I saw the new movie this afternoon.

I trust it's not a spoiler to anyone that the Enterprise is destroyed in orbit of a planet deep in a nebula. Other than that, the plot has almost nothing in common with ST III: TSFS.

My only beef with the reboots is that things are happening much earlier in the crew's lives than in the TOS movies.

While the movies are good to watch. I never liked how they changed history of the TOS.
To me its just an alternate universe. And that was done in TOS and in Deep Space Nine.
I'm not a fan of the total makeover of the star trek universe.
Why didn't they just go a bit farther into the future?
I'm not impressed at all with the way Paramount has gone.

That's exactly right. They explained it in the first movie that this entire reboot is an alternate Universe concept so they can start with a clean slate with familiar characters.

I agree. It seems Hollyweird is afraid to try new things and would rather go with the familiar and comfortable. Then again, they only give the masses what they want (what sells well), and I see a lot of people out there lately that are scared and fearful of an unknown future and simply want the comfort of the familiar.

If they used none of the names or ship designs and did not call it Star Trek. how well would these movies do? And did anybody hear the sound effect that sounded like the pod racers from The Phantom Menace???

I thought making it an alternate universe with a tie-back to the known universe was a clever way of allowing themselves to do whatever the hell they wanted and be different than the original without incurring the wrath of the nitpickers (like me) who would point out every little inconsistency.

I also think this is the best of the three so far.

The way they worked the death of Nimoy into the plot was nice; it could easily have been overdone. OTOH, the story would have been just fine without it. (It just occurred to me: at one point, Spock calls McCoy Leonard. That is the doctor's name, but I still wonder if it also served as another tribute, perhaps Zachary's personal one.)

And for all the hoopla over Sulu being gay and Takei's objection to it, it was also handled very well: by not making it a big deal at all.

Well the last Star Trek TV show sucked big time. The one after Voyager went off the air. The First U.S.S. Enterprise. That show had promise, But they went to soap opera mode. I for one got sick of the weekly xindee or what ever the hell they were called crisis. I'm pretty sure that show killed whatever chance another show has of being syndicated.
Its to bad also. I thought Next Generation and Deep Space Nine were very well done shows. I also think Voyager was 3 years two long.

I just got back from the ST con in Las Vegas. I saw the premiere of ST:Beyond in San Diego. To me the Star Trek universe has a set of cultures and tech and characters that were started and built on for many years that I (and many other fans) can relate to. Some series and movies I like better than others. At the con there are rabid fans for each of the series, for instance, and I don't always share their enthusiasm. In part it may be which series they were first introduced to Star Trek. Because of the common culture and tech and characters the alternate space-time of the new movies works for me. I think that ST:Beyond is getting into the Star Trek culture in a way that most fans like, enjoy, and are excited about.

I am a fan of many other science fiction franchises and I like others, such as Star Gate, Red Dwarf and Doctor Who and others. Fans have preferences and we don't have to like all the different franchises.

That's a very good point. In my case, while the original Star Trek was my introduction, SNG came along at the right time to re-ignite my interest, and I loved it as much so, but in a different way, than the original. With SNG's wrap-up, it sort of closed the book for me.

I watched them all, plus I watched STTOS in the 1960's when it first came on, after it went off, I started to read all of the many scifi novels for StarTrek. I even had the blueprints.

Out of the total of 28 TV seasons and 13 movies, I have seen everything but probably a few episodes of Voyager... and the animated series. I have never seen any of those.

I still say I really liked Beyond.

I still say I really liked Beyond.

I have the animated series on DVD, some of the actors are missing, but after StarTrek was cancelled, some went elsewhere for work. Otherwise the animated series is good.
