IF you won the lottery and never had to worry about money ever again, what would your first SETI machine, that you buy, look like?

I'd stuff 8 Intel Xeon E7-8890 v4 s on a motherboard (each has 48 logical cores) and on top of that, I'd stuff a terabyte of memory and oh, maybe I'd go with 4 1080Tis, or maybe 4 Pascal Titans...or maybe Professional-level cards, although I guess they're not so useful with single-precision. Then I would dominate the "Top Computers" list for the next few years. :)

I wouldn't want to go TOO crazy and set up an entire complex for SETI crunching or anything, just one, SERIOUSLY bad-ass system that rules all other systems. I'm not an unreasonable person. I would build the most epic gaming system that the world has ever seen, too and that would, of course, crunch SETI when I'm not gaming, but it wouldn't be my mission to be #2 on the Top Computers list with that one.

What about you? What's your ideal SETI cruncher if money was no object?

If money were NO object? Don't I wish.

I'd build a new house with a separate computing annex that would house a Cray supercomputer.
If I ran Seti out of work, I could sell computing time to other Boinc or scientific projects.

And of course, kitty rescues throughout the country would be great benefactors.
As well as the Seti project itself.

I don't build machines strictly with SETI in mind, so even if I won the lottery, the system wouldn't be specifically geared for SETI@home. That being said, as a tech enthusiast and hobbyist, I would absolutely over-spec a machine with ridiculous horsepower for my personal use. I'd use it for gaming and for video ripping/compressing, but when I'm not using it SETI would get to use the full power of the system.

I would also update/modernize my server farm in the basement because I love building and maintaining infrastructure. And if money were no issue, SETI would be able to use those machines too.

Ok I'll bite, if I won, what would I do?

1. Find someone to give this 2 bedroom 2 bath single wide mobile home to, and then move out.
2. Buy a 3 bedroom 2 bath double wide mobile home, that is already on its own land(no rent of HOA), refurbish it, and go solar.
3. Get My 4 PCs running and upgraded(4-512GB SSD's, 12-1080 Hybrid cards with 2000rpm fans, get a case for the 4th PC), I know of a place that could do the work.
4. Fix My car the rest of the way, then give it to My nephew as a belated XMAS gift.
5. Get a newer used 2011-2015 Mustang GT coupe.
6. Buy a freezer for extra capacity.
7. Get the Aquarium running, with tropical fish(fresh water).
8. Find a way to buy 3 earthquake aquarium supports from Japan, since they can't be bought here in the US due to the company being swamped by demand in Japan.
9. Adopt a male kitty, for Grace.

On the original question, I agree with OzzFan.

Expanding to what I would do overall, in the short term I would get my bathroom remodeled with proper professional mold remediation. Nothing fancy, just clean and safe.

Next, I would design a new house around the model railroad that would run through every room. There would also be a room for computers, which would run Seti and Einstein when not doing other things. Then I would hire a few people to bring me all the things in my current house and do with them whatever I decide; a lot would be trashed, but I need to decide.

10. Go under the knife and get rid of some excess cargo I'm carrying around.
11. Buy a Kawasaki Ninja 1000, in
LIME Green.(They come in Black or Green, Green is more visible.)
12. Buy a Mountain type Bicycle, at least 10 speeds.
(some roads here are made of dirt)
That should be Gouda enough.

If I won the lottery it would be a miracle or theft because I don't do it, but if I did and it wasn't, I would set up a trust to fund SETI itself, and meet its needs - equipment and staffing - and surpass them hopefully for a long long time to come. That's one thing I would do. :)

And I'd set up a sort of hardship fund to provide help to setizens struggling with stuff - so as to make up for all the times I 've not been able to help :

And there would be a lot of donations to charities that work in areas that are close to my heart. And there would be my family and friends, to take worries away from.

If there was still enough left - then I would buy all the properties owned by my landlord, and I would give them to the sitting tenants - with a fund to call on for repairs etc.

I really don't need much for myself at all :) it's all you lot that are expensive :) but worth it ...

edit: there was a nut when there should have been a but

oh...and did we say we like humans too? Well we do :)

I've played the UK lottery twice, and "won" twice. Each time was because a syndicate was one short of its normal number. Each time the syndicate won, once it worked out at just over a £1 profit, and the other just under £2 profit. I decided to quit while ahead.

I'd better keep quiet then seeing as I've been winning quite a lot since Nov 94.

If I ever get the big one, Seti will get a lovely Xmas present :-)

If I ever won...............
The kitties and shelters in this country would see the biggest undertaking of kitty welfare ever undertaken.
So far, the kitties have not won. But they are playing.

I have high hopes...............as do all other lottery players.
Wish us luck.
