21) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : "Old "SETI setup? (Message 133645)

Unfortunately for you, Jake, the old (Classic) SETI is no longer available for downloading and will be closing down in the near future. Then, the only way to run SETI@home will be by using the BOINC version.

I agree the Seti BOINC graphics leave a lot to be desired. Even the Minimalist option still has that irritatingly revolving 3D chirping graphic.

........ However, it will not update my data units from old SETI, it doesn't show any graphics and it seems to be a lot slower than old SETI, assuming the data to be crunched is the same size.

Hello Bob. Your old SETI units will be updated once the project has been switched off. Till then you will only see results up to 15th March.

To get the graphics, open the BOINC Manager window and go to the 'Work' tab. Highlight the WU that's shown as running under 'Status' and click on 'Show graphics' on the left. The graphics will come up in a separate window. They will also now come up as a screensaver, even if you hide or close the window, so long as you can see the SETI project file shown as running in your Dock.

The new WUs are all different sizes and take different amounts of time to complete. Because of this, credits awarded for SETI Boinc vary for each unit processed.

Hope this helps!

Hello James. The website you were looking for has a new address:

http://seticlassic.ssl.berkeley.edu/index.html

The old address was pointed at the SETI Boinc website a little while ago in preparation for SETI Classic being phased out.

You can still run SETI Classic, with the results being sent in automatically as before, but not for much longer.

Seti BOINC is actually a lot easier to run now than when it started, as Mac users have at long last got a reasonably functioning version of BOINC Manager, which also lets users manage other BOINC projects besides SETI@home. When it started we had to venture into the realms of UNIX command lines and stuff, which I and a lot of others hadn't had to use before (except for fsck in single user mode when troubleshooting), so you've at least missed all that 'fun and games'!

This page http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ might be worth looking at for all the links for help in using BOINC for SETI and other projects.

Hope this helps and you will be able to continue with SETI.

I am not sure where 'Show graphics' is. My solution is similar: Start BOINC. Close it (without quitting).
The screensaver gives the "BOINC no longer in screensaver mode." Click/quit screensaver. seti@home_4.18_powerpc-apple-darwin is now in the Dock. Now screensaver will work ok.

Personally, I feel this is too much work every time you have to restart your computer. I wish they would fix it in a future (soon) release.

So, basically it's the same fix. You have to have seti@home_4.18_powerpc-apple-darwin showing in the dock to get the screensaver working and you have to do whatever you do each time you restart BOINC. Yes! It is a bit of a bind to have to do this every time.

'Show graphics' is in the panel on the left in BOINC Manager when you click the 'Work' tab. To 'show graphics', you have to highlight the work unit that's running.

I'm using BOINC Manager with SETI@home, now that it seems to be working properly with version 4.43.

I have one query: why does the toolbar Help dropdown menu give you an option for BOINC Manager Help (in addition to access to the BOINC Website), when clicking on that option or pressing F1 does not bring up anything on screen?

Is this something that will be added at a later date or is it a problem with the Mac Help program? I'm using Mac OSX 10.3.9.

I was getting the same problem sometimes and have found a fix by trial and error.

If you click on 'Show graphics', which gives you the graphics in a window and seti@home_4.18_powerpc-apple-darwin in the Dock, the screensaver will work fine.

You can then either close that window or hide it but leave the item shown in the dock running. If you quit it, even though Seti@home is still running as shown in the Boinc manager, the screensaver flashes and you get the "BOINC is no longer in screensaver mode" scrolling message.

This is how I've got it working. Hope it helps. Just don't ask me why!!!

The screen saver did not start for me until the next "work unit" on the list had begun.

I'm using BOINC Manager (the current version seems to work much better than the earlier versions I tried but abandoned!) and while the current work unit is shown as using setiathome 4.02, the next unit downloaded and waiting to run has setiathome 4.18 shown as its application, so I look forward to having a SET@home screensaver ready for when the Classic version is finally scrapped.

I would rather have a text/menu/dock item which shows me the present status (periodic update). This is easily gleaned from the data files, but I lack the knowledge or motivation to produce the item which will put it where I want it. For now I have a CLI alias which gives me the data I want.</blockquote>

Have you tried SETI Control? http://homepage.mac.com/delaneyrm/SETIControl.html

That gives you a progress percentage in its Dock logo and more detailed statistics in the program's window.

I've gone back to SETI Control almost as soon as trying out the BOINC menubar, which doesn't seem to be much help at all. You can at least control SETI with SETI Control, which I don't seem able to do with the Menubar!

I've taken a look at this and it seems a good idea if you're running more BOINC projects than just SETI but I think I'll stick with SETI Control:
http://homepage.mac.com/delaneyrm/SETIControl.html which does exactly what its name says and very well.

As my G4 only has a 450MHz processor, I don't think it is worth trying to spread its power to cover more than one project!

I'm also running the Classic SETI screensaver as such till it is wound up.

You could always use SETI Control and then you wouldn't have to use the command line at all. It also shows you the progress and statistics of your current work unit.

SETI Control can be found at: http://homepage.mac.com/delaneyrm/SETIControl.html

Hope this helps

SETI Control is a good interface for anyone not wanting to get involved with the command line. You can find it at:

It comes with full instructions for running SETI BOINC.

Hope this helps you, Rocky.

Similar here. I'm running SETI BOINC but still use SETI Classic as screensaver, there being no SETI BOINC screensaver yet available for Macs. I don't have thousands of results (as can be seen on my user details!) but mine have more than quadrupled since the May 'snapshot'.

It started doing this a few weeks back and just as I started building up a few more results again, all the older ones have disappeared, including one that was pending last time I looked (yesterday, I think). Really, if they want to make a bit of space perhaps results with credit could be left just a few more days so we can see when the last result for the work unit came in. Maybe if you crunch loads of WUs it doesn't matter but mine usually take a few days to process, so I don't check quite as often.

Thanks for that info, Keith. I'll wait till my next WU is uploaded or a new one downloaded (as I don't seem to have any left waiting to be processed) and see what happens! They take a few days each as my G4 isn't very powerful by current standards but the one that's processing at the moment is up to 92% according to SETI Control, so should go off later today.

........ New WU downloaded. WU uploaded Sunday marked as returned today in results. WU uploaded today still shown as not yet returned. Hmmm. There's a delay somewhere along the line!

My Mac uploaded a result on Sunday, which, if I look at my results page here, is still marked as 'in progress' and 'new', with a blank where the date received should be. Any ideas where it has disappeared to? Results are usually there when I take a look shortly after the upload.

There was a problem at first with uploading it, this being the last of seven unsuccessful attempts, all with the same error message

2004-11-28 15:03:29 [SETI@home] Couldn't start upload for http://setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/file_upload_handler: error -107

but it eventually uploaded OK

2004-11-28 15:19:09 [SETI@home] Started upload of 09ap04aa.18889.976.784672.136_0_0
2004-11-28 15:19:12 [SETI@home] Finished upload of 09ap04aa.18889.976.784672.136_0_0
2004-11-28 15:19:12 [SETI@home] Throughput 69625 bytes/sec

Has anyone else had a file that's been uploaded appear as not yet received in their results in the last few days (or other times for that matter!)?

Thanks

Yes, I looked at that and it's set at every 0.1 days, which is how it's always been. According to my log, the Mac just requests another WU when it is getting low on work.

Me too. I'm still running SETI Classic at the same time because of the screensaver, which currently doesn't exist for SETI BOINC on a Mac.

I generally seem to have just two work units at a time on the Mac, one being worked on and one waiting. Each time a finished one is uploaded, I get sent a new one. Don't ask me how this works out as I've not specified any preferences for this.

Thanks for this link. I was only looking in these 'Questions and Problems' boards and not the general ones but did find a similar thread to mine in the Windows board after I started it here.

Seems silly removing the results as soon as they're uploaded as you can't see how much credit you've got for them any more, unless you keep a note of the change each time it uploads, which is a bit inconvenient to have to do.
