Bird flu outbreak confirmed at turkey farm in Lincolnshire


A bird flu outbreak has been confirmed at a turkey farm housing more than 5,000 birds in Lincolnshire.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said on Friday the H5N8 strain had been found at the farm near Louth. The virus has been circulating in mainland Europe.

All of the surviving animals will be culled and a protection zone has been placed around the facility. Officials said there was a low risk to the public and insisted there would be no impact on the Christmas turkey supply.

Outbreaks across the country have fueled more than 4,000 cases

You could be forgiven if you thought mumps was no longer a problem in the U.S. That’s because for the past few decades, thanks to widespread use of a vaccine against this contagious virus, it wasn’t.

Yet in the past several years increasing numbers of college students and others have started getting mumps again—and 2016 marks the biggest spike in a decade. Seven states (Arkansas, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York and Oklahoma) have each reported more than 100 cases this year. As of December 3 there have been more than 4,000 cases across 46 states and the District of Columbia, with about half occurring in Arkansas in a variety of schools, workplaces and colleges. By comparison, in 2010 there were 2,612 cases reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and in 2012 there were 229.

Henry Heimlich, life-saving maneuver creator, dies at 96


CINCINNATI

The surgeon who created the life-saving Heimlich maneuver for choking victims died early Saturday in Cincinnati. Dr. Henry Heimlich was 96.

His son, Phil, said he died at Christ Hospital after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week.

"My father was a great man who saved many lives," said Heimlich, an attorney and former Hamilton County commissioner. "He will be missed not only by his family but by all of humanity."

Salmonella in a food powder plant adds up to 13 recalls (so far) of popular products


When Publix recalled some of its pancake and waffle mix varieties over salmonella concerns from a powder supplier earlier this month, the Miami Herald warned it could be the first of many such recalls.

As of Sunday morning, that recall count stands at 13.

Pancake and waffle mix. Mac and cheese. Potato chips. Monkey bread mix. All among the 1.2 national food recalls per day since Dec. 7 because of possible salmonella contamination at food powder supplier Valley Milk Products.

Salmonella’s annually responsible for one million U.S. food borne illnesses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

'Nightmare' superbug may have spread outside hospitals

Six people in Colorado recently became infected with a "nightmare" superbug that until now, has mostly been limited to people in hospitals, according to a new report. The new cases suggest the superbug may have spread outside of health care facilities.

The superbug is known as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, or CRE , a family of bacteria that are difficult to treat because they are resistant to powerful antibiotics. So far, nearly all cases of CRE infections have been seen in people who stay health care facilities, or who have been treated with certain medical procedures or devices, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

It is now well established that many viruses wreak more havoc on men than on women. Examples: Men are five times as likely to develop cancer from HPV as women, twice as likely to develop Hodgkin's lymphoma from the Epstein-Barr virus, and 1.5 times as likely to die of tuberculosis, per New Scientist.

Scientists puzzling over why have suggested that women could have stronger immune systems, which would make sense from an evolutionary perspective given the importance of being able to bring offspring to term and nurse them through infancy.

Mumps hitting Arkansas' Marshallese population hard; doctors looking for a reason

The breadth of the outbreak of mumps in Northwest Arkansas appears to be linked in part to that area's community of Marshall Islanders, the director of the state Department of Health said Monday.

Meanwhile, the region's high rate of unvaccinated schoolchildren compared with the rest of the state doesn't appear to be a factor in the unusual size of the outbreak, said Nate Smith, director of the state Department of Health.

Despite making up a small fraction of the region's total population, Marshall Islanders account for about 60 percent of the 2,220 people who had been infected as of Friday in the outbreak that started in August, according to figures Smith presented to the state House and Senate's committees on public health, welfare and labor during a joint meeting on Monday.

FRIDAY, Dec. 23, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- A veterinarian appears to have been infected with a strain of avian flu known as H7N2 that spread among more than 100 cats housed at New York City animal shelters. If confirmed, this would be the first known transmission of this bird flu strain from cat to human, officials said.

New York City health officials said the vet has recovered from a mild illness, and there's no sign that the flu has spread to shelter workers or those who've adopted cats.

Doctors confirm 200-year-old diagnosis

Doctors have confirmed a diagnosis made more than 200 years ago by one of medicine's most influential surgeons.

John Hunter had diagnosed a patient in 1786 with a "tumour as hard as bone".

Royal Marsden Hospital doctors analysed patient samples and case notes, which were preserved at the museum named after him - the Hunterian in London.

As well as confirming the diagnosis, the cancer team believe Mr Hunter's centuries-old samples may give clues as to how cancer is changing over time.

Confirming initial findings from the summer of 2015, an international group of researchers a few days ago reported high effectiveness in their final analysis of data from the VSV-EBOV ring vaccination trial in Guinea, as a team from China reported results from a phase 2 trial of an adenovirus-based vaccine.

Though VSV-EBOV is furthest along in development, with steps under way to make it available for use in a future outbreak, work continues on a host of other vaccine candidates. Experts say different vaccines might be useful for different purposes, such as a quick-acting one that can help tamp down outbreaks and a long-lasting one for protecting frontline healthcare workers.
