Isolated case?

Dengue reported in Key West

The Florida Department of Health has confirmed a case of dengue fever in Key West.

"This individual has received medical treatment and is currently recuperating. The person is not a resident of Florida and has returned to their home state. They are also expected to make a full recovery."

There are no other confirmed cases at this time. The Monroe County Chapter of the Health Department and the Division of Disease Control and Health Protection are currently conducting epidemiological studies to determine the origin and extent of infection. Florida Keys Mosquito Control is assisting with the investigation and has intensified its mosquito control activities throughout Key West.

Guinea has zero active Ebola transmission - WHO

Active Ebola transmission has ended in Guinea, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday.

This comes after the last Ebola victim in the country was confirmed negative after tests done 42 days ago.

With the WHO announcement, Guinea has been placed under heightened surveillance to ensure that the current situation remains the same.

Military discloses at least 11 troops infected with Zika virus this year

At least 11 U.S. troops have been infected with the Zika virus since January, nearly all of whom traveled to countries where the mosquito-born illness is prevalent, a Pentagon health report published Friday disclosed.

In addition, four dependents of servicemembers — which can include spouses and children — and two military retirees contracted the illness, according to the report. It underscored the risks to military personnel of child-bearing age exposed to the virus during deployments.

AF continues to monitor Zika, infected mosquitoes could hit US this summer

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AFNS) -- As the threat of infected mosquitoes reaching the U.S. climbs, the Air Force continues to closely monitor the emergence of Zika virus infections to help inform and protect Airmen and their families.

The World Health Organization declared Feb. 1 that the Zika virus is a public health emergency of international concern. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all at-risk communities should prepare for possible Zika activity.

Zika virus directly infects brain cells and evades immune system detection, study shows

The mosquito-borne Zika virus linked to microcephaly and other neurological problems in newborns of affected mothers directly infects the brain progenitor cells destined to become neurons, UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers report in a study published online in Cell Reports.

The team of researchers used a strain of Zika currently impacting the Americas, and found that the virus infects about 20 percent of cells on average, evades immune system detection, and continues to replicate for weeks.

Cancer needs Ebola-level action - Biden

The hunt for a cancer cure should be treated with as much urgency as the Ebola outbreak, says US Vice-President Joe Biden.

He said he had dreamed of being the president that cured cancer and believed it was possible.

He is now leading the US "cancer moonshot" programme to cure cancer.

Plague detected in Lake Tahoe area

A flea from a yellow-pine chipmunk in the South Lake Tahoe area has tested positive for plague, California health officials report.

The flea was sampled from one of three rodents trapped in the Fallen Leaf campground area during routine testing in May. State test results confirmed plague late last week. And Texas. You see a dead or sick squirrel or other rodent, don't go near it. Don't go near dead or sick cats either.

Granted, the strain(s) circulating in the wild have lost a lot of their severity, but people can still die of it around here. A friend of mine from high school died of it about 35 years ago. By the time the hospital thought to test him for plague, it was too late to save him.

Ebola's Over in Liberia - For Now, WHO Says

The World Health Organization has declared Liberia's latest Ebola outbreak over, the fourth such announcement since the virus was first reported there.
Liberia is the last country to receive the declaration, made 42 days after tests showed the last infected person no longer had the virus. Liberia's health ministry said it now enters a 90-day heightened surveillance period.

U.S. Tuberculosis Cases Rise as Foreign-Born Patients Triple 1986 Caseload Percentage

Two-thirds of contagious tuberculosis carriers in the United States during 2015 were born overseas, up from one-fifth in 1986.

The government’s increased inflow of tuberculosis-carrying migrants appears to have reversed a 23-year decline of contagious tuberculosis cases inside the United States.
