It's not just the salaries, is it. A lot of coast guards also get subsidised rents, if these are not paid then they could get evicted. And don't forget the US Coastguard also operates overseas, some foreigners might not be so forgiving if the rent is late.

BTW: I am glad I am not one of those Federal Employees living paycheck to paycheck during the many Shutdowns over the decades.
Geez.
Are the US Federal Employees employed by the president?
To me it sounds like Autocracy!
Surely there are amendments to the US Constitution that your forefathers have foreseen this.
Or?

BTW: Does the Swedish News Media put this Partial Shutdown in the context of our many other past Shutdown's?
Actually our media does explain a lot of what happening in US politicals.
For instance an election in the US is covered more than an election over here.
But I guess right now our media wonder what the heck is going on over there.
Governmental shutdowns doesn't happen here.
But then again we have even a problem to get a new government.
Yes. Since the election in September we still have not a new government!

The fact is Trump is doing this on purpose and any compromise will not please him or his base.

The mid term elections nationally went democrat, one one of their planks was not to waste money on the wall. That's democracy for ya. The people donn't want to pay for the wall, Trump does. Who should prevail?

The Democrats in the Senate are also responsible for not funding a bill that the Majority Republicans wished to pass. A 60 vote is usually required in the Senate.

Both sides need to compromise and not just play to their base.

Both Trump and the Minority in the Senate Democrat's “non-starter" are the problem.

Both accusing the other is just an example of our Partisan Politics.

Do Republicans on the hill support the wall?

Sep 20, 2017

President Trump has been adamant that he needs Congress to approve funding to start building his border wall, but Republicans on Capitol Hill are far less adamant about supporting it. When asked by the USA TODAY Network whether they support the president’s initial $1.6 billion budget request to begin construction, only 69 of the 292 Republicans on Capitol Hill said "yes." Among the rest, three Republicans said they oppose the money, several evaded a direct answer, and the rest simply refused to respond to the question.

Do Republicans on the hill support the wall?

Dec. 21, 2018

House Republicans approve bill to fund border wall, setting up a final showdown in the Senate.

I bet they only did that so they can say to Trump "We supported you" knowing full well the Democrats were going to carry the bill.

Dec. 21, 2018

Majority Republicans in Senate, needing 60 votes, cannot overcome an anticipated Minority Democrat filibuster.

Partisan politics and playing to their base is the same for both sides.

Why anyone believes the jabbering of politicians is a question which I have no answer.

The people spoke in the midterms.

Compromise by both sides will be more imperative. But I do not see either the Democrat's or Trump compromising.
The thing is Clyde that the Dem's and the Rep's have approved the bill to avoid the shutdown (refer to 1 of my early posts), but Trump owns this shutdown and has vetoed it.

That is until the Dem's takeover the house, from what I hear (and understand), from more informed sources here (by those who understand its corrupt ways over there) that veto can then be overturned?

But when does that happen?

No veto can't be overturned. GOPers still will have the Senate and many GOPers votes would be required in the Senate to overturn. However it was the Senate that passed a no wall bill nearly unanimous so that may not matter.
Over in the House, the GOPers "freedom caucus" demands a wall and would never vote to overturn the veto. Even though there will be a democrat majority in the house, there will not be a democrat super-majority 2/3 needed to overturn, so some GOPers would be needed. "freedom caucus" will do everything it can to ensure slavery of the American people and force GOPers, who aren't in the caucus, to vote no.

Much nastier would be for the House (where all spending bills should start) to pass a wall funder linked with creating new tax brackets with increasing rates, say $1M, $5M, $10M, $25M, $50M, $100M ... each going up by 10% until they get to a 90% tax rate. Call it the Rump wall and funding for the Rump wall bill. Let Rump veto that, but Rump won't sign Norquist! so it might work.

<ed>However there never was a veto. House and Senate never agreed on a bill so none was sent to Rump to either sign or veto.

Speak of the devil:)
Trump dominated Swedish media in 2018 - more so than PM Löfven
https://www.svt.se/kultur/medier/trump-dominerade-svenska-medier-2018-mer-omtalad-an-lofven
The interest in Donald Trump overshadowed everything else in Swedish media in 2018. During the year, the American president was more covered than Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and Moderate leader Ulf Kristersson together.
In total, Donald Trump was mentioned in more than 165,000 articles or news items during the year, according to a survey that TT ordered from the media analysis company Retriever. Even last year, Trump was the most covered person in Swedish media. Despite the fact that just over 60,000 fewer articles have been written about him this year, he tops the list by a good margin.
- It's a little odd. One might have thought that Swedish politics, with the election year and the subsequent government crisis, should have had a greater attention to the Swedish party leaders. But the US is one of the great powers in the world and he has a great news value, says Marie Grusell, media researcher at the University of Gothenburg.
Trump's advantage probably has several reasons, she says. Not least play his twittering role.
- He is so different, he stands out, which makes the story of him easier to angle. He awakens our curiosity as much as he awakens our dismay. You don't know how to relate to him, should you laugh or cry? It goes against our entire way of looking at politics, says Marie Grusell.

They did not. The Republican controlled House of Representatives, lead by the "House Freedom Caucus" forced its rejection. Bill was never sent to POTUS. All this because of loud mouth conservative radio hosts.

President and Mrs. Obama built/has a ten foot Wall around their D.C. mansion/compound. I agree, totally necessary for their safety and security. The U.S. needs the same thing, slightly larger version!

December 21, 2018: House passes stopgap funding bill with $5 billion for Trump's border wall, at odds with Senate.

WASHINGTON — The House [Republicans] passed a stopgap measure Thursday night to fund the government that includes $5 billion for a border wall sought by President Donald Trump. The bill is expected to be rejected in the Senate, and does little to prevent a shutdown on Saturday.

Dec. 19, 2018

WASHINGTON — Moving to head off a looming government shutdown, the Senate passed a stopgap spending bill on Wednesday night that would keep the government funded through Feb. 8 — and would punt the impasse over a southern border wall to the new year and a divided Congress.

The bill, which quickly passed by voice vote after senators were corralled back to the chambers, was expected to pass the House on Thursday and be sent to President Trump before the midnight Friday deadline, when funding would lapse for nine federal departments.

House Freedom Caucus blocked it and shut the government down! Get your facts straight.
