Gihan Kamel, an Egyptian biophysicist, is the only woman in the scientific staff of Sesame, the synchrotron light source in Amman, an international cooperation in Jordan, whose scientific director is the Italian Roberto Paolucci. Iranian, Egyptian, Cyprus, Arab, Palestinian and Israeli scientists cooperate in the center, which is called the CERN of the Middle East. One of its founders was Sergio Fubini from Torino University.
