So much for the I.o.T. Practically impossible to secure so many doors.

The most ridiculous example I have seen of this thus far.

I think "Nike's firmware update bricked my self-tying $350 IoT sneakers" may have reached Peak First World Problems. I wonder what the symptoms would be... could the wearer be infected with malware to cause them to kick people? Would they walk in circles? Could other components be affected by this causing a Blue Jean of Death? :^p

a Blue Jean of Death?
ROFLMAO.
Levi will probably take umbrage at that. All those women returning their jeans because they couldn't fit into them.
If only they listened to the firmware telling them they "require" the correct size. :-)

BOSTON (AP) — In a sophisticated targeted espionage operation, hackers infected tens of thousands of computers from the Taiwanese vendor ASUS with malicious software using the company’s online automatic update service, security researchers reported Monday.

Kaspersky Lab said it detected 57,000 infections among customers of its antivirus software. It estimates that the exploit likely affected more than 1 million computers from the world’s No. 5 computer company .

The malware was designed to open a “backdoor” for intruders in the infected machines, researchers said.

Similarly so for a supplier led exploit for certain Microsoft Windows systems:

Huawei laptop 'backdoor' flaw raises concerns

A flaw in Huawei Matebook laptops, found by Microsoft researchers, could have been used to take control of machines...

... Plus there are LOTs of hype and suspicion and conspiracy in that rather sensational article...

Meanwhile, is this more plausible?:

Microsoft: Windows 10 devices open to 'full compromise' from Huawei PC driver

As part of its effort to protect Windows 10 from the next WannaCry, ... Microsoft discovered a buggy Huawei utility that could have given attackers a cheap way to undermine the security of the Windows kernel.

Microsoft has now detailed how it found a severe local privilege escalation flaw in the Huawei PCManager driver software for its MateBook line of Windows 10 laptops. Thanks to Microsoft's work, the Chinese tech giant patched the flaw in January. ... third-party kernel drivers are becoming more attractive to attackers as a side-door to attacking the kernel without having to overcome its protections using an expensive zero-day kernel exploit in Windows...

A summary of that and the consequences are eloquently detailed briefly on:

Intel makes a comeback? (Of sorts...?)

Big CPU splash from Intel:

And here's Intel's Epyc response: Up-to 56-core, 4GHz 14nm second-gen Xeon SP chips, Agilex FPGAs, persistent mem

Amazing what some competition can do: Kicking Chipzilla up the data cache...

In a highly orchestrated global maneuver, Chipzilla today launched, to much of its own fanfare, its second-generation Xeon Scalable Processors for servers – chips previously codenamed Cascade Lake.

A while ago, executives at Intel-rival AMD, which made a big splash of its own with its 32-core Epyc server-class CPUs, told us they were braced for a response from Chipzilla. And here it is...

But at what cost and what price/performance?

Here's a few benchmarks:

Intel Xeon Scalable "Cascade Lake" Processors Launch - Initial Xeon Platinum 8280 Linux Benchmarks

Intel's 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable Cascade Lake processors are officially launching ... this article is a look at what's new with Cascade Lake as well as our preliminary Ubuntu Linux performance figures for the Xeon Platinum 8280 processors...

That gives a rather interesting mixed bag.

One standout is THE COST!!! ... 2 x Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 (56 cores / 112 threads, 2.7GHz base, 4.0GHz turbo, $20018 USD)

Phew! Hot stuff!!

Yes, that is correct. They are no devices that can be attached to the computer because there are no drivers for them or any possibility of drivers for them!

(Devices are made by 3rd parties and so are their drivers - will all their security violations)

I always find it a little strange when talking about Linux and no 3rd parties given Linux is created by many including 3rd, 4th, 5th and so on parties.

Honest, open, happy families are far more positively productive than rushed (proprietary) secrecy...

Proprietary does not have to mean secretive or less productive.

After all the firmware in the screen you are looking at or the bios on your PC (even if loaded with Linux) may well be proprietary.

We tend to forget that there is a load of proprietary around us that we never consider but if it did not exist our non--proprietary would not exist.

Not defending proprietary... Just expanding the argument or idea.

It was put into politics because of its very nature. Too hot for any other board.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-tech/us-senators-introduce-social-media-bill-to-ban-dark-patterns-tricks-idUSKCN1RL25Q
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two U.S. senators introduced a bill on Tuesday to ban online social media companies like Facebook Inc and Twitter Inc from tricking consumers into giving up their personal data.

The bill takes aim at practices that online platforms use to mislead people into giving personal data to companies or otherwise trick them. The so-called “dark patterns” were developed using behavioral psychology.

“Misleading prompts to just click the ‘OK’ button can often transfer your contacts, messages, browsing activity, photos, or location information without you even realizing it,” Fischer said in a statement issued by both senators.

Russian media have reported that the case centered on accusations that Sergei Mikhailov, Dokuchayev’s boss, and Kaspesky Lab executive Ruslan Stoyanov had passed information on an agency probe of a Russian businessman to an analyst allegedly tied to the FBI.

Does that mean Kaspesky A/V is used as a tool by Russia?

Non-too-good an advert for either BT or Microsoft:

BT Tower broadcasts error message to the nation as Windows displays admin's shame

Generally a system crash is a private affair, but the BT Tower, one of London's tallest landmarks, spent much of the weekend displaying a Windows error message in a very public fashion...

... banks of LEDs at its summit that act as a very prominent billboard. Sadly for BT over the weekend it was showing what looks very like a Windows 7 error screen...

Why oh why use a Windows primary display for a city-wide view 'billboard'?!

What happens for the inevitable updates?!!

It is what we allow it to be...

In the email sent on Wednesday, the department said new rules would offer "robust data protection conditions", adding: "Government has listened carefully to privacy concerns."
Oh, the irony :-)

If a broken, generally annoying electronic billboard is the worst problem the world has this week, it will be an excellent week.

At least it wasn't hacked, as some were, to display hardcore porn movie.
