Hi everybody,

my server is not that busy. So why not run some seti-stuff. But I don't get it, how to do it. Is there any how to install it on the commandline in the web? Is it a good idea at all to use this old server for seti?

what operating system?

do you have any GPUs in that? or just the CPUs? SETI wont care about all that memory or the storage drives.

If Windows, just download the BOINC package and attach SETI.
If Linux, use your package manager to install boinc-client and boinc-manager.

Thank you for answering.

It is Ubuntu Server 18.04.3 LTS

No GPU, just Intel Xeon with 16 CPUs @2.27GHZ

I installed boinc via "apt-get install boinc". Is that the client or the manager?

Edit
Or is it senseless without GPU?

The lack of a GPU will have no impact on installing BOINC - you just need the correct incantations.
The "apt family" of commands are the ones you need - I think (I've not got my notes with me) that apt-get just collects the named application from its source - the one you may need is apt-install which I think does both the get and install.
There are two bits to BOINC the manager and the client, I'm not sure if you need them both on a headless, x-less system - again my notes aren't with me.

apt and apt-get are actually 2 different package managers. apt is the newer preferred package manager to use, but Ubuntu has left apt-get in there for those who want it. I assume that eventually it will go away. They are mostly the same thing, but apt has more features.

But he did run the apt-get install command, so he’s good to go.

You just need to run the boinc command to get started. You’ll need to run the commands to attach your project, and you’ll want to get familiar with boinccmd to make use of the different options that would normally be available in the BOINC manager GUI.

This is a good starting point.
