I have been looking around on eBay and found that older Xeon servers can be had surprisingly cheaply, although they all seem to be supplied without drives or caddies, would these make good crunchers or is it all about GPU's?

Would the type of hard drive used in a new SETI cruncher have much of an effect on results, or can I pretty much use any old drive?

My experience with Linux is very limited, but I am absolutely open to it if that is what will provide the best results. Can you recommend a Linux distro? How do I get the special cuda app?

I am considering building a new SETI cruncher from scratch in order to dramatically increase my processing power, but I have been out of the loop on PC hardware for a long time.

Are multiple GPU's now more important than CPU's with lots of core and threads?

How do I get the most credit/RAC Per $1/£1 Spent?

The sooner the UK escapes from Europe the better. They promised us a vote and we didn't get one, why won't they give us the vote they promised? Because they know they will lose by a huge margin - that is not democracy.

Good job Ireland, I salute you!

In the mean time can anybody help me out with a Canadian or US passport? :D

Edit: a New Zealand or Australian passport would be cool too!

I had 26,060 hours SETI@home classic CPU time and I don't think I ever visited the original SETI classic forums.

I have fantastic memories of it though, when I first started on SETI@Home a work unit took my machine around 60 hours to process. SETI became the reason to upgrade my PC and I no longer judged new components by how well they increased gaming performance, but on how many minutes they could shave off of my crunch times.

Everything I know about upgrading and overclocking PC's is due to this project.
