WASHINGTON, Dec 20 (Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N) won backing from Congress early on Tuesday to lift a looming deadline imposing a new safety standard for modern cockpit alerts for two new versions of the U.S. planemaker's best-selling 737 MAX aircraft.

Some aviation unions had warned Congress in recent days that a failure to lift the deadline could threaten the new planes and cost jobs, while families of those killed in the two crashes and "Miracle on the Hudson" pilot Sully Sullenberger were among those opposed to it.

The space agency announced Wednesday that it’s partnering with Boeing to create a new airliner to further advance sustainability within the industry. The duo will build a full-scale demonstrator aircraft aimed at lowering emissions and increasing fuel efficiency. It is expected to hit the skies in the late 2020s.

The Transonic Truss-Braced Wing concept will be fitted with long, thin wings that will be stabilized by diagonal struts. This sleek silhouette is made to create less drag; thus the airliner will burn less fuel than those currently in the skies. In addition, the craft will feature the most advanced propulsion systems and materials. NASA claims the new green technologies could lower the vessel’s fuel consumption and emission output by up to 30 percent compared to today’s most efficient single-aisle aircraft.

The hope is that this one demonstrator jet will inspire a new generation of environmentally friendly commercial planes. The existing airliners, such as the Boeing 737 or the Airbus A320, collectively account for nearly half of worldwide aviation emissions. In short, creating greener commercial fleets will result in cleaner skies. It will also help the US to achieve net-zero carbon emissions from aviation by 2050, one of the environmental goals outlined in the White House’s US Aviation Climate Action Plan.

Over seven years, NASA will invest $425 million in the project. Boeing and other industry partners will cover the rest of the funding (approximately $725 million). NASA will also provide access to its aeronautics facilities.

Aircraft giant Boeing will answer a fraud charge in court later over two plane crashes which killed 346 people.

Both accidents were down to flaws in the flight control systems on the 737 Max aircraft.

Boeing was found to have failed to disclose information about the system but avoided a trial by agreeing to pay $2.5bn (£1.8bn) in fines and compensation.

Relatives of those who died are trying to reopen the settlement.

It means that for the first time, the company will be formally charged in court in relation to the two crashes, and will have to plead guilty or not guilty...

... In January 2021, the US Department of Justice (DoJ) charged Boeing with fraud. But the company was able to avoid going on trial, by agreeing to pay $2.5bn in fines and compensation, and promising to tighten up its compliance procedures.

This settlement - known as a deferred prosecution agreement - provoked intense anger among a number of the relatives of those who died aboard ET302. They claimed, and continue to claim, that the deal was a "sweetheart agreement" which was concluded without their knowledge, violated their rights, and allowed the company to avoid being held fully accountable...

Does not that second document in effect have Boeing admit that Boeing Directors/employees acted deadly fraudulently?

Feb 24 (Reuters) - Shares of Boeing Co (BA.N) fell 3.9% on Friday after the U.S. planemaker temporarily halted deliveries of its 787 Dreamliner jets over a documentation issue related to a fuselage component.

Boeing, while reviewing certification records, on Thursday said it "discovered an analysis error by our supplier related to the 787 forward pressure bulkhead," leading to a pause in deliveries months after they were allowed to resume in August.

The planemaker said the error was found while working through the process to "extend" the operating timeline for a key part.

The current issue is unrelated to a previous quality problem involving gaps around the forward pressure bulkhead that was discovered by the FAA in 2021 and contributed to the delivery stoppage.
