This is the Isle of Wight, about 20 years behind the mainland.

Do they still cut the " webbing" in the yoakel hospital or is it a ferry ride to Portsmouth nowadays ??

As to terrorist, the local Womens Institute would be horrified at the suggestion (probably a UK joke)

Here we don't have local post offices anymore!

We have post offices all over town. There are three just within a couple miles of my house.

As far as cash goes, back around the turn of the century I worked at a bank, and it never ceased to amaze me how the retirees would load their purses up with almost their whole Social Security check cashed, and walk out the door.

Cash is King.
It happens that your bank card can be broken.
It happens that your bank card is stolen.
It happens that your bank card are not accepted in readers.
It happens that your bank card information is hacked.

Cash however.
Just grab them from your pocket.

Credit cards, and debit cards used as credit cards, have limits of liability and will refund fraudulent charges to you. When cash is stolen, it's just gone. I usually carry little of it. I do almost everything with my credit card that earns Amtrak reward points, and I pay it off every month. When I do need cash, I look over the ATM* for skimmers first, but other than that I don't worry about proximity readers.

*One of my banks has a feature where you initiate an ATM withdrawal on their smart phone app. When you get to the machine, you just touch the spot on the screen that says "Mobile cash" and it displays a QR code. You scan the code with your phone and in a few seconds the box spits out your cash. You don't even need to have your card with you, so it can't get skimmed. You also don't have to remember your PIN (but you do have to remember the password for the app).

My bank app let me enter my fingerprint on my phone. Don't need the card or a password.

BEWARE: Police get dead man's finger 3D-printed to unlock his phone... Are fingerprints private?

07.21.16
Michigan State University professor Anil Jain's work focuses on how to make biometric signifiers like facial recognition as difficult to hack into as possible. But when police approached him to break into someone's phone, they didn't want backdoor access around security measures — they wanted him to 3D-print a dead man's finger to get into his smartphone.

According to Fusion, the ongoing investigation prevented Jain from sharing specific details, but the digest version is that the police suspect foul play and the dead man's phone might provide clues to his suspected killer. Since the police happened to have taken his fingerprints when he was alive (he'd been previously arrested), they gave them to Jain to make 3D-printed versions of all ten digits.

Every month I get a mail apparently from Telecomitalia, my ISP provider, saying that my monthly bill is enclosed in a zipped file. Unfortunately the mail says that "il fattura" (bill) is enclosed. But "fattura" is feminine in Italian, so the mail should say "la fattura". Of course I delete it without opening the zipped file, which probably contains a virus.

The ridiculous phony Microsoft calls have stopped here, but someone called the other day to tell me our Tv Guide subscription was up for renewal. They're really getting desperate.

I never answer calls/numbers not know to my "personal directory".

Used to get the Microsoft only on my cell phone some years back.

The IRS calls tend to go thru "peak tax time" cycles - mostly January through April but they do call all year around hoping to snag some unwitting victims.

I had an "ADT ALARM SYSTEM" telescammer call the land line just about every day using a different number each time. Only the last 4 digit changed during the "cycle" then they went back to the top of the "list" after about 3 weeks but always kept the CALLER-ID name the same on each call. In all they used 24 numbers.

I kept adding the numbers to the NomoRobo list until they were all blocked. Even after getting the one ring / not in service message from NomoRobo they continued to call here.

After about 3 months of the calls I finally contacted the local Police Dept and made out a phone harassment report detailing the date, time and number(s) calling. The calls finally stopped about a week later.

I'd like it confirmed by a lawyer, but I was told the police can't force you to enter a password to unlock a phone, but they can force you to use your fingerprint to unlock it.

IIRC that is what the ACLU says, however with our current prez SCOTUS could change.

If the guy was dead, he had no reason to fear criminal prosecution.

In the US, The U.S. Supreme Court has held that police can search phones with a valid warrant and compel a person in custody to provide physical evidence such as fingerprints without a judge's permission. But that requires a warrant. They cannot force you to do it without one.
As for use of a dead man's finger. Well if I am dead, I really don't care if they check my phone.

I guess if one scam scare IRS call doesn't do it, 3 calls in a row will panic you. Different but similar caller ID's on each, but the same callback number, different than the last one.
