Here in the UK, the vaccinations are only being done in large public venues, even cathedrals(!), or only in the larger medical centres. From what I've seen, that looks to be a very good idea to be able to safely get large numbers of people through, quickly, and with enough space to keep everything safe. Some are organized by the military to very good positive effect.
And that is all a good idea that appears to be well organized. OK, that may well mean you need to travel to 'foreign parts' away from your 'normal' territory.
Maybe so. Are you sure that comment encompasses the whole of the UK?
The satellite office that she was directed to go to, is just that & a small one at that.
As for "normal" territory, we live close to one edge of the city, & it is easier to travel into town where her main surgery is situated.
Before I took over the call, partner was told to get a taxi.
Psst, Martin, I thought you said you were down my way some time ago?
Did you forget I am in the UK?

Unfortunately, scam callers have pretty much made cold calling poisonous. You can't rely on the caller-id not being spoofed either. Perhaps the only reliable way is for your doctors to send a message for you to call them back on a known number and confirm a security phrase that they sent you with their callback request. However, that secured procedure will be beyond some people to follow...

Before, and after having the jab I had a number of scam callers, various give-aways like expecting one to pay, call not coming from the UK, not using my mobile phone.
Then a couple of letters arrived and I went onto the NHS website, booked both first and second jabs at the same time. Headed off at the allotted hour and everything went very smoothly.

For some good positive results:

Covid vaccines - 'spectacular' impact on serious illness
wrote:
The first data on the UK Covid vaccine rollout suggests it is having a "spectacular" impact on stopping serious illness, researchers say.

Within weeks, one shot reduces the risk of being admitted to hospital by at least three-quarters for the over 80s. Researchers said this was particularly impressive as this age group was the most frail and least likely to have a strong immune response. Monitoring of health staff also shows vaccination helps cut transmission.

So far a third of adults have received a vaccination in the UK...

Hopefully we don't get a renewed wave due to vaccinated people becoming less cautious and less safe with their actions...

Our vaccine rollout started yesterday and once front line workers (1A) and nursing/retirement home residents (1B) are done it'll be time for the rest of us old farts down under to get it.

Now that most of the weekend's numbers are in at the last reporting period saw the world's total case tally pass 112.2 million while deaths passed 2,484,800. :-(

Now for the latest in the case list, New Zealand is down in 174th while Vietnam is in 173rd and it looks like Australia will keep 111th for a little bit longer.

Mozambique nudged Afghanistan from 97th, Ghana and Sri Lanka both passed Uzbekistan to take up 88th and 89th places respectively while Albania kicked North Macedonia out of 82nd long with passing 100,000 cases, Paraguay removed Nigeria from 72nd as Kazakhstan slipped past Denmark to claim 57th, Ecuador took 47th from Nepal, Hungary became the 38th country to pass 400,000 infections along with Israel blowing Belgium out of 26th and Chile became the 23rd country to pass 800,000 cases while passing Portugal, Indonesia replaced Peru in 18th and India (2nd place) finally passed 11 million cases, but it is good to see that the daily numbers have dropped dramatically.

Anyhow that's it until the next update.

Earlier, Mr Hancock said he wanted measures to become a "matter of personal responsibility and social norms" that could see people choosing to wear masks on public transport.
Prof Sir John Bell, regius chair of medicine at Oxford University, told BBC Radio 4's World at One he thought, and hoped, the country would get back to the stage where people did not wear masks, with Covid "operating in the background" like flu.
Sadly, still too many stuck in rose tinted ivory towers

India coronavirus: 240 new COVID strains found as cases suddenly surge.

Authorities are particularly concerned about what is happening in Maharashtra, a state in the western peninsular region, where cases have suddenly surged.

Dr Shashank Joshi, a member of Maharashtra’s COVID Task Force, told Indian media that experts have detected 240 new strains of the virus across India in the recent surge.

He believes some of the new strains may be more infectious and could be a reason for the sudden increase in cases.

What a farce.
Amazing, get a letter from the NHS about booking an appointment for both doses.
Okay, no problem, let's try it.
NHS number - check
D.O.B. - Check
Answer various questions regarding flu jabs - check
Enter postcode for nearest Vac centre - check
Up crops a list of 30.
Now the fun starts
The nearest is 28 miles away & in tier 3 (I'm in tier 4)
The furthest is 60 miles away.

Funny thing though is a report today....
She says there are so many complex factors at play. "If you haven't got a car or you are in ill health, it may not be easy to get to a vaccination centre. We can't assume it is because people do not want to be vaccinated - it may be about access.
Report

So much for lockdown.

Yes... For the transport practicalities...

I was under the impression that the travel restrictions are relaxed for the 'essential' such as medical or vaccination?

Interestingly, the advice from my medical centre is to travel by taxi...

Again, all a game of numbers and practicalities. The big centralized vaccination centres are a good idea for logistics and safety at those big centres. However, they also require a large circle of people to travel into that centre (from hopefully not too far afield)...

Just an example, HOW many "new" medical centres built between the 28 mile Vac centre & the 60 mile one?
I know of 6 within 5 miles of my location - not small dinky little surgeries but large centres.
No matter how you attempt to spin it...
... it's a total farce.

It looks as if the local medical centres, and the national mass vaccination centres, aren't hooked up to the same booking list.

The local medical centre (~2 miles away) got to me before the national call-up (by about 12 hours). So I had my first jab done at the medical centre. For giggles, I've just tried to book my booster through the national website.

As soon as I'd identified myself (nhs number and d.o.b. - not even a name, which saves typing with a long name like mine!), I got the firm retort:

You are not currently eligible to book through this service
If you’ve already had your first dose of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine at a GP surgery or hospital, contact them to book the second dose of the vaccine.
So it seems it's "either / or". The national service probably doesn't even know where the medical centres are, and I doubt my GP has bothered to find out where the national centres are. Once you've chosen your channel of communication (phone or website), you're marshalled down the appropriate pathway.

And for deep food for thought:

Covid: Thousands sign petition against vaccine passports

All a question of for who's liberty?

Freedoms regardless? Or insist upon the freedom to not be recklessly infected?

The joker amongst all that are the scary proportion of ignorant and fearful... How can we safely and 'reasonably' work around those?

Why are politicians so bad at lateral thinking?

There are "deep and complex issues" with using vaccine passports or certificates to prove someone's Covid "status", Boris Johnson has said.

Announcing a review of the proposal, he said using certificates to allow visits to venues such as pubs and theatres was a "novelty for our country".
Completely untrue - at least as far as pubs are concerned.

British pubs are age-limited - no access if you're under 18 (except children accompanying parents or other adults). There have been many "Proof of age" certification schemes over the years - and the kids can't wait to qualify for them.

I'm a lot further from 'first legal drink' than Boris is, and I can remember them - why can't he?

Borris may be thinking of a certificate authority for validity checks. None presently exists. Many places may never implement one. Most would never share with others.

We use one today without a ability to verify, the yellow card we need with the passport when we travel to berry berry land. There is no way to verify the authenticity of the doctors signature on the card that a specific vax has actually been given.

I can see it now, an international database of every person and their medical history. What a rich target for state security services to hack.

Well it must be time for another update on the state of things in this COVID world.

By the end of the last reporting period the world's total case tally had passed 113.9 million while deaths passed 2,528,500. :-(

While there has been no changes to the top 30 of the death list there's been a few changes to the case list so I'll get on to those changes.

Uruguay flew over Luxembourg, Uruguay, Afghanistan and Norway (in that order) to land in 98th spot, Estonia jumped over El Salvador and Singapore to claim 94th while Paraguay took 71st from Ethiopia, Moldova removed Egypt from 64th as Kuwait replaced Slovenia in 61st, Bulgaria kicked Croatia out of 51st and the U.A.E. along with Jordan passed Saudi Arabia to take up 39th and 40th respectively.

Meanwhile full approval of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has now been given here in Australia by our Therapeutic Goods Administration and the first 3.8 million doses should arrive here next week from the U.K. which will then be compared to those being produced in Melbourne by CSL Limited (formally known as the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories) under license before being rolled out across regional areas of down under and most of Oceania (except for French and U.S. jurisdictions AFAIK). Even though that vaccine has been manufactured here for some time now those doses can't be used until those 3.8 million O.S. doses arrive here under the terms of the license. Already about half of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine doses that have arrived here so far have been injected to the arms of aged-care and disability staff, border protection and quarantine workers as well as those residing in aged-cared facilities in major centers around the country where the -71C storage required is available. The phase 3 clinical trial of the Novavax vaccine is also nearing completion here and full approval of it is expected by late next month. Because of our control of the COVID-19 outbreak here no emergency approvals for use of any vaccines have been given or have been necessary.

I Confronted an Anti-Vaxxer. It Didn't Go Well

... And the comments do not go well either! (Hence no link, sorry.)

Some of the more telling comments are:

... people will catch corona, blame a doctor for the "hoax", then die not believing they got the virus.

When stupidity is considered patriotism, it is unsafe to be intelligent. - Isaac Asimov

"I'm not stupid."
Well, there's your problem. Dunning-Kruger and all that. They are incapable of admitting to being wrong.

"Never argue with stupid people. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience." -- Mark Twain --

Currently, America's deadliest enemy is not Covid-19: it's ignorance.

There's no logic gene in these people, therefore you cannot reason with them.

... I have highly educated American friends who are definitely not crazy and certainly not ignorant and who were Trump supporters. High end economic and business people for whom the GOP policies were an asset to the US economy and looked beyond the pathetic blustering of a 'no brainer' president. This does not excuse him as a disgrace to American history however, exposes the deplorable nature of an entitled American society, ME, MONEY and MORE!

bottom line is ~ you can't fix stupid or trump cult members

In the words of the great philosopher Forrest Gump, "Stupid is what stupid does."

Pro-vax crowd act like cult members, too.

There’s an old saying which applies to people like Amie here : You should never try to teach a pig to sing, because it wastes your time, and it annoys the pig...

Anti-vaxxer: 'Let's make natural selection great again!'

It‘s like playing chess with a pigeon: she will move chess pieces out of turn, make funny noises, defecate all over the board and then claim victory. Sad.

What makes them even more dangerous is that not only are they rejecting vaccines for themselves, they're taking action to try and withhold them from everyone else.

Just like the “rigged” election. “We have proof.....we have proof....” which never materialised.

It's VERY disturbing how many people are falling prey to these pathetic and dangerous conspiracy theories.
"...I don't trust anyone". Except for anything she reads on facebook.

Want to bet that if Amy ever does reply with a “Proof”, it will be an article from Star magazine, or the Sun, or maybe the Enquirer. I mean these people actually believe the things Tucker Carlson says, so...

"The madman sees more devils than all hell could hold." - Shakespeare

... engaging with these people only gives them a platform to spread disinformation. When conspiracy theory is so deeply entrenched, no amount of explanation will be accepted.

I have had countless of those conversation, and it never changes anything. They'll just keep throwing more and more things in your face that they have absolutely no proof of, claiming that all of it is true and proven.

Stupid means you cannot learn... ignorant means you have not bothered to learn or refuse to learn... most of these people are willfully ignorant

... The producers of conspiracy content are literally making lots of money from spinning often dangerous, fantasy stories, and lying to their followers. That’s the primary reason they’re doing it, and continue doing it — it’s profitable. Conspiracy theory propaganda producers are sociopaths — unethical, morally bankrupt con artists, who are exploiting and using the naive, uneducated, easily led, anti-intellectuals in our society, to make money off of their ignorance.

Anyone following conspiracy nonsense is just being used as a “meal-ticket” by sick, amoral people profiteering off deceiving their believers. For conspiracist tricksters, it’s a job and a lucrative business. So, please wake up folks they’re ... using you to line their pockets. Don’t reward the sociopaths who are potentially putting your lives in jeopardy...

Amie is an example of a gullible skeptic. Skeptical for all the wrong reasons. Suspicious of everything and everyone except for the people peddling the conspiracy theories.

... Otherwise known as a "denialist". A skeptic doubts things that lack evidence. A denialist doubts things that are well-evidenced.

The best way to deal with such entrenched belief is to do what Joe Biden an the Democrats are doing, get on with leading and show by example and actual results that the vaccine works, that's the best way to end a conspiracy, show that it's false.

Phew!

Stay safe folks!
