Ebola study says a dozen more were hospitalized during Dallas outbreak than was revealed

More people than the public knew were hospitalized for possible Ebola exposure during Dallas’ outbreak, a new study says.

Last fall, only two people were known to be hospitalized here after potentially contracting the often-fatal disease from a Liberian traveler. They were the nurses who tested positive.

At the time, it was not revealed that an additional dozen people, nine of them health care workers, came down with Ebola-like symptoms while being monitored for possible exposure. The report said they developed fevers, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

WHO warns that Ebola crisis isn’t over

PARIS, MAY 28 – The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday warned against complacency about the deadly Ebola virus, saying that the crisis isn’t over.

“We have to keep our guard up,” Sylvie Briand, head of epidemiology at the UN’s health agency, told a stock-taking meeting on Ebola in Paris.

Briand said the situation in Guinea, one of the three West African states where Ebola has killed more than 11,000 people, left her “deeply concerned.”

Briand warned against hopes that a line could be drawn under the epidemic. stressing that “the crisis isn’t over”.

“I am afraid there could be another wave that could spread to neighbouring countries,” she said.

ZMapp is a blend of three monoclonal antibodies — chemicals that block the Ebola virus from invading a cell. Monoclonal antibodies are engineered in a lab to mimic how our immune systems naturally respond.

A business where people have created an artificial problem and now looking for a market to sell the solution and we are telling Ghanaians beforehand that there is and will be no way by which Ghana can go through this Ebola virus human experiment without Ebola being spread country wide.”

“We also would want Ghanaians to know that, since there is no a single case of Ebola or patient in Ghana, healthy people would have to be infected with the Ebola virus before the said vaccine is administered to them for a gamble.

“It is therefore from the above illogical scenario that we consider the intended human experimentation of Ebola in Ghana as criminal, human right abuse, thievery and a total disrespect of Ghanaians as human beings.”

UN: Sierra Leone to be Ebola free in 'matter of weeks'

Sierra Leone will be free of the Ebola virus in a "matter of weeks", but stopping the deadly disease in Guinea will take more time, the United Nations' Ebola chief said.

South Korea has first two Mers deaths

Two people have died of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers) in South Korea, becoming the country's first fatalities from the disease.

The first victim was a 58-year-old woman who had contact with the original case, a South Korean who visited the Middle East.

A 71-year-old man also died.

The vast majority of cases have been in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries, but South Korea has reported 17 since last month.

More than 680 people, who may have come into contact with the infected patients, have been placed in isolation.

That's the question that Gene Olinger and his colleagues are trying to answer in a project funded by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and National Institutes of Health. Working off a list of Food and Drug Administration-approved, "off the shelf" drugs and adding in other common small molecules such as metals, herbs and food additives, the researchers came up with 2,700 promising compounds. They tested each in cell cultures and found that 171 appeared to have some antiviral activity against Ebola.
