The agency concerned insists it won't compromise privacy. The scan is the work of the United Kingdom's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). It says its looking for zero-day vulnerabilities, meaning security holes that hackers are actively exploiting before a fix is available. The NCSC says it will regularly scan all Internet connected devices based in the UK. It doesn't intend to access any data on devices but instead simply make a connection request. The scanning software will then log any response, plus the date, time and IP address. The main aim of the scan is to build up a picture of any software version details included in the response. . . . Musk suddenly backflips on ‘war’ threat to Apple. But the E.U. does have a beef. The EU has warned Elon Musk of astronomical fines or a potential ban if Twitter doesn’t follow Europe’s new rules. Musk pledged to put a computer chip in his skull as he announced that Neuralink is “ready for use in humans”. ...The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) called out the company for causing “extreme suffering” for its test subjects. A statement put to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), claims monkeys “had their brains mutilated in shoddy experiments and were left to suffer and die”. The PCRM claims Neuralink’s testing, conducted in partnership with the University of California between 2017 and 2020, caused “extreme psychological distress” for the test animals who were subject to “crude surgeries”. According to the animal rights organisation, as many as a dozen deaths have been caused by the trials. The group also alleges that other monkeys suffered severe side effects including bloody skin infections and brain haemorrhages after having Neuralink devices implanted in their heads. A mom who went to see the famed Rockettes perform at New York's Radio City Music Hall with her daughter and the child's Girl Scout troop was kicked out when facial recognition technology flagged her as being blacklisted. Kelly Conlon, a New Jersey attorney, was booted from the theater last month and didn't get to see the Christmas Spectacular show. Signage inside Radio City Music Hall alerts patrons that the venue uses "a variety of security measures; including Facial Recognition which uses Biometric Identifier Information." Chinese state-aligned actors are using AI-generated deepfake news broadcasters to peddle pro-China propaganda videos for social media platforms, a new research report claims. The fake anchors – for a fictitious news outlet called Wolf News – were created by artificial intelligence software and appeared in footage on social media that seemed to promote the interests of the Chinese Communist Party, US-based research firm Graphika said in its report. "This is the first time we've seen a state-aligned operation use AI-generated video footage of a fictitious person to create deceptive political content," Jack Stubbs, vice president of intelligence at Graphika, told AFP. In one video analysed by Graphika, a fictitious male anchor who calls himself Alex critiques US inaction over gun violence plaguing the country. In the second, a female anchor stresses the importance of "great power cooperation" between China and the United States. Advancements in AI have stoked global alarm over the technology's potential for disinformation and misuse, with deepfake images created out of thin air and people shown mouthing things they never said. Last year, Facebook owner Meta said it took down a deepfake video of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urging citizens to lay down their weapons and surrender to Russia....
