An area larger than Perth torched by out-of-control bushfire in WA.

Kimberley Regional Duty Coordinator Ben Mueller said the fire was caused by lightning on October 11 and has since grown to burn more than 870,000 hectares.
"To put that in perspective, if you were to drive around that it would be 880 kilometres," he said.

Due to the size and location of the fire, workers had to drive more than two hours from Broome every day or use helicopters to get to the emergency zone.
"It's one hour to fly the length of the fire — the distances are quite big," Mr Mueller said.

Up here in the north, this is actually the main fire season. Once the wet season kicks in, the grass grows like crazy, and no fires.

However, the big problem is down south (eastern & southern Australia- southern Queensland, all of New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia & southern Western Australia- there has been little winter rain, and already there have been several large fires, with many homes destroyed. We expect that in Summer, not in Winter! Once Summer kicks in, it's looking like it's going to be an extreme to catastrophic fire danger for much of the fire season (in areas where it's usually only very high with a few days of extreme). Even areas that usually only have moderate to high fire danger are looking at high to extreme fire danger levels. And the long term forecast- lower than average rainfall, higher than average minimums & maximum temperatures.
Down there, it really is looking extremely bad. It has the potential to be the worst fire season on record (hopefully that won't eventuate, but it's looking more & more likely).

Another Ooops!

Emergency services were called to the scene at Woodlands Street, Strathmore, about 3:00pm when the 33-tonne crane was being loaded onto a semi-trailer at the end of the day.
The impact from the boom caused significant damage, leaving a large hole in the roof and rendering the home unsafe for the occupants, an elderly couple, who were inside at the time.
They were shocked but unhurt, fire officials said.

Free limbs have saved estimated $6.5m

When engineer Mat Bowtell was retrenched from his car manufacturing job with Toyota in October, his life took on a very different path.
He splurged his redundancy payout on 3D printers and set up shop in his "man cave" on Phillip Island, 150 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, designing and making cheap prosthetic limbs.

The Victorian Local Hero Award recipient said he had sent prosthetics all around the world and recently sent a new hand to a girl in Iraq.
He lets children choose their own colours and designs, and said making the limbs for free was incredibly rewarding.
"It's very emotional to see someone receive their hand for the first time," he said.
Mr Bowtell said his designs had been downloaded more than 1,000 times, saving people an estimated $6.5 million.

"It can cost $15,000-plus for a commercial prosthetic and kids grow out of them so quickly," he said.
"I don't charge for what I make, I don't even charge for the postage, and the way I'm able to do that is through crowdfunding.
"I think as a society we need to look after people who are disadvantaged or have disabilities or limb difference."

Not personally, but it's a recognised issue in some parts of the UK. Our public health people have a dedicated website:

The biggest Radon-risk area within any building is any below ground level "room". Indeed in some parts of the UK it is a requirement that cellars, even "half-cellars" and rooms built into slopes, are tanked against Radon infiltration and have to have "correct ventilation" installed. My brother had to consider this when he did a minor alteration to his house on the edge of Exmoor.

My house has a basement I use like the rest of the house, so I think if it has radon levels above what is considered healthy, I probably should do something about it. I also have CO detectors, and they show Zero, so that is good.

Once I went skiing in Badgastein, Austria, where there were abandoned uranium mines. A brochure in the hotel offered the opportunity to enter the mine tunnels to take a radon bath, which was considered healthy.

A radon bath? Ha, lovely. That reminds me of the resort an hour or so north of me, called French Lick and West Baden Springs. They have an underground spring that is rich in sulphur and is supposed to be good for you. It is affectionately called Pluto water.
