Giant Lovell radio telescope at Jodrell Bank to become space light show

The UK's largest radio telescope - the Lovell telescope at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire - is being turned into a light and sound show.

For the first time since 2019, at the Bluedot festival, the giant radio telescope will take centre stage.

Images from space, including some stunning pictures from Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope will be beamed on to its 249ft (76m) dish.

"We'll use that dish as a huge film screen," said Prof Teresa Anderson...

... Prof Anderson and her husband, the physicist Prof Tim O'Brien from University of Manchester, co-founded the festival and have created an accompanying a soundtrack using recordings from space.

The show they developed for the Lovell telescope is called Sky's Eye View...

That is just one part of a fantastic fun festival there!

He said: "Whilst beavers create benefits society-wide, we recognise the impact of those are compounded on a few individuals, often land owners and those in charge of infrastructure. "Those impacts can be localised flooding, which can restrict access to land like farmland and losses of crops."

He added: "There are costs of managing beavers, but the benefits outweigh those costs."...

A little less greed for exploiting the land can go a long way to help everyone, including the greedy landowners themselves...

About the only positive news I've found in a while.

Now I reckon that this is good news, in fact I'd say that it's great news.

Queensland Land Court rules against Clive Palmer's Waratah Coal mine in landmark ruling.

The Queensland Land Court has ruled human rights would be unjustifiably limited by a proposal to dig the state's largest coal mine in the Galilee Basin in Central Queensland.

First Nations-led activist group Youth Verdict challenged an application by mining company Waratah Coal, owned by billionaire Clive Palmer.

The group of young Queensland activists challenged the mine on the basis it would impact the human rights of First Nations peoples by contributing to climate change.

The coal mine would remove about 40 million tonnes of coal a year for export to South-East Asia, with a forecast life span of 30 years.

It is the first time a group has successfully argued coal from a mine would impact human rights by contributing to climate change.

Queensland Land Court president Fleur Kingham said she would not be recommending Waratah Coal's application for a mining lease and environmental approval to be granted.

She told the court the mine unjustifiably limited the right to life, cultural rights of First Nations peoples, the rights of children, the rights to property, privacy and home and the right to enjoy human rights equally.

"The importance of preserving the rights weighs more heavily in the balance of the economic benefits of the mine and the benefits of contributing energy security for South-East Asia," she said....

Thanks for that one. Indeed very positive news to push back against the negativity of the greedy...

Renewable energy production hits new record in SA, as expert predicts more milestones to fall soon.

South Australia has been effectively powered by green energy for a week, with one expert predicting it could extend to a month by early next year.

From December 12 to 19, National Energy Market data showed wind and solar contributed on average 103.5 per cent towards the state's energy demand.

No coal was used during the period, but gas accounted for 5.9 per cent of electricity when renewable sources were not enough to power the state at points at night.

The state's connection to the national electricity grid saw it import three per cent of its net energy demand....

Blind BBC News correspondent Sean Dilley defeats mugger who stole his phone

The news correspondent took his opportunity when he sensed that his attacker was still next to him so jumped in that direction and managed to get them onto the ground.

He then restrained their arms and was able to retrieve his phone.

Dilley sustained several cuts and injured his elbow in the incident, which happened just before 0600 GMT. He said he was concerned about protecting himself but also wanted to ensure the person was as safe as possible.

He used a voice assistant on his phone to call 999. As he waited for the police, another person arrived and offered to help.

At that stage, with his assailant continuing to struggle, Dilley told them he would let them go as long as they left immediately...

I don't care what anyone else thinks, but I reckon that this is positive news.

Marrinawi Cove at Barangaroo opened to Sydney Harbour swimmers.

I lived amongst a group of creeks that fed into Toongabbie Creek which fed into the Parramatta River which fed into Sydney Harbour and back then you would want to even touch the water with all the polluting industries that use to occupy the banks and shores.

Certainly sounds like Good News if the water has been cleaned up from the polluted mess it used to be.
