Amazon reported a federal income tax rebate for the past two years totalling almost $270m.If it paid no tax, how did it manage such a rebate? |

BTW: The USA's workers historically relocate to better paying jobs and futures.A bit off topic but perhaps to South Carolina and working for Volvo or BMW? Bummer... Volvo is scaling back plans for its new assembly plant just outside Charleston, South Carolina, as a result of the trade war triggered by President Donald Trump.Perhaps a reason to not relocate for many American workers. |

In Amazon bringing many direct and indirect jobs and having Government Revenue exceeding Subsides by 9 times? If they can afford it no problem, but I don't think New York can, just look at subway problems. Most of the employee's would not have been from New York. And even with an average salary of $150k they wouldn't have been able to afford house prices in Queens, they've gone up 50% since 2012. Hence the subway comment. The beliefs of the NY State/City Socialist's and Left has not hurt Amazon. Their beliefs have only hurt their people and increased government revenue. What revenue, haven't you been taking notice, Amazon hire the better accountants that NY or the Federal government. They don't pay taxes. BTW: The USA's workers historically relocate to better paying jobs and futures. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/moving-for-work-getting-increasingly-rare/ Most recently, understand all the new Automobile Plants in our South and why Detroit almost became a ghost town. Losing less that 3,000 people/year, that's probably just the youngsters going off to college and not coming back. |

Most of that decline was in the 1970's and 80's, when it was measured in 100's of thousands/decade, recently since 2000 in under a 2000/year on average (<20k/decade). Is that your only comment to my answers. |

In http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=83912&postid=1981821#1981821 I made four comments, go and read it carefully. You only answered one. To the question "Where did the workers go?" I don't know, and it is a fair possibility no one else knows in detail, but probably all over the country. |

Where did the workers go?Actually you cannot compare car manufacturing plants with Amazon HQ2 that is of course not a warehouse and manufacturing goods division but an R&D and a Cloud management and manufacturing software division. Very different type of workers between the two. If you look at the qualifications needed that an applicant for a job at Amazon HQ2 must have, you will notice that is nothing that will create new jobs in NYC or DC. Perhaps a few. Amazon have formal requirements like experience in very nisched technologies. And informal also "How old are you?" in general and if female "Are you single?" And a couple some more ... Ah. All these gullibilly local politicians that try to bring prosperity to a region and fail... |

The first of the car manufacturing plants opened in the south happened years in the 90's or later. Therefore at least ten years after the major decline of Detroit's population. [edit] The new plants that opened before those in the south were in Ohio and Indiana, these are not in the South, they are next door to Detroit. [/edit] P.S. This thread is about Amazon in NY |

Two plants opened in the south in the 80's, my bad, but these were quite small, they have since had massive expansions, The Toyota plant is now about 10 times bigger than the original assembly only plant. Honda Alabama 2001 Toyota Kentucky 1988 Nissan Tennessee 1983 Nissan Mississippi 2001 VW Tennessee 2011 Hyundia Alabama 2005 BMW South Carolina 1994 Mercedes Alabama 1997 Mazda 2021 hopefully but its going to build a Toyota |

But wasn't it the Unions that caused some of the problems in Detroit. They objected to change and obtained wages which were way above the rate for the workers skill levels in other industries doing similar engineering jobs. |

But wasn't it the Unions that caused some of the problems in Detroit. Only if the unions are not corrupt. |
