't subtract from results. It doesn't make any sense to me.

When I looked at my latest SETI task a few hours ago, it was churning along at about 3% per hour, having finished about 7% of the task in over 5 hours. It just looked at the task and it is now at 1.9%, registering just over 4 hours. I have noticed this bizzare behavior for the last few days and am unable to complete any tasks. Anyone know what's going on here or what I can do to fix it? I have dumped the last fe tasks but the problem persists. Is this the only place to get any help or report a problem?

Now using BOINC, all of my "Classic" credits have disappeared. I had well over 30,000 hours of computer time, working toward my 3,000th unit. Now I've been put back to zero. I merged my account, like I though I was supposed to, so what's going on? It not fair.
