Possibly - it is possible to leave a single computer attached, but with a very low resource share then BOINC will check back at fairly long intervals. Then when SETI reappears you should suddenly find a few tasks heading your way.

@Rob: Thanks for the idea. I was kind of hoping there might be a forum thread to subscribe to, a kind of sleeper cell that will activate when SETI awakes again.
I'm also wondering if my SETI stats will disappear if I detach. I guess I'll just have to try and see.

I also have been running this since the late 1990s. Over the years I lost a parent and grew from a young adult to a middle aged guy. It's been a part of my life for so long now it makes me wonder if one little but of information I processed all those years and all those computers found something unusual. I may never know. But, I won't forget and I still have my t-shirt for the 15th anniversary if I'm not mistaken.

@Todd: Me too, on much of what you write. But what is this t-shirt?? Never heard of one, and can't see any mention on the site.
Also, does anyone know: If I remove SETI@home from my BOINC projects in order to clear the last units from the task list -- which I am for sentimental reasons reluctant to do -- would that have any effect on my receiving notification if the project ever resumes?

Thanks, Zalster. I don't think standby and hibernate modes are part of this problem, though, as the computer wakes up fine from them (by hitting any key, or the power button, respectively). I neglected to mention that in my original post; wish I could edit it...

Dank, Jord, for the prompt reply and info! Hadn't thought of that. I wonder if it's my mouse drivers, though, as neither the mouse nor the keyboard will get me back into the session.

Post:
Hello all- I first posted this in the BOINC forum a few weeks ago. (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=12636)
As I've had no response there, I thought it might be better to post here:

This may be a Windows issue, but, as you can imagine, I can't get anywhere in the chaos of Windows user forums, nor did I get a response from Microsoft.
Beginning on a new machine at the beginning of July, once the screensaver is invoked, the only way I can resume my Windows session is to hit control-alt-delete, then hit "cancel" on the next screen (lock, etc/Task Manager screen). Simply hitting a key or moving the mouse will not bring the computer out of the screensaver mode. That does stop the SETI screensaver, but the BOINC standby one takes its place. (Please let me know if I could phrase that better and I will edit this post accordingly.)
This was not occurring on my previous machine, which croaked a week before I started using the new one. I presume the Windows build on the new machine was the same as on the old once it connected and updated itself, but I can't say for sure.
I have seen some threads on various forums describing similar behavior, but most or all seem to relate to some Windows photo (slide show?) screensaver function that I assume does not apply here as I have never used any such feature.
To the best of my knowledge, all my drivers are up to date.
Anyone have any ideas what this could be, or where I might look for an answer?
Thanks in advance.
Eric

Hello all, and thanks for posting about this issue. I reverted the "Creators" update several weeks ago upon learning it was the culprit. But after the latest forced update, I'm letting it stay. They've broken my spirit again.
Does anyone know if we'll be alerted if and when the problem is resolved?
Thanks in advance.

You do know that a screen saver is not necessary for BOINC to run,...?

Hi Jord-
Yes, so I'll just try it without the screensaver. But I still wonder what the issue is. BTW, seems I'm still not getting e-mails from the system even though it's set to notify me of posts. Thanks for your response.
Regected, are your lockups coinciding with the completion of a work unit? If so, I'd be curious to see what the developers think about this.

Hello Ageless- Sorry about my delayed response, I somehow had the e-mail alert shut off.
The graphics card is an ATI VisionTek X300 SE Hypermemory. Until I updated it today, it had a driver from August 2007. The problem occurred again yesterday at the end of a work unit, and I've suspended BOINC for the time being because of the inconvenience.

Sometimes the SETI@home screensaver freezes my screen. The monitor will display a motionless SETI screensaver graphic, and I cannot do anything on the computer that requires a visual interface. I have to shut the computer down using the keyboard. From what I can tell, the problem only occurs when the system has finished processing a work unit--that is, it seems the screensaver is always displaying 100% complete status when it hangs. As far as I know, the problem does not occur at the end of every work unit. Can anyone shed some light on why this might be happening? Thanks in advance.

I got an error while installing BOINC Manager 5.10.28 over 5.4.x. After I said OK to the message, the installation completed and reported having installed successfully, so I'm not sure if this is a problem.

The SETI forum search doesn't yield any posts on this issue, though a Google search finds a few mentions of it in the SETI forums. No discussions or solutions, however.

Anyone have an idea if this is something that needs attention? The error message is below:

12) Questions and Answers : Preferences : BOINC disregarding / overriding Windows XP screensaver and power settings (Message 296742)
Posted 5 May 2006 by Profile EHM-1
Post:
System: Windows XP sp2 on Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor.

With BOINC set as the screensaver, my computer never goes into standby, turns off hard disks, or hibernates; nor does it turn the monitor off; in spite of settings I've made in the display properties and power schemes dialogs telling it to do those things after specific periods of inactivity. After the designated 11 minutes of inactivity, BOINC starts and the computer sounds like it's "racing"--I assume that's the processor fan going full tilt. That continues until I interrupt it. This is not how BOINC behaved on my old system with the same settings. Anyone know how I can take control of the standby and power settings?

I have only one guess as to where the problem might lie:
I'm pretty sure BOINC is processing two data batches at a time, I assume because of the dual core processor. I noticed once that the screensaver was regularly alternating between two different progress views on an interval of several minutes. Is it possible that the alternation keeps the computer from ever standing by?

If it is installed as single or multi user, cd to the install directory, and run BOINC.exe. If it is now running, you are the victim of a bug that has hopefully been fixed in 5.1.

I have suddenly been unable to connect today, although had no problem yesterday. When I ran BOINC.exe and then started the Manager it worked. Does this mean I'm suffering from the bug you mentioned, or could there be another reason?

I am running 5.2.13 on XP.

Hello-
Did you solve this? The same problem just cropped up for me today out of the blue. If I close the command prompt window, BOINC loses its connection to localhost.

I believe that last week some of you guys determined that error 403 was an internet permissions issue error, but I saw no comment on it in the technical news either durning or after the outage. Does anyone know what is creating this error?

Hi all-
I think it might be that the work unit queue is backed up. See the March 27 technical news note on

15) Questions and Answers : Getting started : Converting/transfering Classic acct to BOINC acct (Message 260102)
Posted 10 Mar 2006 by Profile EHM-1
Post:

I have set up a new BOINC account, in addition to the one which was automatically set up for me in the old name, so I used "this form" above which appears to have a section for precisely what I want to do (i.e. associate the work from an old classic account with an existing BOINC account).

Hi Neil-
If I understand, you'd like to effectively merge two BOINC accounts into one to combine your SETI stats? Apparently, you can't, and that's by design. I'm not an authority at all here, but I think I discovered in my quest to do the same that they do not give us that capability because a few jerks tried to artificially inflate their stats that way. It's a drag, but as it's set up now, we pay for their actions. (If there were justice in this world, I'd be able to get my rank up from 177,333 to at least 177,332).

I tried that, but discovered that I don't remember the password for the classic account. So I got the account key for the classic account and changed the password; but that didn't help. I guess what I did was change the password on the automatically generated BOINC account in the same name as the classic account, without changing the classic account password. Is there any way I can get the genuine classic account password emailed out to me, as opposed to the account key for the BOINC replacment?
Thanks.
Neil

From my experience, I don't think you can get a password mailed to you, unless you can get someone at Seti@home to have mercy on you. I think that's difficult, as they are few and busy. If you still get e-mail at the classic account address, and you have the account key for that address, you should be able to do anything you want with that account (short of combining it with another).
