Talking of buses - I recently took my first ride on one of our new fleet pf local buses.

And I was delighted to find that it announced each bus-stop (recorded announcement, of course) in a broad Yorkshire accent.

I took a similar ride recently, but was a bit baffled by some of the "stop names", it kept saying street names not the local landmark such as pub, hotel, park, hospital etc. which is how most people describe them.

Nice free wifi & USB/Wireless power. Wonder how many will forget their stop while surfing the net or forget their phone is still charging :-)

Road-Rage-Aholics
(20 February 2018, Poland) Darwin Double! After a road collision near Stary Krzew, two men emerged from their damaged cars and began arguing. The argument grew into a physical fight...then shrank down to bloodstains on the asphalt when the men lurched into the adjacent lane of traffic. A lorry weighed in on the fight, permanently terminating the road-rage between a 29-year-old from Krakow and a 40-year-old from Zambrów,

Auto manufacturers are asleep at the wheel when it comes to security
And rising car thefts suggest the criminals are taking advantage
Cars are getting smarter every year but their increasing computational power isn’t being backed up by good IT security practices – hacking them is child’s play.

That’s the conclusion of a series of speakers at the Kaspersky Security Analyst Summit. These security researchers have demonstrated how easy it is to introduce software into vehicles to steal data, take control of vital functions, get around alarm and electronic key systems and even crash the car.

“Most cars these days are essentially computers running on four wheels,” said Stefan Tanase, principal security researcher at Romanian network testing shop Ixia.

“The only difference is when you have a problem with computer it won’t affect your physical security, but a car can put your life in danger and automotive security is something that the industry needs to take seriously.”

Woman En Route to Her Wedding Arrested for DUI.

A woman was arrested for driving under the influence -- on the way to her wedding.

Marana Police arrested the bride-to-be Monday morning outside of Tuscon, Arizona, after a three-car collision. One person was injured.
Was the groom that bad that she needed a drink or 4?

More than three tons of gold fell from the sky in Russia on Thursday.

The hatch of a plane opened as it took off from an airport in Yakutsk in eastern Siberia scattering its cargo.

The Nimbus Airlines AN-12 was carrying about nine tons of gold and other precious metals, according to local media.
I'm not so sure that getting hit in the head with a gold bar could be called "lucky" though.

Cheers.

The residents of Yakutsk are disappointed.
Initially, it was reported that gold was scattered.
Later the source of Interfax specified that the aircraft was not transporting gold, but silver. "According to my information, there were ingots of silver on board. A total of about 200 bars of the precious metal. Part of the cargo was on the runway, "- said the agency.

Self-Driving Uber Car Kills Arizona Pedestrian
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/19/technology/uber-driverless-fatality.html
http://www.bbc.com/news/business-43459156
Spooky. Yesterday I saw a documentary from BBC about Self-Driving cars.
The self-driving cars world. We are heading into a world where the cars run without drivers. But will these cars really invite us to the paradise promised? Can we enjoy pleasant, safe and environmentally friendly trips? Or does the new technology open a new traffic congestion and completely new risks? We will meet race drivers, engineers and ordinary car riders on the road to a new car world without a steering wheel.

One question was if the new technology can make moral decisions to avoid a crash.
For instance, An elderly driver meet a young mother with her child crossing the street.
What will the computer prioritize?

btw. About 1 to 1.2 millions people in the world are killed every year in the traffic.

I think that robot cars will get along just fine with other robot cars, just as human drivers mostly get along with other human drivers.

Mix the two, and the results can be messy. That will only end with the death of the last human licensed to drive - let's hope she isn't bumped off by a robot car.

BTW, is this the final end for hitch-hiking, too?

Not just an Oops, but a big Oops.
Karachi port closed after cargo ships collide, spilling containers into sea.

19 dead 21 injured as bus falls off cliff.

The Dimple Star bus with plate number TYU 708 was traversing the national highway at 9 p.m. when the driver lost control causing the vehicle to crash into the side railing of Patrick Bridge and plunging down a 15-meter-deep ravine.

Reuters - Arizona police release video of fatal collision with Uber self-driving SUV
They do stop the video short of the actual impact.

I think everyone can agree that this accident probably would have happened even if a human was driving.
However it raises questions. Who is liable in this case?
The owner or the manufacturer of the car?

Or neither.
Or the person walking across multiple lanes of traffic without due care.
