Motorcycle racer Nicky Hayden has died five days after he was hit by a car while training on his bicycle. He was 35. :-( Sad. It's dangerous to walk or cycle today! Michele Scarponi AKA l'Aquila di Filottrano. Scarponi died on 22 April 2017, after being hit by a van, while riding his bicycle, close to his home in Filottrano. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michele_Scarponi |

Should've stuck to riding horses "Pendergast was jailed for 18-months and given a four-year driving ban." A four-year driving ban? He can effing commute for the rest of his life as many of us others. Or doesn't he have feet? |

Should've stuck to riding horses He won't have money for a car or to commute after he pays for all the damage. |

BBC UK police caught almost 6,000 drivers using their devices while driving in the four weeks after 1 March. If they had the staff, they'd be able to catch that many in an hour i'm sure. Grant Darwin NT |

Having arrived at the scene of a multiple fatality accident caused by someone on their phone ploughing into the end of a traffic queue you can imagine my thoughts on use of phones while driving. Even though I have hands free in my own car and the company cars I refuse to use it while driving. For many years, I was a freelance consultant and often travelling by car to and from clients - usually within a 50 mile radius, so using local roads rather than motorways. I could see the usefulness of a mobile phone in that environment, and I was an early adopter when the GSM network was first available in the UK. That was before the law restricted the use of hand-held phones, and I did answer some incoming calls by holding the phone while driving. But when the law changed, I had a hands-free kit retrofitted: availability went up, and prices went down. All this time later, I can't see any excuse for not going hands-free: if people can afford to change their phones every year, and their car every few years, then they should also buy any necessary kit. (Many new-ish car have hands-free built in anyway) Both before and after the law change, I always made it clear to callers that I was driving, and that driving came first: there might be pauses in the conversation while I negotiated, say, a tricky road junction or traffic situation. Everybody accepted that, but a few people wouldn't even let me accept that risk, and hung up quickly, perhaps after arranging to ring again at a more convenient time. I'm comfortable in my own skin that I struck a reasonable balance while working that way, and I certainly never had an accident attributable to use of a mobile phone. Now I'm retired, I usually leave the mobile at home anyway... Interesting comment about radios. When I'm driving alone, I always have the radio on, and usually listen to a BBC current affairs/news speech channel. I can recall just one occasion when that disturbed my concentration, and I can still remember exactly which city-centre junction it distracted me at. It was the early days after railway privatisation in the UK, when there was a spate of serious rail accidents. One of the radio station's regular reporters was travelling on one of the trains which crashed, and they put her live on air (via a mobile phone, presumably) minutes after the crash, before any emergency services had reached the site. That was disturbing. I also heard the early reports of both the 9/11 and the 7/7 terrorist attacks over a car radio, but they were less distracting: the initial reports were vague and confused, and it took an hour or two for the full horror to become clear. That gives you time to brace yourself, or pull over if you prefer to. |

Then again do we ban all drivers from talking to passengers? Chris studies have shown talking to passengers does not require the mental focus as a phone call, most of the time a passenger has situational awareness, obviously the person on the other end of the phone does not. |

Then again do we ban all drivers from talking to passengers? Yes, they shut up when they see the situation in front, or they are screaming BRAKES! |

Crikey, 59yr old bus driver conveying school children pulls out in front of semi caught on camera. :-O I saw that video. 1 Can't believe that after waiting for the other cars to go past, he didn't see the truck coming (the video I saw started earlier. and the bus allowed 2 cars past before pulling out). 2 No one should have been pulling out from there- that was an exit. The bus should have continued off the freeway and then back on using the next entrance. 3 Loss of commercial passenger vehicle license? I think a loss of any license to drive pending a full driving test/assessment. But certainly no more driving of passenger vehicles. Grant Darwin NT |
