R2D -1 prototype :)

To me it looks like an overhead projector but the wheels tell me it is only meant to traverse in a linear direction. (Video or photography effects.)

You agreed it was a shop item. Was that shop as in a workshop (mechanical stuff or surgical) or a place to buy apples?

Is it something to do with scanning or 3d or looking for faults?

Guess it’s time to summarize the hints.

You don’t need to turn them on or off any more but in the past they would kill your battery if you left them on.
They illuminate your way
The tool is used in an auto shop
Deer tend to stare at them
They come in seal beam, Halogen, Xenon and LED
Someone’s camper van must have misaligned ones
Beam is a significant word
Many need them to see where they are heading
I hope this helps align all of the divergent clues into a single focused direction.

Thanks Carlos, I use to do it but we didn't have anything like that tool. just lines on the wall for different cars was all.
