TUBERCULOSIS REMAINS the world’s most lethal infectious killer. It claims more lives than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. TB is also a preventable, treatable, curable disease. Clearly there is an enormous gap here. World leaders are expected to address this chasm at the United Nations next week , and they must do more than give speeches. They need to act. Tuberculosis is curable. So why are so many people still dying of the disease? |

TB was really bad here in my city, Louisville, Kentucky, back in the first half of the 20th Century. This is the sanatorium where people went to get help: https://www.therealwaverlyhills.com/about ![]() |

Didn't they learn anything and why didn't they take extra precautions? Not in this day of Laissez-faire as promoted by the Trump administration and Republican congress. |

Authorities in Uganda are on high alert after the Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday confirmed a case of Ebola on its border with Uganda. The new infection is almost 200 km (125 miles) away from the nearest other known case in Congo’s current Ebola outbreak, which is believed to have killed 97 people since July and infected another 46 in North Kivu and Ituri provinces. http://www.africanews.com/2018/09/22/uganda-on-high-alert-as-ebola-case-confirmed-at-border-with-drc/ |

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Raw sewage flows freely in some streets of Zimbabwe's capital, posing a deadly challenge to the recently elected president who has promised the troubled country a new dawn. A cholera outbreak has killed more than 30 people and sickened more than 7,000 as it spreads beyond Harare, posing the latest crisis for a government that pledges, somehow, to turn a collapsed economy into a middle-class one by 2030. https://www.sfchronicle.com/news/medical/article/Raw-sewage-in-streets-Cholera-is-Zimbabwe-s-13249610.php |

Ebola prevention activities have been suspended in the Democratic Republic of Congo city of Beni after a deadly rebel attack. Treatment centres will stay open but vaccinations and the tracing of people who have been in contact with suspected Ebola patients have stopped for now. One hundred people have died in the current outbreak in the east of the country, the health ministry says. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-45625735 |

The fight against Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a “perfect storm†that could help an outbreak spin out of control, the World Health Organization warned Tuesday. The storm’s main ingredient: insecurity brought on by war. The outbreak response is based in North Kivu, a conflict zone that borders Rwanda and Uganda. More than a million people are displaced there, and armed opposition groups have been carrying out deadly attacks on civilians. The conflict even forced the WHO to halt its response in one Ebola epicenter for a week. https://www.vox.com/2018/9/25/17903092/drc-ebola-outbreak-war-kivu |

In late August, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the latest Ebola outbreak in North Kivu and Ituri provinces has yet to stabilize, with 90 people dead and at least 130 probable or confirmed cases. In Zimbabwe, the government recently declared a cholera emergency in the capital, Harare, after at least 20 people died and 2,000 fell ill. The response to these and other public health crises in Africa points to the need for action by multiple authorities. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2018/09/27/ebola-is-back-is-africa-ready/?utm_term=.1a1aeec78732 |

Tuberculosis is the ninth leading cause of death worldwide, and though the World Health Organization has said the average global burden of disease is on the decline, some areas of the world continue to feel its impact. Researchers at the University of Georgia have received a $2.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to understand the local epidemiology of TB in African urban settings and help these communities develop targeted interventions to reduce transmission. http://www.onlineathens.com/news/20180929/uga-physician-tracks-tuberculosis-usi |

It’s officially fall in the US, which means it’s time for cozy sweaters, pumpkin-flavored everything, and...your seasonal influenza vaccine. Given that last year's flu season was one of the deadliest in the last 40 years — an estimated 80,000 people died, including 180 children — it's important to get a flu shot as soon as possible. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone who is 6 months or older get vaccinated by the end of October. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/carolinekee/the-flu-shot-2018-questions-faq |

DAKAR, Senegal -- The international community is sounding new alarm after three Red Cross workers were attacked while trying to contain the latest deadly Ebola outbreak in Congo. The U.N. Security Council has called for an immediate end to hostilities as it leaves for a Congo visit Thursday. Human Rights Watch urges an investigation into massacres that have killed well over 200 civilians this year in and around Beni, where health workers' Ebola efforts are based. https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/red-cross-workers-attacked-while-working-on-congo-ebola-outbreak-1.4121158 |

A puzzling condition that causes partial paralysis in children is back on the uptick in parts of the U.S., with six cases under investigation in Minnesota and 14 reported in Colorado, health officials said Monday. The children have acute flaccid myelitis or AFM, a weakening of the nerves that resembles polio. It was first identified in 2014, when 120 children were diagnosed. So far this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there have been 38 confirmed cases of the polio-like condition across 16 states. Rare, polio-like condition appears in U.S. again Welcome Gary |

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is expected to last another three to four months and could spread at any time to Uganda or Rwanda, the World Health Organization (WHO) said. The WHO said on Thursday that the neighbouring countries are well prepared but have not yet approved the use of a vaccine. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2018/10/ebola-spread-uganda-rwanda-warns-181011141950957.html |

Acute flaccid myelitis affects the body's nervous system, specifically the spinal cord, and can cause paralysis. Symptoms also include sudden limb weakness, loss of muscle tone and reflexes, facial and eyelid drooping, facial weakness, difficulty moving the eyes, swallowing difficulty, or slurred speech, according to the CDC. A rare “polio-like†illness is suspected in the sickness of dozens of children nationwide. |
