In Louisiana, a father, a son and a culture of police abuse
MONROE, La. (AP) — Growing up in the piney backwoods of northern Louisiana, where yards were dotted with crosses and the occasional Confederate flag, Jacob Brown was raised on hunting, fishing and dreams of becoming a state trooper.

But within weeks of arriving at the Louisiana State Police training academy in Baton Rouge, instructors pegged Brown as trouble. One wrote that he was an arrogant, chronic rule breaker with “toxic” character traits that should disqualify him from ever joining the state’s elite law enforcement agency.

Fortunately for Brown, the state police was known as a place where who you knew often trumped what you did, and where most introductory chats eventually got around to a simple question: Who’s your daddy?

Jacob Brown is the son of Bob Brown, then part of the state police’s top brass who would rise to second in command despite being reprimanded years earlier for calling Black colleagues the n-word and hanging a Confederate flag in his office. And the son would not only become a “legacy hire” but prove his instructors prophetic by becoming one of the most violent troopers in the state, reserving most of his punches, flashlight strikes and kicks for the Black drivers he pulled over along the soybean and cotton fields near where he grew up.

The force confirmed the sexual offence charge pertained to a period that pre-dated his employment with them.
So no vetting then

I'd hate to think that someone with an active arrest warrant could be hired.

It just had to happen sooner or later. :-(

Two Pennsylvania police officers were fired for submitting fake COVID-19 vaccination cards to their department.

Officers Heather Schaeffer and Benjamin Lapp of the Lancaster City Bureau of Police were terminated "following a Bureau of Police internal investigation into the use and submission of false records related to the City's COVID-19 reporting protocols," the bureau said in a statement.

Officer Schaeffer obtained a blank vaccine card from a family member, made a copy of it, and sold it to Officer Lapp for $20, Lancaster Online's Dan Nephin reported. Lancaster Online obtained records of the incident through a public records request.

Cops by day, drug runners by night.

Drug sting sends two Miami-Dade cop pals to prison.

Then there's a group of Louisiana State coppers that have been caught out.

New autopsy rejects crash theory in Ronald Greene death.

A reexamined autopsy ordered by the FBI in the deadly 2019 arrest of Ronald Greene has rejected the Louisiana State Police claim that a car crash caused his fatal injuries, narrowing prosecutors’ focus on the troopers seen on body camera video beating, stunning and dragging the Black motorist.

This post would have fitted nicely in the "Don't know" thread in the Cafe.
Then this is seen:
Ten coins were found by a serving police officer who tried to sell them and was jailed for 16 months.
So much for the law, right?
Especially when one sees this:
Four gold objects were discovered with 131 coins in a field in west Norfolk, most by the same anonymous metal detectorist who notified the appropriate authorities.

Solicitors do due diligence , shame the government doesn't!
The government body does not use any fraud detection systems to cross reference the identities on applications, and currently employs no trained fraud investigators.
Unbelievable
Oh look, ITMA.
You & Yours also approached the Secretary of State for Justice Dominic Raab for comment.

Want to know why HGV drivers are leaving the industry in the UK?
Here's a clue...
He said: ‘The policeman said if you are getting a lift with another driver to a destination, it has to be within an hour. Anything over an hour and you have to put your digicard in because it’s classed as a double-manned drive.
‘I have never heard of this ruling and neither has my workmate, who has been driving for 30 years.
...farcical
Bovine excrement is just getting worse.

Snicker. On this side of the pond H&W teams are a thing. Now I suppose while one is sleeping in the rig they would have to be on the clock!

Nope. Operation is on a 24 hour clock. Tacho ends when driving/work stops.
As for double manning in the UK...
A vehicle is considered to be double-manned if, at any driving period, in between two daily or a daily and weekly rest period, the vehicle has two drivers on board (who are able to drive and have a tachograph card).
Have had to quote that to many DVSA (VOSA ]several times in the past when stopped & had a driver's mate in the cab. Depending on load/area, thhat fact determines whether or not I take 1 or 2 tacho breaks.
Would have loved to come up against muppets like that idiot in blue.

Well, it sure sounded like - copper said - if you were in the other seat, no matter if you were asleep, timed out, or anything else, you had to be on the Tacho, er log. Now have your statement with more detail.

Now how that could effect a H&W team is hours related, one gets the required rest, wakes up hops in the other seat, but the other hasn't timed out yet and will keep driving until they do. USA is big, could be a few day drive coast to coast. Keep the load moving for as many of those 24 hours as possible.

That's where the UK differ from the U.S.
Double manning rules in the UK.
Maximum no of hours that can be worked is 18 in any one day but, as seen in the 1st quote, that can be extended to 20.
Also, when double manning, Driving/work must start & end same day & at the same base.
The drivers' hours rules puts a daily limit of 9 hours of driving between daily/weekly rest periods. The daily limit can however be increased to a maximum of 10 hours driving in a day but only twice in any one week.

Now there is the issue that confuses both drivers & "some" police officers & all because of the EU's WTD(Working Time Directive).
How many 15 hour shifts can a HGV driver do?
A HGV driver can get no less than nine hours' daily rest within a 24-hour period up to three times in a week. This means that drivers can work three 15-hour days within the space of a week.
One thing I am grateful for is technology. :-)
Before coming off the road, always had an up to date copy of drivers hour & tacho regs (pdf's) on smartphone.
Had one incident where it was pointed out to a copper his info was wrong. Wasn't happy so proceeded to spend 40 minutes scrutinising our vehicle.
Didn't find any issues & wished us a safe trip. My retort didn't go down very well.
"Thanks for the extra overtime"( on a roadside stop, not allowed to put tacho on break). :-)

Posted about this guy previously.
Well done Harry.
Got many a thought on this but don't want the "thought police" on my back. :-)
Harry wins again
Love the response from the "old bill".

If you can't tell your left from your right then you shouldn't be a cop.

Another cop who thinks that he's above it all.

Growing calls for Hennepin County Sheriff Hutchinson to resign.

Five of the seven county commissioners have called for him to step down.

A growing number of elected officials and others have called on Sheriff David Hutchinson to resign following his drunken-driving conviction and allegations he lied to first responders.

In recent days, five of the seven Hennepin County commissioners have joined the list of those asking Hutchinson to quit. And the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training, which oversees police officer licensing, is now investigating Hutchinson's drunk driving conviction.

However, the sheriff has reportedly said he won't be forced out by his critics. He was elected in 2019.

Hutchinson admitted to drinking before he rolled his county-owned SUV on Dec. 8 in Alexandria. He had attended a Minnesota Sheriff's Association conference the night before. His blood-alcohol content was 0.13 and he pleaded guilty to fourth-degree DWI last month.

But recently, more has come out about the moments after the crash, including that Hutchinson denied being behind the wheel — he even said that a cab driver was behind the wheel, the Minnesota Reformer reported.....
