Meanwhile on another front Polish Defence Ministry confirms that Belarusian helicopters violated state border
I don't know if the military radar stations in Poland have already been modernized to NATO standards, integrated into NATO's regional Combined Air Operations Centre (Uedem, Germany). It's difficult to tell from photos taken from the ground if the Polish border has been crossed. These helicopters were MI-8 transport helicopters and a MI-24 attack helicopter. If such incidents happen repeatedly it may be instructive to switch on the detection radar of an anti-aircraft battery. It doesn't have to be the Turkish solution to airspace violations. But what is definitely wrong is watching and tolerating. I think the Poles will handle it just right.

And for another 'Ouch'!, that last attack on the Kerch bridge looks to have been somewhat more effective than Russia is willing to admit:

... Satellite Photos Reveal Railway Damage from Crimea Bridge Strike
wrote:
... show damage to railroad parts of the bridge. They also show a group of cars concentrated near those damaged parts, which researchers believe to be transport repair workers and equipment.

The Kerch Strait Bridge is a key supply route for Russia's forces and is Russia's sole land link with Crimea...

... and some 30 minutes later, between 3:20 a.m. to 3:40 a.m., a second explosion happened under the bridge's railway structure...

... While the visible portion of the railroad structure appears stable and is likely able to safely carry passenger cars, a source with knowledge of construction work at the Crimean bridge told Molfar that as one column has cracks, the movement of freight trains across the bridge is no longer possible...

... And the Logistics are the overriding factor to win any war...

Are Russians totally lost in an 'alternate' nightmare?...

The Russians hunting for cheap flats in occupied Mariupol
wrote:
It is one year since the Ukrainian city of Mariupol was largely destroyed by Russian forces and captured.

It is now being transformed and presented as a showcase for rule from Moscow - and some Russians are even hoping to buy homes there...

... About 90% of the city's buildings were damaged or destroyed by Russian shelling during a gruelling two-month siege. Thousands of civilians were killed and about 350,000 people left, out of the pre-war population of 430,000 ... Now, the occupation authorities seem intent on "Russifying" the city, changing Ukrainian-language road signs to Russian ones, introducing the Russian curriculum in schools...

... echo what millions of Russians have been hearing in Kremlin-controlled media over the past year. There's been a steady stream of glowing reports on state TV portraying the reconstruction of Mariupol as proceeding at a "record-breaking" pace and life returning to normal...

... He estimates that so far, only about 10% of homes damaged in the fighting have been restored. At the same time as new flats are going up, many blocks of flats have been pulled down, reportedly after being judged beyond restoration...

... "So they knock down a block of flats and now there's a just hole in the ground, no foundations are being laid down, nothing is being done,"...

... he believes flats are being given out "very sparingly and very selectively" to people who are "clearly of pro-Russian views"...

... The Russians we spoke to seem undeterred by the scale of destruction in the city or reported issues residents experience on the ground. "Ukraine destroyed the city of course," Vladimir says, ignoring the fact that it was Russia that invaded Ukraine, causing mass destruction. "Russia will raise the city up from the ground... and will be even better than it was as part of Ukraine,"...

... Oxana, from Tatarstan, a mother of several children who says she "always dreamt of living by the sea", expressed concern about the prospect of Ukrainians returning...

In Putin's choice of War, all the people are pawns to be played unto death...

Quite a contrast here?...

Anna Netrebko: Top Russian soprano fired over war sues Met Opera
wrote:
Russian opera singer Anna Netrebko is suing New York City's Metropolitan Opera, after she was dropped following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The internationally renowned soprano is suing the opera house and its manager for $360,000 in damages.

Ms Netrebko has previously supported President Vladimir Putin - but did condemn the invasion after pressure from the Met.

The opera has responded in a statement, saying the lawsuit had no merit...

... She did eventually accede to the demands to condemn the conflict - but stopped short of denouncing the Russian president and was dropped by the Met in all future performances a month after the invasion...

... She is also due to perform in Prague in October, but last month the city's deputy mayor urged the concert hall to cancel the show.

Jiri Pospisil said he had met with Ukrainian officials and said Ms Netrebko was on Ukraine's sanctions list...

Alexei Navalny: Russian opposition leader's jail term extended to 19 years
wrote:
Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has told supporters not to lose the will to resist, after his jail term was extended to 19 years...

... The charges are widely viewed as politically motivated.

The trial was held in a remote penal colony, where he has been since 2021.

The Kremlin's most vocal critic will serve his time in a "special regime colony", which Russian state prosecutors had been calling for. Even more restrictive than a high security colony, such prisons are normally reserved for dangerous criminals, re-offenders and those with life imprisonment. There he is likely to face greater isolation, with further restrictions on communications with the outside world. He could also receive fewer visitors than he is used to, including his family and defence team, and may face longer periods of solitary confinement...

... For this court case the phrase "behind closed doors" felt like an understatement. Alexei Navalny was tried in the high security prison in which he's currently incarcerated; the proceedings were closed to the press and the public...

... The new sentence "raises serious concerns about judicial harassment and instrumentalisation of the court system for political purposes in Russia," UN human rights chief Volker Turk said in a statement.

"Putin is trying to frighten as many Alexei supporters as he can"...

Different worlds?

I wonder if this displeases PooTin so much that he'll make it a target now as well.

In war against its Soviet past, Ukraine refaces towering Kyiv monument.

It actually looks much better now, but PooTin has more to worried about.

While PooTin continues to rain missiles and drones upon Ukrainian civilians his orcs are still slowly losing ground as video emerges of the Kerch Bridge strike.

New video shows Russia fail to stop a Ukrainian drone boat named 'Sea Baby' from blowing apart a key bridge with nearly 2,000 lbs of explosives.

And until Ukrainians can get proper air support why not give them something else in the meantime to better counter the orcs with?

PooTin's orcs might be the 2nd best army in Ukraine but they're certainly the best runners there.

21m:09s:
For every Muscovite who dies in the war, 87.5 people from Dagestan die, Russia's southernmost [islamic!] republic; 275 from Buryatia, and 350 from Tuva, home to an Asian minority and the poorest region of Russia.
This is different from the USSR's war in Afghanistan in the 1980s. At that time, conscripts from all over the Union died, as did many from Leningrad and Moscow. Sons of politicians, professors, factory directors died. Soviet society (that is: Soviet nomenklatura) was no longer willing to bear these sacrifices for the Afghanistan adventure; the authority of Breshnev's leadership was questioned. Putin studied this history lesson very carefully. That's why, unfortunately, one has to assess: The Russians really don't care how many of their soldiers die in Ukraine. They are mostly expendables, non-Russian ethnic minorities or "dirty peasants" from the South, from Siberia, from the Far East. Nobody cares. Censorship and propaganda suppress every tender voice that tries to protest. Unfortunately, this society, this entire state is so degenerate.

BBC - Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin 'on board' crashed Russian plane
Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the passenger list of a plane which crashed in Russia, killing all 10 on board.

He was believed to be on board the plane.

Earlier, a Wagner-linked Telegram channel Grey Zone reported that the jet was shot down by air defences in Tver region, north of Moscow.

Prigozhin led a failed mutiny against the Russian armed forces in June.
