Citizen scientists encouraged to contribute photos to uncover mysterious new cicadas

Cicada expert Nathan Emery said there were about 800 cicada species we know about, but that number could easily be higher if people get behind a project to photograph the species they see.
"That number could top 1,000 if we could survey more remote, arid regions in Australia," Dr Emery said. "We only have 400 scientifically-described, so there's a lot we don't know."

At first glance, it looks like a rain cloud.

But in reality, the massive blob showing up Tuesday evening on the National Weather Service’s radar in San Diego County was just a lot of ladybugs.

This is a new bug for me. I found it dying in my house, no doubt a victim of abuse by the cats. If any of you want to try to identify it, feel free. I live in central Texas (west of Waco). I have submitted pix to a Facebook group of entymologists. I dug through pix on a couple of websites but had no luck. I suspect it is some sort of fly.

This year's marina pet spiders are doing well, despite the "best endevours" of the marina's assistant manager...

I finally saw a sight I wasn’t expecting. It was a wasp that had stung a spider almost as big as it. The wasp was dragging the spider somewhere.

Edit: looked at some pictures and decided it might be a Orange and Black Spider Wasp.

Super tough spider silk could be due to a newly discovered protein.
It can be strong like steel, yet stretchy like rubber. It's lightweight but can be phenomenally tough.
We're not talking about the latest high-tech material developed in a lab somewhere, but one of nature's supermaterials — spider silk.

Spiders make many different kinds of silks.
Orb-weaver spiders, which spin the wheel-shaped, spirally webs we're so familiar with, can produce seven types of silk that are used in different parts of their webs. Now a team of US researchers is starting to figure out why silk produced by one orb-weaver species — Darwin's bark spider (Caerostris darwini) — is so tough.
"This spider is famous because it's been shown that one of the silk types that it makes, called dragline silk, is the toughest spider silk that's ever been measured," said evolutionary biologist Jessica Garb of the University of Massachusetts Lowell and lead author of the study.

I have black wasps that fly around my house all the time. I wondered about them until, several years ago, I saw one get caught in a spider's web. I was sad for the wasp until I saw the spider run up to claim its prize and the wasp stung it and carried it away. Wow! Now that I think about it, I was so mesmerized by the sight that I don't think I was ever sad for the spider.
