I have a feeling that the multiplier for Multibeam was adjusted to give a 15-or-20 percent lower figure than previously a couple months or so ago. This was done probably to ensure fairness across the board. My machines used to turn out over 5,000 together; but now only 4300 or so. The few Einsteins that I had been doing recently don't explain that much drop. No complaint, though. Fairness is fairness.

I thought Tijuana was in México, not China. If Tijuana's so sacred, why is there so much fighting, etc, there? It's free, all right, free for fighting, drugs, corruption, etc.

Richards heat sink sure looks like hell! I don't see how it could ever cool efficiently with all that gunk on it. My old refrigerator was cutting out all the time until I cleaned its coils. The amount of dirt on those coils was practically nothing compared to the dirt on Richards heat sink.

I've noticed a hit to my Multibeam credits the past couple months or so and I don't think it's all due to doin' Einstein when MB credits are unavailable. I've been awfully busy doin' other projects lately and don't have the time to fool around with trying to install Astropulse applications, modifying their appinfo files, running into trouble, etc. I'd probably do AP provided it were just two or three mouse clicks away.

Seti hasn't found anything yet. No extraterrestrial civilizations. It may take may orders of magnitude more workunits to increase to a reasonable percentage the possibility of finding anything. We have to be pointed at the aliens, they have to be pointed at us, and both operating at the same time and frequency. And, the sensitivity must be very high. That takes a very narrow beam and bandwidth. Odds are awfully great.

Setiathome is just one part of Seti, and is just one program of the many that run as directed by BOINC.

Consumer Reports magazine for June says that the three separate programs "Avira Antivir Antivirus Personal" (free-av.com), Microsoft "Windows Defender" (microsoft.com/defender) and "Spamfighter Standard" (spamfighter.com/download.download.asp) is the best security combination now. Besides, it's FREE. One shortcoming, but a minor one, per "CR", is that e-mail is not scanned.

Things I don't like about buses: Most of the time they're almost empty, One has to get to the bus stop which might require a drive. Criminals have more opportunity to strike the commuter if he/she is waiting around for the bus, One has to be at the bus stop early, and it usually is out of his way, The bus is awfully damn slow and holds up traffic even if there's no one to pick up or let off, One has to catch a bus that arrives at work, etc, earlier than his car or else be late, the commuter often requires a transfer both ways necessitating another wait. I did take the bus to jury duty 11 years ago but I was right on the line and there was no transfer necessary. Parking near the courts was a disaster; thats why I took the bus starting the second day. I would ride my bike but it's too dangerous and I would get sweaty riding. Also it might rain or be icy on the way. Bikes and their lights often break down and one is more vulnerable to criminals on one. Thank God I don't work anymore. When I did work, it was just a 3/4-mile walk from my house. I sometimes saw Venus and the Moon enroute.

It looks like, in Dr Cetis bottom picture above, there are about 1,000 10-meter dishes (comparing them to the size of the truck which is not much closer than the nearest dish). In order to have a square kilometer of collecting area 12,732 10-meter dishes are required.

I'm making a guess only: Maybe with a bunch of dishes spread out as an interferometer that interferometer, even though it might have a total area less than that of one big dish, might be more sensitive over the tiny area on which it's focused (commensurate with its resolving power) than the big dish which is focused on a larger area commensurate with its resolving power.

I've noticed I've (and probably we've) had a lot of shorties lately. Maybe with the combination of the cutting-edge cores of today and shorties it would be possible to crunch 100 tasks per day per core, especially when figuring in the unevenness of flow of receiving tasks and sending results.

Five or ten years ago I was reading in "Sky and Telescope" and I saw something like this, written on a diagram dated about 1800 or so: 3h 16m 37s 22t 15f. In other words, back then, somewhere, they were apparently using "thirds" which (I guess) meant sixtieths of a second, and "fourths", which meant sixtieths of a third.

There's no guarantee that those flags on the moon are still "flying". For all I know the fabric of those flags might now just be "dust" or "ashes" lying in a line directly below where the fabric was hanging 36-40 years ago. All that sunlight, especially that unfiltered UV.

The Allen Array is awfully small, and will be, still, when it's finished. I don't see that it would do Seti a whole lot of good unless one waits until all dishes are up, they're fully stretched out (for best interferometry) and aimed, say, at a globular cluster or at known stars.
