Tesla made a big mistake by calling their adaptive cruise and control system "Autopilot" IMHO as it's certainly a misleading term in their case.The problem is that it's an appropraite name- as in it performs the very same functions as an aircraft autopilot- it assists the driver/pilot of the car/aircraft. It is not there to do all the work for them or to replace them, it is there to assist them to drive/fly the vehicle/aircraft. The fact that many people are ignorant, and choose to remain so, means they probably would have been better served to call it Driver Assistant, even though calling it Auto Pilot is technically correct. I downloaded a Tesla owners manual after previous accidents, and all through the manual where it goes through all of the Auto Pilot functions if repeatedly points out that the driver is the one in charge & responsible for the control of the car and needs to be ready to take back full control of the car at any time. So for all of the incidents being investigated, the driver obviously either didn't bother reading the manual, or thought it didn't apply to them. Grant Darwin NT |

Yes and sometimes dangerously so and all in the game of Marketing: The trickery of making menu options visible but disabled/inoperative has long been exploited to hugely profitable effect. Infamously for just one example by such as "Microsoft Office" to add a 'nag factor' from users for their company to pay for (rarely used) extra functionality... Stay safe folks! In a world of increasing automation, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping a human backup in the loop. That example also highlights the dangers of a common mode fault due to using the same singular one design team/system/spec... Looks like the hardware and design worked exactly as designed. However: The source problem was (is?) a flawed design of the operating laws that introduces a discontinuity in the rules/programming being used at the critical moment of touchdown for landing! Would you be happy about a change of pilots whereby the flying pilot has to get out of his seat to let the ground driving pilot take over?... For my designer's personal view and opinion: Relaxing the monitoring tolerances is a kludge fix that need to be looked at again for a more robust solution! ... At least that one is a one-in-a-million landings real-world (honestly unexpected systems) fail that the pilots were able to recover from. Fly safe folks! How could he miss seeing the truck in front of him?Phone? That gets my vote. As happened yesterday afternoon to one of the blokes from work. He stopped at a roundabout to let the traffic already there go through, when he got hit from behind. Numb nuts was too busy with his phone to notice the car in front had stopped. Grant Darwin NT |
